Its fall of 1995, at an orphanage around the mountains of Pennsylvania. All the kids are playing outside, having fun. In one room in the house, we find two fifteen-year-old Caucasian teen orphans Aaron and Travis, playing a mecha fighting game on a Super Nintendo. Aaron is a physically fit tall teen with weirdly grayish-white hair that spiked up on the side and has bright blue eyes, almost like they're glowing. He is also wearing a blue shirt, black jeans, and gray shoes. Around his neck is a necklace that looks like an oversized flash drive. Travis, on the other hand, is smaller and thinner than Aaron, his hair is light brown, long, and messy. He is wearing a white t-shirt with blue shorts and white shoes.
“It looks like the heavy arms are going down,” Aaron says in a high voice.
“I don’t think so,” Travis says, “So you heard? In the newspaper, someone found a big footprint, like as tall as a car big. I think it a sign of a mecha being real.”
“Right and fairly are real too.”
As the fight goes on Aaron is about to win, when the tv turns off. Both boys go wide eye to that and notice one of the caretakers of the house holding the plug to the tv in her hand. The two of them stand up, with Aaron smiles at her. The caretaker looks to be in her early twenties with red hair, wearing a dark gray hoodie and blue jeans.
“You should be outside playing with the others,” the caretaker says. “It's a beautiful day.”
“But Rosa!” Travis says. “I was going to win.”
“No butts, now go,” She says as she points to the door.
“Sure thing Rosa!” Aaron says in a higher voice and smiles.
The two of them go outside, Aaron is looking mad as he put on his black jacket, Travis puts on a blue vest that has a dark gray hood. They walk past the kids playing around them. Travis pulls out a pocket Gameboy and starts playing. Aaron notices this and grins.
“That rad, but you shouldn’t have that out here, dude,” Aaron says, “Let’s go up to the mountain path.”
“Sure, totally,” Travis says as he put it away,
Aaron gives a smile and punches his friend's shoulder, Travis smile and punches back as they go up the mountain path. After some miles, they reach the other side of the mountain. Aaron is fine, but Travis is already tired. They sit at a near cliffside, Aaron sits on the ground and Travis sits on a log while playing on his Gameboy. Aaron looks at his necklace with a sad look in his eyes. He remembers when he was a baby, being dropped off at an orphanage by who he believes is his mom. She put the necklace around his neck, knock on the door, and leave. After Aaron remembers that and looks at Travis.
“Do you think we will ever leave here,” Aaron says as he looks up to the sky. “I mean it's nice here, but I want to see whatever is out there, you know?”
“As long as I have my games and food, I will go to wherever you want to go dude,” Travis says still playing.
“It just…I always feel like I don’t belong here. Beside you, I don’t feel like I… don't connect with anyone.”
Travis just nods looking at his game. Aaron smiles and shakes his head; he picks up and throws a pebble at Travis's face. It was not hard, but it makes him fall back and his Gameboy falls out of his hand into a hole in the ground. Both of them go wide eye to that.
“Ah, shit!” Travis shout as he crawls over to the hole, he sees it down there and light from the left. “I see it, looks like there's a pathway down on the left.”
Aaron jogs over to the edge and sees a cave below. It is easy to get down there with a rope that is on the side.
“Come on dude, let's get it!” He says it as he starts going down the rope.
“Are you sure?” Travis says as he runs over and looks down at him.
“It’s easy,” He says as he keeps going down.
Travis follows down too. He is a bit scared, but he tries going down. He loses his grip and falls on top of Aaron. After a few seconds, Travis gets up rubbing his head.
“Ow, my head.” He says.
“Ow my everything,” Aaron says with a smirk and raises his hand up.
“Let's just get my Gameboy and go back to the house,” Travis said while smiling back and getting up, he lifts Aaron back up, with Aaron's help.
After Aaron gets up, they walk into the cave. After some walking for a few steps, Travis sees it and picks it up. He turns it on, he smiles with and wide eye to see it still working. Aaron notices something in the dark and walks to it. He finds out it is a metal door.
“Hm, a door?” he says as he knocks on the door, “Did Rosa say anything about anyone living in the mountains?” Aaron tries to open it, but he can’t get it open.
“No why?” Travis says as he walks over and notices the door too, he thinks for a minute. “Hey, why not try your necklace.”
Aaron holds up his necklace and the door scans it, making the door open up and lights turn on inside, looking to be some kind of base. Aaron walks in, but Travis walks back, shaking it. Aaron turns around and notice him.
“Come on, dude. It looks cool in here.” Aaron says,
Travis hesitates but goes in. Inside there are computers, guns, metal railing, and other little things. Both of them are surprised by the whole thing, but then they notice in the middle to the far back, standing tall is a giant robot. Both of them look at each other and smile big.
“WE FOUND A MECHA!” both say at the same time as they run to it.
As they get closer to it, the details are more noticeable. It’s about 18 meters tall, looks to be slim, but still, has boxing parts and points. The body, for the most part, is very human-like, but wearing armor with a helmet that has spikes on the sides and mouth plate, shoulder, and knee pads that are a little pointed. The colors are mostly black and grey with some yellow forming a symbol on the chest and some other yellow on other parts. It also seems like it has a rocket pack on its back. They run up the stairs of the metal platform and they go around the chest area.
“Ok, maybe my necklace
can get us inside,” Aaron says. “Maybe it's like the door.”
“Hmm, may it like a key.” Travis says, “Let try it, as long as it doesn’t blow
up.”
He put his necklace up against it, Travis is shaking his fist with a big smile. Part of the chest opens up and the eyes of it light up green as well as the inside. Both of them look in and see it is a two-seater. Travis sits in the back and Aaron sits in the front seat, he has two joysticks on the armrests with some buttons, one analog pad on both sticks, and triggers.
“Sweet, let's see what this baby can do,” Aaron says rubbing his hands together and takes control.
The door closes up and in front of the three screens light up showing the inside of the base from the robot’s eyes and one in front of Travis with words on it.
“Hello, users, and welcome aboard the 0002-Shadier, here are the instructions,” it says as it shows how to use it as Travis read it, as well as what weapons it has.
“Let’s see what we got,” Travis says as he looks closer to it. “It looks like we get a long sword, energy shield, and other things.”
Travis explains more and Aaron nods as he plays around with the controls. He finds out the joysticks control both arms, the five triggers open and close the fingers, the pad on the right moves the head, and the left moves the legs to walk or run, it almost makes them fall out of their sits. He moves it back to where it was.
“Ok, let's get this out for a test run!” Aaron says with an excited smile.
“What? Are you sure?” Travis says, looking concerned. “I mean, I don’t want to go to jail, dude.”
“Come on, what are the cops going to do?” He says as he flips some switches.
A metal gateway opens up above them, Shadier launches up through it, making the both of them fall back down their chairs from the g-force. They go all the way up to the sky, then stop and just hover there. Aaron smiles as he takes control to fly around quickly. Travis is holding on tight, looks very scared.
“Wwwoahhhhh! This is awesome!” Aaron says with a big smile on his face, driving around Shadier.
“YAY I GUESS!” Travis quickly says looking nervous, he notices something. “Hey look.”
Travis points to the near town that is smoking. Travis looks at instructions then presses a button to zoom the eyes of the mecha. It shows about three other mechas, looking a bit bulkier than Shadier, holding guns and with one eye there two. They’re shooting their guns, destroying a lot of the buildings. Travis is in shock and scared. Aaron does the same, but then his face turns serious. He takes control and flies Shadier over to them.
“What are you doing?” Travis says.
“We have to take them down,” Aaron says
“Are you kidding me?”
“We need to do something!”
“We’re going to die.”
As they fly over to them, the enemy mechas see them and open fire on them. Aaron blocks it with the energy shield on his left arm. He lends sliding the feet on the ground very quickly, he ends up tripping and roll to the side. They crash into one of them, falling to the ground. Aaron sits Shadier back up; it looks like the one they crash into is not moving.
“That could have gone better, ow,” Travis says as he rubs his head.
“At least we got one. Do we have any firearms?” Aaron says getting up there mecha.
Travis looks over the instructions again. “Look like we have a firearm in the arms, a button near the pads.”
“Oh cool,” Aaron says standing up, he looks over and sees the one mecha run to them. “Oh shit!”
He points the right arm to him. Pushing a button on the joystick, making part of Shadier forearm open up and fire a laser from it. Aaron shoots it mostly at the head, it keeps coming to, he grabs their arm and throws them down. The enemy mecha stands over them and tries to open the cockpit chest of Shadier, Aaron crosses the arm to keep him off.
“We get anything for this?!” Aaron says
The enemy mechas start to open the arm up, Aaron is trying his best to keep them closed. Travis pushes a button that makes the screen turn off, he turns it back on. He looks through instructions and find something that makes him smile. He quickly flips some switches and puts his hand on a lever.
“Let him open the arm up!” Travis says,
“Why?!”
“Just do it!”
Aaron opens the arms, and Travis quickly pushes a lever. I make the chest glow and fire an energy blast from it. It blows the enemy mecha head off. Aaron quickly gets Shadier up and pushes a button; it makes Shadier move on its own arm to pull a long sword out of its back. Aaron drives it into him, stabs the sword into it, and cuts upward, cutting it in half. Aaron looks over to see the last one is flying away. Aaron puts the sword away, flies over to him.
“Oh, you’re leaving? NOT!” Aaron says.
He tackles it back to the ground. He pulls off the rocket pack on it. The enemy mecha try to break free, but Shadier takes control of its arms. He ends up breaking the upper forearms. As that happens, the chest of the enemy mecha opens up, the pilot who is wearing a helmet to cover his face, jumps out and runs away. Travis notice and point to him, Aaron throws the mecha away from the city, then try to take him with the mecha arm. The pilot gets taking by the cop nearby, the cop takes off his helmet.
Reveling the pilot looks human, but with grayish-white hair and blue eyes like Aaron. Aaron is wide eye to that and pulls back the mecha arm. The cops and the people stare shock and awe at Shadier as Aaron stands him up. Aaron makes Shadier give the thumb up to them, then fly off. After lending Shadier back in the base, they get out of the mecha. Aaron walks out looking confused and has his head down, Travis jumps out excitedly.
“Boo-ya! That was so awesome!” Travis says he looks at Aaron. “Oh, my bad…”
“No no, it's fine. It was so cool.” Aaron says with a smile.
“Now what, should we tell someone about this?”
“No, we still don’t know what this is all about. That pilot looks like me and my neckless unlock Shadier, what did Mom do? For now, we keep this a secret and fight whoever attacks us. Right co-pilot?”
Travis smiled and nods as the two of them fist bump. They get back to the house, Rose sees them and runs to them. Hugs the both of them.
“Thank god, you’re alright,” Rosa says and lets go of them, looking mad. “Where did you two go?”
“Well ummmmm.” Aaron says,
“We, we were in the mountain path.” Travis says, “We hear the mecha were attacking and we find cover.”
“Is this truth Aaron?” She says well giving Travis a death glare.
“Yes!”
“Ok, I’m glad you two are safe.” She smiles and takes them back inside.
A few days later Aaron and Travis are sitting in the classroom near the orphanage. Aaron is taking notes, with Travis secretly playing a game under his desk. When Rosa runs it with a scared look on her face.
“Giant robots are back; everyone gets to the basement!” She says.
Aaron and Travis nod to each other. Everyone makes their way to the basement, but Aaron and Travis sneak away. They get outside, running to the mountain with serious determined looks on their faces.
