It was Monday morning in Austin, TX when Carol went to go get her lunch from Subway. She saw a crowd of people gather around her work building. They were all showing panic and fear in their eyes over the matter. Carol was confused on what was going on and went up to the police officer.
“Excuse me, officer, what is going on here with all these people?” she asked him
“Well there is a person on the roof about to commit suicide.” He said.
Carol was shocked by this and looked at the roof to notice that someone was up there on the edge.
“Do you know who this person is? Like a name or description.” She asked filled with worry.
“Her name is Lana, she’s 26 years old.” He said looking at his papers then back to her, “Why do you know her?”
“Yes she’s my friend and co-worker… Oh gosh I didn’t know she was suicidal.” She said bursting into tears.
The cop held her and gave her tissues to clean up her face. She said thank you and threw the tissues away.
“Is there any way that I can go into the building and talk to her?” she asked.
The cop said yes and allowed her to go into the building. She took the elevator knowing how long it would take for her to get to the roof. The building had about 20 floors so the stairs would only stall her. She finally reached the roof and saw her friend.
“Lana you don’t have to do this.” She said choosing her words carefully.
“Carol? I have to no one listens to me and I’m already lonely with no one to even recognize me. Why should I live through all this pain?” she said tears streaming down her face.
Carol didn’t know any of this and felt bad that she could have helped her sooner. She thought this was the only moment to help before she makes a big mistake. She got the courage to speak again.
“Look I know life can be hard believe me. My life wasn’t all happy go lucky. I had to make it that way. This was my decision not anyone else’s. Right now if you jumped I would be sad because you are the only true person I can call a friend. You are really cool and spectacular everyone at the job loves you. Would you really want to leave me alone?”
Lana looked at the edge. She saw all those people looking at her. She knew those people were scared because of her actions. She then looked at Carol who stretched her hand ready to take her away from what she wants to do. She kept thinking on what to do even though her mind was not clear but she did know this. Someone actually cares about her and she wanted that her whole life. She took Carol’s hand and they walked to the elevator. When they exited the building everyone was cheering over what she had done for her friend. Carol was happy that she didn’t lose a friend and was able to help her. From now on she was going to ask her if anything is wrong in hopes to make sure she doesn’t do something crazy like this again.
