Warning: Topics such as suicide are present in this episode.
I gasped, there was a boy who was sitting on the thin part of the ground that came after the fence. Mind you, this was this rooftop that I was standing on.
That was when I knew I could be a witness to a potential suicide.
It was the end of school, and I wanted to look at the sun setting from a high point of view. I had no idea this would happen though.
My gasp gave me away, and the person turned to look at me. However, contrary to my expression, the boy turned around with an extremely relaxed one. He showed no signs of being scared - just expressions that a tired and bored child would have on their face.
"...Who are you?" His voice was slightly deep, lacking any happiness from what I could have told.
I didn't answer at first due to the surprise of the scenario I was in, but I soon did.
"S-Seria." He only nodded but didn't give me his name.
My heart was pounding loudly in my chest, was he really trying to cause harm to himself, or was he just a bored teenager? I really hoped for the ladder. "Um, can you tell me what you're doing over there? You're not...trying to harm yourself, right?" I tried to ask a question that will give me answers, but hopefully not anger the person in front of me.
"...Maybe," The boy turned back around, facing the sunset. "Or perhaps I'm just bored." He sounded like he really didn't care either way.
Jeez, why did you answer like that? It's only making me more anxious!
I bite my lip, frowning while clutching onto my backpack's handles. What should I do?! Should I call a teacher over? He might actually decide to jump down if I do that though.
What can I do in this situation??
While I was busy panicking, the boy turned around once again to face me. He frowned. "What's with that expression on your face?"
I could only stare at him with confused eyes. Does this guy even understand what this situation looks like to me?!
"I'm just worried."
"Why?" He replied.
Sucking in a deep breath, I signed and stepped closer to him. "Don't you realize that sitting on the edge of the ground looks like a..." I didn't say the word.
The boy just looked at me funny. "A suicide?" I looked at him and nodded, my lips in a firm line.
He just sighed and shrugged his shoulders. "Why does a person like me being in potential danger matter to a stranger? If I saw you sitting where I am now, I would just shrug it off. It's not like I can interfere with your life."
...This guy...he said a bold statement so casually too!
"I- it's just, I don't know...human nature?" My answer was more like a question than a conviction though.
Again, another weird look from him. "So you're the type that worries about everyone, huh?"
"I-I guess?" Seriously, what's wrong with him? If anyone saw someone in a potential suicide attempt, they would want to stop that person as well! It's natural, after all.
The boy stares at me and crosses his right leg over his left, positioning himself in an even more dangerous situation than he was before. One wrong move and he could actually fall off!
"You could seriously fall to the ground if you do that-" I started, but he just ignored me. Are my worries really for nothing? Did I just embarrass myself by thinking this was a suicide when it wasn't?
After all, he just seemed like a bored kid again. Maybe I shouldn't have interfered.
"Um, I think I should get going now...sorry if I misinterpreted something what was going to happen," I say, then turning around to go to the door that leads to the stairway.
It's silence for a moment and I can only hear my footsteps until he speaks up.
"Wait."
I turn around, obviously confused at what he wanted.
The boy gets up from his comfortable position and jumps over the safety fence. He looks me in the eye, and with the lighting and all, his eye color is really pretty. Wait, he's not at the edge of the ground anymore-
"Thanks." He says. My eyes widen a bit and I cock my head to the side.
"What? Why are you thanking me?" I ask.
"...Well, I actually was thinking about causing harm to myself before you came in. I was surprised - I didn't know someone would care." The boy says, leaning back slightly and putting his hands on the fence railing.
His answer shocked me, so I was right after all.
"What do you mean? If there was any other person than me who saw this, I'm sure they would have reacted in the same way."
He smiles sadly at me, before walking towards me. He then stops in front of me and pats my head.
"Thanks for interrupting me. By the way, my name is Liam. See you around school, Seria." The boy said to me before walking down the stairs. I only stared at him before realizing what had happened.
I...had saved someone's life?
A sudden warm feeling engulfed me, and I smiled.
I'm glad that I was born as a worried person.
