“Are you going to that coffee shop later?” Koushi turned to Daichi, who was still pulling his shoes on, before leaving the club room.
“Yeah,” Daichi spoke, not looking up from his task.
“Can you get me-”
“-An iced americano with almond milk and three pumps of sweetener?” Daichi raised an eyebrow.
“And-”
“A blueberry muffin and a chocolate croissant?” He bit his lip to hide his smile, and finished tying his shoe.
“What the fuck??” When he finally looked back at Koushi his eyes were wide.
Daichi just laughed. “Yeah, I know. We’re meeting at mine right?”
“Hang on you can’t just-”
Daichi walked out the door. Leaving Koushi just standing there, laughing. Daichi never usually does stuff like that in front of the team. He’s usually in captain mode, until he gets home.
“You guys might as well get married already honestly, Suga, you’re practically engaged now.” He heard from the corner of the club room, near Tanaka’s pin up.
“You’re real funny, Nishinoya. You forget, Daichi and I have been friends for years. Of course he knows my coffee order.” Koushi said. At least on the outside. On the inside, he was thinking about something he’s never thought of before.
Dating was never really on Koushi’s radar. He was alway so focused on volleyball, and trying to keep up with school at the same time as his rigorous training schedule. And these past two years, he’s had to think about college too, if he really does want to become a teacher.
Yeah, he had his sexuality crisis in middle school, but that was more about a celebrity crush here and there. He’d never really liked anyone before. He never needed too. Sure he thought people were hot. He was a gay man on a volleyball team. He was constantly surrounded by the best thighs in the prefecture; he'd have to be blind not to notice. But feelings? That’s something new to think about.
Koushi cared about his team. He knew that for sure. He would be devastated if anything happened to them. But that’s more a familial love than anything. The first and second years are like his kids, that he has to keep in line. Hinata is the oldest of the first years, someone has to keep them together. And the second years speak for themselves. He doesn’t know what he’d do if it wasn’t for Ennoshita.
However, now that Nishinoya had said something, it was probably pretty odd that he hasn’t had a crush. Ever. That he’s never been interested in anyone before. It’s not exactly normal for a teenage boy. Especially one this close to graduating high school. Usually he would have had some sort of love interest by now.
Koushi brushed the thought away, when he heard one too many ‘Boke’s’ from Kageyama. Keeping a bunch of fifteen year olds from murdering eachother is a little more important than his lack of love life. So off he went to keep the overzealous first years from causing too many problems.

It was a few hours, and one hot shower later and Koushi was on his way to Daichi’s house. Daichi moved out of his parents place a while ago, so that there would be more room for his sisters. It wasn’t a huge deal, his parents paid most of his expenses and will until he graduates and can get a job. And being the oldest child, he took care of himself pretty well. Plus he was eighteen already, and it was only a few months now until he would be leaving for college anyway.
He lived in a small flat not far from the school. A quaint one bedroom, one bathroom with a small living room and a pretty okay sized kitchen for its price. The building even had its own laundromat. Koushi’s name was left with security since he was around so often, so he was able to just walk right in, and up to the third floor. He knocked once, and then opened the door himself. Daichi rarely locks the door when he’s home.
He was immediately met with the sight of Daichi sitting on his living room floor, his school paper spread over the table, one coffee in hand and another on the table along with a takeout bag from their favorite cafe.
“Hey Suga,” Daichi said, looking up from whatever he was reading with a warm smile. “I started without you, I hope it’s okay, but this english assignment has been kicking my ass.”
Koushi laughed, “Nah, I totally get it. It’s not even like it’s hard, it’s just annoying.”
“Exactly.”
Koushi took his seat next to Daichi and grabbed his drink, humming at the taste before pulling out his own assignments. It barely took him a moment to organize Daichi’s papers, which had been just haphazardly left around. Koushi always found it ridiculous how he was able to remember where he put everything, and organized Daichi’s papers every time they studied together. He was just turning to ask Daichi where he was in the reading when he caught Daichi staring right at him. An unfamiliar look in his eyes.
Koushi thought back to what Nishinoya said before, but only for a moment, until he remembered what he was actually going to ask about.
Daichi answered and they went about their studying without thinking about it again.
By the time they had both finished, it was already late and they were both hungry, so Koushi texted his parents and let him know he was gonna stay the night at Daichi’s. It was a common occurrence anyway, to the point where Koushi had his own drawer there with an extra school uniform, extra volleyball stuff, and even extra leisure clothes.
He was sitting on the couch messing around with the music while Daichi cooked dinner. He was an amazing cook, and Koushi was determined to get him to realize it. He always sells himself short. Koushi would pay money for Daichi’s food, but Daichi is always saying how he only knows how to cook a few things, and it happens when you're an older sibling.
In Koushi’s book, that was a load of bullshit.
He looks over to see Daichi at the counter with a knife and cutting board, and felt a pang in his chest.
Once again he thought back to Nishinoya’s comment.
“You guys might as well get married already honestly, Suga, you’re practically engaged now.”
He thought back to earlier, when Daichi was looking at him. The small things Daichi did when they were alone, and not at school, focused on classes, or with the team, focused on wrangling a bunch of teenagers.
He thought about how he felt when he would wake up in Daichi’s arms, when he stayed the night. They’d been friends for years, what’s wrong with a little bit of cuddling? But then he thought about being in the same situation with some of his other friends. Would he really want that.
All the while Nishinoya's words were on repeat in his head.
Then. In that moment it finally dawned on him. It’s not that he’d never had feelings for anyone before. It’s that he’d never noticed them before.
It’s because these weren’t the kind of feelings that slap you in the face with attraction and butterflies. They were the kind of feelings that come slowly. That sneak up on you. That you don’t notice until after the fact.
He never noticed how he felt about Daichi before this, because nothing ever changed. Because this is how he always felt about Daichi, and it’s how he always will feel about Daichi.
The only thing now is that he’s aware of it. He’s aware of how attracted he is to Daichi’s broad shoulders and strong arms. He’s aware of how he feels perfectly at peace in Daichis home, and how it is kind of his home too.
How Daichi is always on his mind, whether he realizes it or not. How he felt when Daichi already knew he was going to ask for coffee and pastries. Not just surprised, but warm. Comfy, in a way.
Koushi was in love with Sawamura Daichi. And he has been for years.
“-uga? Suga? Are you good?” Daichi’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“What?”
Daichi smiled that brilliant smile, and Koushi’s heart fluttered. Oh what was he going to do about this. “You were a little out of it for a minute there.”
“Oh, yeah sorry, i just got a little lost in thought?” Koushi looked away, feeling his face heat up.
“What could possibly be going on in your pretty little head, that could pull you that far away from reality?” Daichi raised an eyebrow.
Koushi stopped for a minute and turned back to Daichi in surprise. “Are you flirting with me?” He immediately regretted saying that out loud. If he wasn’t red before, he was now.
Daichi laughed, “I mean, I have been for months, but thanks for noticing.”
