Write it down they said, but I didn't know what that meant. Then the teacher handed me a tiny black cylinder.
"Write it down."
I fiddled with the device until it clicked on one end and a point came out the other.
"It's a sword," I said.
"Write," Teacher demanded.
I looked down at the blank white square in front of me, it wasn't a black screen like everything else we looked at, that occasionally showed us the news about our country and the war and sometimes showed that old cartoon with the racer that had an X on his face, but some kind of flimsy thin material.
"Start with your name."
My name? I thought. How am I going to type in a series of digits with a sword on a thin white square?
Impatient Teacher grabbed my hand that held the little black cylinder softly, but firmly and pressed it into the thin quadrilateral. A black liquid poured onto the shape and formed into a circle.
Painting! I thought. I know painting. I just need to add digits.
I spelled my name... 1... 4... 1...13...
"Translate!" Teacher urged.
"Translate?"
"To archaic," Teacher urged. Outside I heard sirens and blaring screens yelling INCOMING... INCOMING...
"Translate!" Teacher screamed. "Hurry, before the meteor hits!"
I translated.
A... D... A... M...
