The 9th floor

The 9th floor- ep.1

The 9th floor- ep.1

Feb 17, 2024

We didn’t mean to find her… we just wanted to play.

“Come on, I want a challenge!” August yelled to Robin and June as they slowed down, out of breath. August had always been the fastest of the two. This started in grade 2, when she easily outran their PE teacher, and the entire grade in a 2-kilometre race for their school carnival. August was fast, had good grades, good looks and was popular. June was not the fastest, but she had the best looks in her grade. She had silky, long black hair and light blue eyes. on the other hand, Robin was normal in every way- he had normal grades, looks, and speed. August and June could easily befriend the other popular kids, but they never wanted to because they had all been friends since 2nd grade. They were all 12 now, so no way either of them were going to leave the group. It was lunchtime, and Robin challenged August to a race, saying that today was going to be the day that she beat her. But like every other day, August outran them in the first 100 meters. “Sigh… nobody understands my talent.” August said jokingly. “Maybe I should leave you guys for the fast kids.” August flashed them a smile and slowly started walking over to the kids racing each other, waiting for one of them to run up to her and beg her to come back, like they always do. She waited and waited, getting slower with each step, waiting for it to happen. “Maybe you should!” Robin shouted to her suddenly. August stopped almost at once. ‘He must be joking, right? Were best friends, he can’t leave me.’  She thought as she spun around. She stared at him, waiting for anything signalling he was joking. She found nothing. Nothing that reached out to her and begged her to come back. Nothing. Nothing at all, until she saw the quickest smile, that he obviously didn’t want to give into. She felt a wave of relief wash over her. She ran back to Robin and hugged her. “I’m so glad you were just joking.”  She sniffed. “Come on,” Robin said, “let’s get off this stinky oval.” August giggled and walked with him and June down into the library. When they weren’t playing or racing, they loved to read and learn about sign language.
