Chapter 1 Ruin and Desolation
May 21, 2024
Veena Morton was dead.
On the day she was buried, it poured with rain.
Her soul floated in the air, raindrops passing through her body, splattering randomly on the umbrellas of the guests attending her funeral.
“What a pity, dying so young. I wonder what happened. The Morton family has had one tragedy after another these past few years, and now even Veena Morton is gone.”
“Yeah, the Morton brothers were so promising, but now they’re all gone, one by one.”
“It's such a shame. There’s no one left in the Morton family now.”
Hearing the murmurs of the guests, Veena Morton's heart ached intensely.
Yes, her Morton family was now completely ruined.
And it was all because of her stupidity!
If she hadn’t invited wolves into their home, if she hadn’t been deceived, how could her family have ended up like this? How could her three brothers have met such tragic fates?
Veena Morton’s heart hurt, a pain so intense it felt like spasms.
But why does it still hurt, even though I’m just a soul?
At that moment, a couple approached, looking sorrowful, each placing a bouquet of flowers in front of Veena Morton’s gravestone. “Veena, rest in peace.”
“Veena, I’ll never forget you. You’ll always live in my heart.”
Seeing Sheila Henry and Adam Dalton, Veena Morton rushed towards them in hatred. How could they be so hypocritical!
She wanted to tear apart their deceitful faces. It was because of them that her family was destroyed.
But she was just a spirit, unable to harm them.
How laughable.
One was Sheila Henry, whom she had brought into the Morton family and treated like a sister.
The other was Adam Dalton, the man she had finally decided to marry.
And yet.
They had been carrying on an affair behind her back.
They used her to gradually take over the Morton family, framing her eldest brother and sending him to prison where he was murdered, crippling her second brother’s hands so he could no longer be a doctor and leading him to commit suicide in despair, and orchestrating a smear campaign against her third brother, who was beaten to death by ignorant haters after being vilified online.
All this was Sheila Henry and Adam Dalton’s doing.
And she had been completely oblivious to their scheme, foolishly trusting them.
It wasn’t until they had transferred all her assets away and on her wedding day to Adam Dalton, Sheila Henry intentionally let her catch them in the act and revealed the cruel truth, that she realized the tragedies were all part of their plot.
Veena Morton still remembered the searing pain in her heart when she learned the truth. She screamed in madness and desperation, but it was useless.
Her brothers were gone.
The Morton family was beyond saving.
She still remembered Sheila Henry’s mocking words: “Veena Morton, you’re so stupid. Your family’s downfall is largely thanks to you.”
She trembled as she asked, “Sheila Henry, what do you mean!”
“I mean, Adam and I couldn’t have taken over Morton Group without your blind trust and your constant begging your brother to invest in Adam’s company.”
Sheila Henry crossed her arms, her face showing an emotion Veena had never seen before—jealousy and madness. “Veena Morton, you’re useless to us now, so I’ll tell you the truth. Did you know your eldest brother was set up and sent to prison? And that he was killed there? Your second brother, the brilliant doctor, killed himself. I heard he was a bloody mess when he died. And your third brother, I wanted him to help me in the entertainment industry, but he refused. So I spread some rumors to ruin him, and he died a miserable death, suffocated and in pain. He almost ruined our plans, but you trusted us so much that you even warned us about him. We had no choice but to get rid of him.”
“Veena Morton, how does it feel to have all your family dead? You had a perfect family and a happy life, and now it’s all gone. Are you happy?”
Veena Morton couldn’t believe these things were done by Sheila Henry and Adam Dalton. She went mad and fought with Sheila Henry, but she was no match for Sheila Henry and Adam Dalton.
In the end, they pushed her off the eighth floor balcony, killing her instantly.
They disguised her death as a drunken accident, fooling everyone.
After her death, her soul was trapped in the cemetery, unable to reincarnate due to her deep resentment.
She replayed her life over and over, feeling nothing but ridicule, regret, and overwhelming guilt.
Her brothers had died because of her foolishness.
She had failed them.
But she had no chance to take revenge.
Nor could she apologize to them.
As the rain stopped and the sun rose, the guests gradually left.
The cemetery returned to its usual silence.
Until a man arrived at Veena Morton’s grave.
His eyes were bloodshot as he stood before her gravestone.
The next moment, the man began to dig up her grave with his bare hands, his long fingers bleeding from the stones and dirt, but he didn’t stop until he unearthed her urn. He cradled the urn in his arms.
Bryce O’Connor tightly hugged Veena Morton’s urn, tears streaming from his crimson eyes. He couldn’t believe that the beautiful girl in his heart was now reduced to this small box. He felt cold all over, his body in pain, as if being torn apart. His eyes were filled with panic and despair, so much that even breathing was painful.
“Veena, I’m sorry I’m late.”
The hoarse voice came from the man’s throat, filled with suppressed pain.
“Veena, Veena…”
Bryce O’Connor knelt on the ground, clutching Veena Morton’s urn, his body curled in agony, constantly calling her name until blood seeped from his mouth, staining his chest red. Yet the pain in his eyes didn’t lessen.
His heart felt like it was covered in cold ice and snow, each beat causing excruciating pain, as if he were falling into a dark abyss with no salvation.
When Veena Morton saw Bryce O’Connor there, she was surprised. Seeing his pain and the blood he coughed up, she was even more shocked.
Why was Bryce O’Connor so pained by her death?
Didn’t he not love her?
Didn’t he say their arranged marriage was just an old agreement and that he had no feelings for her?
In her previous life, Verna Morton had her family destroyed by the person she trusted the most, and misunderstood Bryce O'Connor, who loved her dearly, because of her provocations. It was not until after her tragic death that she realised that it was not that Bryce O'Connor did not love her, but that he loved her so much that he was willing to die for her. Once reborn, Verna Morton finally recognised her own heart and began the road of pampering and teasing her husband, tilting her head in her ascetic husband's arms and begging for kisses. - One day, Bryce O'Connor, who couldn't stand being teased by the little girl, put Verna Morton against the wall, "Verna, don't tease me again!" Vina Morton didn't care at all, and wrapped her arms and legs around Bryce O'Connor, "Husband husband husband, have to tease husband." Bryce O'Connor had no choice but to look at the arrogant and cute little girl, and had no choice but to take her into his arms and kiss her hard. Every night after that, the paranoid cold-hearted man circled her in his arms and coaxed her lowly, word by word: "Baby, call your husband again, okay?"
