The deputy tries the handle on the front door - locked. He elbows and shoulders it a few more times but the double doors just won't bulge. He then beckons to his associates - the one with the door breacher.
'Misses Halloway...if you don't open this door right now - we will breach it. I say again we will break it!'
There was no response - silence...only the occasional murmurs of the curious onlookers who have now gathered at the front yard, if there was not a large number of deputies - 11 to be exact, that stood in their way, perhaps the crowd will lend a helping hand in trying that door.
'OK - Break it.' Deputy Simon Taigen signals to his colleague. SMASH! The heavy doors broke apart as splinters flew about. The deputies’ rushes in, handguns drawn and flashlight strobes across the hallway randomly in the darkness. A large antique longcase clock down the hallway reads - 12.57am. Simon flick on the light switch - power is out. He then signals to his teammates to spread around. The air is thick, yet freezing as Simon exhales long wisps of cold air. He can't help but had a bad feeling of what's going to happen as he felt the hair on the back of his nape stood up.
As the deputies disperse around in the bungalow. It didn't take long for one of them shouting upstairs, 'Over here!' The men rushes the flight of stairs and stood before the master bedroom. Their eyes neither moved nor even blink. They just stood there and stare blankly at the bloodied scene that unfolds before them.
'O lord almighty - who will do such a thing?' Deputy Jacobson weeps as he struggles to comprehend what has happened.
'I think Detective Edward will be able to shed some light for us.’ Simon gulps as he takes his cell phone out and dial the detective's number.
45 minutes later, Edward arrives at the crime scene in his black Dodge Charger. He noticed a large crowd is gathering at the crime scene as more curious neighbours gathered bravely in their sleeping robes.
'Just another day in paradise.' As Edward utters to himself - he got out of his trusty ride and fumbled for his cigaratte case in his deep trench coat pockets - took one smokey out graciously - its what he usually calls it - and lights it up as one of the deputy on-guard nearby recognizes him instantly and ushers him to the house. As he stride across the front yard - the strobe of blue and red lights on their cars blinded him momentarily - still couldn't get used to them after all these years in service. Heck - its close to 2am in the middle of the night and here he is - another case to crack instead of cracking his head on his bed.
Edward walks up the flight of stairs dreadfully - every step he takes makes the old tread creaks loudly. Strange - he breathes out long wisp of cold air - he didn't remembered it was this cold outside. Somehow he felt more reluctant now to reach the top. As he finally reached the bedroom, he taught it was just another regular crime scene to behold but he was so bloody damn wrong. He just stood there for awhile - frozen at the doorway while staring blankly at the bloodied scene that lies before him - so much blood - he unwillingly drop his half-lit cigarette from his gaping mouth.
All these years in the field - nothing...nothing has ever prepared him for what unfolds before him. 'Jesus...is this real?" A flash from one of the deputy camera lights up and blinded him momentarily...again - reminding him that this is as real as it gets.
'Yes it is Detective.' Simon answered. 'I wished it wasn't but it really is.'
Misses Halloway...what's left of her mostly - gruesome and disturbing. There is a large cavernous hole that resembles a bloated and extended tunnel from where her vagina used to be. Ripped and torn apart - her partial entrails were exposed as if her intestines were being pulled apart from the inside - and seems to be eaten - as half of it now lies exposed on the white satin bedsheets with a pool of blood. Her iris were all white - no traces of her pupils. Fresh blood seems to be still oozing from her sanguineous mouth - her long flowing hair now shoots straight up towards the ceiling. The same deputy who took a photo earlier stood closer to try to straighten down her hair with his pencil - but it won't bend as if her hair has been submerged in glue.
'How can her hair just stood right up like that?' Jacobson asked.
Both Edward and Simon shrugged their shoulders at the same time.
And both her arms were gripped tightly on the side of her queen bed - as if she just allow the miscreant to do his thing on her. Both her legs were stretched out wide open too like the moment before a woman gives birth. And speaking of giving birth - Misses Halloway was indeed pregnant - 9 months to be exact. What’s left of her womb now is just an empty and bloodied half eaten intestines spiraled in a tangled mess.
The smell was so pungent that Edward took a few steps back - out the door to catch his breath.
'Don't worry you are not the first one.' said Simon pointing to a pool of puke by the staircase.
Edward looks at him irritably without a word - walks back into the room confidently and do his thing - the thing that he has been trained for since in the academy. He flips out his notebook and took a pen graciously from his pocket. He seems to be writing details of the crime scene - handwriting so cursive that probably only he alone can understand and reads it.
'So what do you make of it?'
'First of all - her hands were not tied - I supposed she is under an influence?'
'Nope - we found no traces of any illegal drugs or alcohol in this room nor in the house.'
'We have searched the house thoroughly for it to begin with.' Jacobson joins in.
'Any sign of forced entry?'
'None - all the doors and windows were bolted from the inside. She must have taken safety precautions since she is about to deliver.'
'Does she have a criminal record? Was she booked for any crime or did she do anything bad that someone wants to get even at her?'
'Misses Halloway is one of the best cook in this town detective - all I know is that she keeps everyone coming back for more of her pasta.' Said Simon.
'Ok so she did not try to run or fought back but appears to be in a posture - allowing the culprit to do his damn thing?'
'Or perhaps her thing?' Simon suggested.
'We have to assume it is a male for now, do we have such cases before this?'
'Nope this is the first of its kind - we seldom have killings in this town - no released convict I know will ever do such an unspeakable thing. We usually only have robbery in this community and it is as peaceful as it ever was - until now.'
'Ok so where is her husband right now?'
'We have managed to contact him - albeit shocked he was - he is rushing back from the airport right now on a flight to LA.'
Deputy Jacobson noticed something peculiar in the half end of her intestine.
'It appears that her intestines were being eaten.' Jacobson points to a bite mark.
'Ok so we could be dealing with a wild animal or some lunatic cannibal in here.' Edward suggested.
'She allows the animal to eat her? Come on who will be so damn stupid to let some animal maul her up...besides we don't have any wolves or grizzly bears in here. This town only have lovely salmons to fish for.'
'Not even dogs?' asked Edward.
'The one that I know lives in the next town - 50 miles from here' Jacobson added.
'Ok so we are either dealing with a werewolf or some crazy shit monster in here then.' Suggested Edward.
'I am not a fan of the supernatural and I can tell you this is nonsense.' Simon countered.
'Any sign of her fetus?'
‘Nope - I supposed whoever or whatever did this - it must have already ate it up.'
'Any witnesses?'
'Only her neighbours which heard her screaming and claims not to take her baby.'
'I would like to speak to them now if I could.'
'Sure - they are just downstairs on the couch.' said Jacobson.
Edward walks back down the stairs and saw an elderly couple being interviewed by a female deputy.
'Are you Mr and Mrs. Cane?'
'Yes I am - is Denise alright? Can we see her?' Mrs. Cane asked.
'I don't think that is such a good idea for now.'
'Is she still alive then?' asked William Cane.
'I am afraid that she is already decease.' The couple gasped for a moment.
'Tell me what did you heard?'
'I heard her screaming - it lasted for more than a minute. I was asleep when I heard it and…me and my husband rushed towards her door but we couldn't get to her. That's when William rang you guys up.'
'Go on.'
'Gosh those unholy screams - it’s so abominable - I can still hear them in my head.'
'Did she say anything in particular when she was screaming?'
'Yes she did - she keeps begging for her child not to be eaten.'
Edward retraced his steps back towards the room - by now the paramedics have arrived and are preparing to remove the body from the crime scene.
'Just a second.' Edward wants to examine the body further.
'Sure...you can take your time offic-' the female paramedic walks out of the room in revolt and vomits on the next bedroom floor.
'You're welcomed.'
Edward gets as close as he ever wants to be and begins to take a second look at her while both Deputy Simon and Jacobson and the paramedics stood nearby. They have heard a lot about the cases that has been resolved by Detective Edward. A stellar exemplary in his department, his superiors always look up high and proud of his work. They even claim there was never a homicide case unsolved by him - but let’s see how he will handle this odious and repugnant one.
'Guys come and take a look at this.'
Both deputies edge closer as Edward points to a small yellowish discharge between Misses Halloway legs on the bedsheets.
'What’s that?'
'We thought it could be her - you know cum.' giggled Jacobson shyly.
'Do she look like she is having sex to you…you scumbag?' Simon countered sarcastically.
'Can you take a sample of this - I want it analyzed.'
'Sure thing detective - it will take a couple of days'
'A couple of days is fine - besides I've got another case to crack on this town as well,' said Edward.
