Tales from somewhere

A hotel of a different kind

A hotel of a different kind

Sep 25, 2021

It was a plain grey skyscraper near the city center, next to a Star Bucks and a small Asian takeout shop. It looks like any other skyscraper in the city, grey exterior, a lot of windows and not much else. Nobody walking the streets payed attention to it, it was just an ordinary skyscaper. But apperently some strange things are happening inside the building.

They arrived at 2 pm, it was quite a hot day and people kept strolling in and out of the Star Bucks with different variations of cold coffe. The observation team was not so lucky, they were standing ontop of a skyscraper roof, their equipment directed on the skyscraper in front of them. They called us after they witnessed another incident. three tenager with a quite impressive track record had entered the building a 1:30pm and came out at 1:50 with a quite noticable change in their behaviour.

Apperantly the had thrown some color bombs at some cars and fled laughing inside the skyscraper. After they came back out at they went two of them went to the cars and another disappered into the crowd, after a while he came back with cleaning equipment and the three started cleaning the cars under the watchfull eyes of the Asian food shop owner and our sweeting observation team.

This odd incidents might have never be noticed, if not one of the most dangerous murderes entered the building persuit by the police, as they feared a hostage situation they waited outside for three long hours. At 7pm he left the building, as soon as he was outside he walked calmly to one of the officers and let himself be taken in. Nobody knew what has happend inside the building,he was as cooperative as he if he had nothing to hide and told everything about his actions, but never could he answer a question regarding that skyscraper as much as he tried to. After that we placed this area under observation, and today someone from the upper levels decided to act.

A men arrived in a red Tesla and stopped in a parking lot for Star Bucks employees, which was on the opposite street of the skyscarper, he stopped and left the vehicle only to be greeted by the hot air.

He marched through the croweded streets, heading towards the skyscaper, past the people who were trying to flee from the heat.

He suddenly had a voice talking in my ear:

"Ah, Thomas do you have the honor of beeing the first to the building. Well I hope you don't do all the fun stuff without us."

"Fun stuff" he grunted," we could change roles Cathy, you just need to say a word."

A chuckel ringed in his ears.

He was now infront of the skyscraper as he noticed something.

"Cath, why has nobody talked about this two people near the door?"

"Who do you mean? There is nobody our team could see, the answer came back."

A top of the stairs was a mirrored glas door which was flanked by two identical looking men. Each of them wore a red coat with 4 golden buttons, an equaly read trousers, 2 Pair of dark red shows, white gloves and ontop of their head a naval looking cap in red with golden outlines.

He casualy tapped against the side of his sunglasses and took a photo which was then shard with the whole operations team.

"Interesting" a voice said," you may procced but be wary, we don't know what or who they are !"

He moved up the stairs, before he was able to say a thing he was pushed away by a middle aged woman.

"What are you doing here are you blind? she yelled at him. Move your ass!"

1,65, female, summerdress, higheels, black hair, expensiv looking bag, ne noticed will staggering to the side.

She moved past him, "what are you looking so stupid are you retarded or what?" Before he could even answer she hurried to the front door, not taking any visable notice of the two men beside it, as she was near the door they both simultanisly reached for their respective door handle and pulled it open as the woman moved past them they bowed lightly and closed the door in sync. He noticed that both smild through the whole ordeal, not forced and not creepy, just a genuine simle.

He grabed a hold of himself and climbed the last step and stood infront of the glas door. There was nothing else except the two men besides it. He procceded to move forward but the two men moved simultaniusly infront of their respectiv door side. Holding out a hand, not aggresiv but firm and gesturing him to stay where he was. He again noticed that they were still smiling at him. Both of them reached into their breast pocket and pulled out a golden pocket watch, the looked at it for a moment.

"What has happend, why have you stopped moving? A voice spoke in his ear, have you seen the woman?"

"Yeah", a female voice answered, "that was quite funny you stood there quite dumfunded she laughed."

"The men here don't let me enter, should I try to force myself in?" he asked in a low voice, while moving his hand slowly near his belt.

Before someone could answer the two man simultaniusly placed their procket watches back into their pocket and opened the door with one quick motion. Both of them had one hand on the door handle while the other showed into the door way. He looked at them, unsure at first but after a split second, he steped inside.

He was in a well lit lobby, it was empty execpt a small table in the middle of the room. In the back he could see a corridor leading further inside the building.

"I'm in ", he wispered, " I will activate the lifestream now."

"Understood " a voice replied," please try to hold radio silence everyone. Good luck agent." He walked slowly to the table, it took him so time, longer then he thought it should take to cross half of the lobby. As he closed in on the table, he could make out a person behind it. The nearer he came the more features he could make out. It was a blonde haired women, she wore a dark red jacket with a golden buttons. After walking some time which felt like eternity he arrived at the table. The woman seemed busy reading some papers so he stood there silently. After a while she seemd to take notice that he was here and looked up.

"Ah, Mr. Michealson right on time, it's nice to meet you."

He looked at her, "how do you know my real name?" In his ear he heard a sharp hiss.

The women examined him for a brief moment then continued without taking notice of his comment." Well you shouldn't be here, but on the other hand you should", she said. "Well" , she handed him an old book and a golden pen, "please sign yourself in", he looked at the book there were dozens of names in it, but non that he knew, all written in red. He glanced at the pen. The women who seems to notice his hesitation, and smiled. She reached under the table and took out a small golden disk. "You use them all the time right?" She placed here index finger on top of it and said: "You will not be harmed in any way by signing your name in this book."

"How can she have that? "he heard a voice say. "Quite!", said another. He was irritated as well, he took his sunglases of, the sign for the command team that he expected a response. After a while he heard a voice say: "You may sign". He took the pen from the woman and signed his name in the book, the color of his name was green. "Thank you", she said and handed him a old looking golden hourglass filled with red sand. The moment he took, the sand started to flow down. "Please hold onto that, she said. You can now pass, please take the right door, you are expected." Then she looked down on here papers and didn't further took notice of him.

He walked around the table, his steps making no sound and headed for the also grey corridor.

It was silent in the building, not a sound was heared as he traversed the insides of the building. Everything was grey, the walls, the floor and even the celing. The light come from somewhere he couldn't see, maybe some passiv light installation he thought.

He lookd at the hourglass, at quater of sand had already disappeard. Silently he moved through this building, his head as empty and greay as his surrowndings. He didn't know how much time passed until he apruptly reached the end of the corridor, a grey wall. He shook his head to drive away the lethargic feeling he had and looked around. He noticed 4 doors, 3 left one right. Each door was made from grey wood, one could see each vein and crack perfectly.

"I'm expected huh", he said

The right door she said he thought, well right it is he thought and opend the door and stepped in.

Inside was another grey room with a door at the end, next to it stood another red clad men like the ones outside.

He looked around, but nothing else was there. He approached the man and suddenly heard a ticking noise, he spun around and noticed an hourglass at the before empt wall.

He calmed himself and inspected it, it looked similar to his, golden exterior and red sand, but the hourglas itself moved like a regular clock from left to right, each time making a deep ticking sound.

He turned around and saw the man holding the door open, behind it was nothing to see only blackness. He braced himself, nodded to the doorman and stepped inside. He walked through and to his surprise found himself in a small room.

An empty bookshelf stood to his left, on his right a small pot with red and blue colored flowers. At the back of the room was a mirror and before were two chairs. In one sat a main clad in a dark red suit, white gloves and a dark red hat.

He looked up from a magazin directly in Thomas eyes, he's eyes where pitch grey. He stood up, lifted the hat from his head and bowed down. "Welcome Mr. Thomas, or should I say Mr. Michealson?" Thomas stopped irritated, but then got a hold of himself. "Hello, Mr ?"
"Ah that doesn't matter, but for your convenience call me Mr. Red, that should be easy to remember. And you might want to take your sunglasses of, it's a bit dark in here. He agreed and put down his sunglasses". "Take a seat" Red invited him.

"So what brings you here?"
"I'm from the A.U.I, the Agency for unnatural incidents. We are interested in figuring out what your objectiv is and who you are."

"That's rather straight forward, but don't you already now what we do?"
"Well, as far as we know people who came here returned as a better person."

"Better you say", said Red," thats all?"

"Thats what we like to know" he said.

"Why would you say they are better?"

"Well, the three tenagers who entered, came back and ap... "

"Nah, why do you people always use examples?"

"Maybe I should have formulated my question better. How do you define better? "

"Well they are now doing stuff like helping others out and so, they are good people now."

"What do you mean by good?" Red asked.

"Somebody who is helping othe..
"
"Stop, stop, stop " Red called out. "No examples, a definition", he rubbed his forhead, "well, let's try it differently."

"I will just ask you some questions and you tell me if it's "good" or "bad", ok?"

"Ok", he said nervously.

"Is it good or bad to kill someone?"

"It's bad."

"Is it good or bad to save someone from killing himself?"

"Good of course"

"Is stealing good or bad?"

"Bad"

"If a person is trying to shoot your family and you only have one second to either shoot or not shoot, would shooting him be justified?"

"Yes if someone doesn't want to be helped because he has a dangerous disease that will kill him would stopping him from killing himself be fair or unfair?"

... "unfair I guess"

"Finally, if you are really poor and living with your family on the street would it be ok to steel some food to provide for them?"

"No I guess"

"Well have you realized it ?"

It was rather a quick run, but you seemed to be running out of time. He looked at his hourglas only a little less then a quater was left.

Red said back in his chair, piercing him with his eyes.

Thomas thought about it after a while he said: "they are all the same questions but with more or less context. But my answer for each was different."

Red nodded, "what could one conclude from that?"

"That there is no right or wrong decision without context."

"Well yes and no, but now try to connect it with our discussion about what is good and bad."

Kane thought: "well if I replace all positive words with good and all negative ones with bad then..."

He sat there for a moment considering his solution.

Red looked at him agrin stealing itself on his lips," do you know what happends with people who entered the building who where not "bad"?"

He finaly realized what was happening: "you don't only change bad people to good people right ?"

"You also..."
At this moment aloud tick sounded through the room, it sounded deep, sad and final.

He looked at his hourglass realizing the sand had run out.

He looked at Red. A slow realization crept up his spine.

Red smiled sadly,"well yes you seem to have realized it unfortunatly you were a bit to late."

He nodded stood up,tapped at his sleve and left Red in his room. He passed by the man inhe front room who nooded to him.

He passed by the reception areawhere the woman smiled to him, here eyes looked sad. He didn't bother anymore.

Only people who were doing good stuff in their live wereable to join the A.U.I, he had helped other his whole life. He left the building went past the doormen and headed for Star Bucks.

"Mr Thomas, do youhear me?" a voice in his ear screamed.

He didn't bother, he pulled the plug from his ear and tossed it on the sidewalk.

He entered the shop,it was nicely cool in there, there were 15 people in this room.

A young women writing that she head arrived at their dateing location,

a buisnessman looking for nervously on his clock.

A somewhat stressed Star Bucks employee who tried to get the name of his customer right.

Thomas stopped behind the door, reaching for his holster...
