I'm sitting in the middle of my studio apartment the giant window streaming sunlight, surrounded by canvas that I've so furiously painted this place wasn't just a sanctuary. It was the place I told my fiancé that I couldn't do it anymore, the place where I found out the my fears became ever so real and my hopes and dreams lifted into reality, art comes in so many forms and I'm glad I get to view it all. Music and coffee makes my mind feel at ease and right now my grove has been tuned too Seven Nation Army on my CD player, music makes my painting explosive, all of them perched on sky high walls, in a not so big studio apartment.
My head nodding to the beat, my paintbrush dancing along the canvas then my music is caught off short, by the screeching call of my roommate Nina.
"Josephine Amber Kendall," I turn to see her hand smitten on my CD player. "I've been trying to reach you all day." she stomps her foot, always short tempered.
She picks up my phone of the stool, dangling it in my face. "You should upgrade on that ratchet ass phone."
"It's a flip phone I don't need anything else," I fumble for an excuse, grabbing my phone from her claws that she calls cat claws. "And sorry I was busy painting a school project." I shrug my shoulders, pointing towards my painting that I've been working on and slum against the one bare wall I have.
"Whatever, your always doing a school project Jo." She says popping her bubble gum and starts leaning against one of my freshly done paintings hanging on the wall.
"Nina, look out I just freshly painted that-" I sigh, as I just spent hours completing that painting for my schools art gallery.
"Shit Jo, you need to warn me next time." She touches her shirt in disgust "Follow me while I change." Signaling me like I'm one of her assistant from the news room that Nina works at and already starts walking grabbing the hem of her t-shirt and taking it off. Before she even enters her own damn room, "As I was saying, my stupid camera guy flaked, and I need someone."
"And that someone is me?"
As she continues pulling out drawers for a new shirt, "Precisely," as I was just about to say no she cuts me off yet again. "Look Jo, you're an art student, you are the only one that can handle a camera better than anyone I know. It's a basketball game, state championship the biggest game of a year."
"You know Nathan is on that team Nina, it's his team. I don't think I can do it, I'm not ready yet." I stutter hoping she would understand.
She rolls her eyes, "It's almost been a year. He's has obviously moved. Maybe you should as well now, get dressed and hurry game starts in twenty minutes."
Rolling my eyes in utter devastation, I can't complain. Nina has done a lot for me, she got me a spot at an art gallery, and she's been a pretty decent roommate when I had nowhere to turn and a pretty great friend for pushing me out of my comfort zone. But the feeling of seeing Nathan again, scares the hell out of me I haven't seen him since that night in my room.
Walking back into my room I glance along my one wall of paintings, past memories taunt me as I still haven't found the nerve to rip them off this very wall and throw them out.
Nathan was my inspiration, my paintings had meaning behind them and I had to get it through my head that Nathan and I weren't Nathan and I anymore and still believing a four year relationship turned sour. I broke up with him when he was standing right over my painting of the ocean that we went to the first time we met. I found out that I wasn't the one for him even if he was the one that proposed that he wanted something that I couldn't give him.
"Jo, you ready?" Nina shouted from the kitchen, I grab my leather jacket and shut the bedroom door. Placing a ball cap on my head, grabbing the camera and slip on my raged converse, and covering my eyes with wide brimmed sunglasses.
"Is that what you're really going to wear that to the state championship?" Nina shrugs her purse on to her shoulder, and with a heavy sigh, "Alright let's get going hobo."
I cease a smile, before locking the door behind us. "So, what's my job for today?" I ask Nina.
"Just stand there and make me look pretty, I create the magic here!" She opens the elevator shaft climbing in, this elevator shaft is so cranky and old reminds me of my father.
"Alright sounds good." I answer back, with a sigh of relief. I'm glad not having to talk or have someone look at me; I want everything to go unnoticed for my last two years here.
Not to long later we arrived at the gym, people already sitting down in the bleachers wearing blue and white the school colors. The last time I was here, I stood right here watching my fiancé play with his team.
"Joey? I'm talking!" Nina stated.
Drawing me out of my thoughts, I hated when she called me Joey or anyone to say the lease; I'm not a baby kangaroo. "Sorry, Nina what was it?"
"We are interviewing the team first, and then we will be filming the entire game." She looks up and grabs my chin, bringing my face directly to hers. "They won't let anyone film here besides the school news room, something about not distracting the team."
"Alright," I nod my head in agreement, but my eye catches the players warming up and once again I seeing Nathan.
Nina nudges my side, "Here's the co-captain Keegan Murray." She signals me to turn the camera on, and look up to see Keegan Murray, Nathan's enemy on the court.
I've always seen him play on the court but never got a close up view of him, his eyes a beautiful color of blue champagne. His hair dark, making his eyes seem even bluer and a basketball tucked into his right arm.
I couldn't stop starring, "Oh, yeah sorry." I gulp, "Rolling." I turn my hand into motion and he's just glaring at me, shit I shouldn't have spoken.
"Anyways," Nina continues. "How does it feel to be in the final game?"
"Pretty fantastic, I think I'm doing great I've been picking up a lot of the slack. But that's why I'm co-captain got to carry the team somehow." His voice surprisingly sweet but deep and a little tiny bit arrogant, and a smirk to add to it.
"So what do you do?" Nina asks, as if she watches basketball. She hated going to anything sports related.
Keegan looks stunned, shocked at the point she doesn't know shit about basketball.
"He's a point guard." I whisper to Nina, Keegan looks at me like I should be the one interviewing instead. Nina still looks at me to repeat. "He's a point guard." I speak louder.
Keegan's rolls his eyes in annoyance "God, this is taking up to much of my time. At least have someone who knows basketball interview me instead." He turns and begins to walk away.
Nina looks at me speechless, shrugging her shoulders her body language saying 'what should I do now'.
I brush past her, and grab Keegan's arm. He turns to look at me his body over shadowing mine, "Can I help you?" He asks.
"I-I-" I'm stuttering, why am I stuttering? Then I noticed that the whole crowd is practically staring at me.
"Spit it out, my god." He rolls his eyes, looking at my hand still locked on to his arms.
I gulped hard, swallowing my ego "My friend was interviewing you, and you just walked away." I whisper, hopefully not to be heard.
The ball in his arm starts to spin on his finger in annoyance of the situation. "I walked away because she," he point towards Nina "Doesn't know shit about basketball, but the camera guy does?"
"Can you please just-?"
He grumbles to the side, cutting me off. "I have a game to win, and not worrying about interviews. You see that guy up there?" He points toward the bleachers; a man in a suit is standing with a clipboard. "He's here for me, unlike you guys. I'll be in the NBA soon, and you guys will be nothing to me. So no thanks."
At least he said thanks?
He drops the ball to the ground keeping it at a steady dribble as he pulls down the brim of my hat. "Now, let me shine and impress people who care about the game." He walks away for the second and final time.
The crowd eventually looks away from the situation, and here I am standing there removing the hat from my head. I'm about to but it back on when I familiar face, shows itself.
Just my luck, it's Nathan. "Josephine?" His blonde hair tousled in front of his face, and his blue eyes sparkling like the Dominican sea.
"Hi Nathan," I wave my hand, placing the camera on my shoulder. I look around for Nina, but she is nowhere to be found.
He crosses his arms. "I knew it was you Jo, I missed you. You know, not a day goes by that I don't."
Typical, so typical of Nina to leave me in a situation like this, "Well you should've thought of that before you cheated on me Nathan, God! What did you think was going to happen?"
"Well I'm here for redemption!" He smiles, his hand resting on my shoulder.
I politely take his hand off my shoulder, looking at his hand in disgust. "This isn't the time or place Nathan, I'm done. We-" I gestured between me and him "are done."
He laughs with an ugly smirk, "You know I'm glad you are so strong headed but trust me you'll come crawling back."
I didn't even want to reply, but I couldn't help it two men? In one day, being complete asses. "I've already met someone; I don't need you in my life." I walked away, being the bigger person.
I hear him snickering in the background, fuck me and I wonder why women go lesbian.
Angst holds the crowd. The players are drenched in sweat, the dribbling ball falls to a standstill, and silence takes up the room. Keegan makes the final shot into overtime, in mid-flight, hope seem enters his eyes as he knows the scots are watching him and his next step in his asshole career.
As the ball gracefully hits the brim and deem itself into the net, Keegan gets smothered by his team mates. Hugging and smiling together, Keegan smiles and he actually has quite a charming smile, which is a surprise that he has time to smile in his egotistic schedule. The crowd jumps from the bleachers, and approaches the winning team, shock, and excitement declares them State Champions.
Nina then butts in, actually showing up for once. "Keep rolling I want to get all of this." She's practically gleaming with excitement.
"Yeah, yeah," I say holding the camera and rolling my eyes in her sudden appearance, watching what would've been my whole world Nathan look not even a bit happy for his team but more angry. Nathan's face is beaten red, and just before I can even jump up to confront him he's already taken Keegan down.
