I have never understood why parents get angry every time they talk to me...
Remember that I'm only 7 years old, after all!
When we are young, all we want to do is play. I don't understand why they worry about silly things like swinging a sword for hours or looking at those strange books that make no sense. Just saying that they don't even have pictures is enough. Dad says I'll understand when I grow up, but he still clings to the idea that it will be sooner rather than later.
'Remember the deal, Luke,' he said with a certain pride. From afar, you could see those big, determined blue eyes, not to mention the mocking smile at the end.
That stupid bet immediately came to mind. It had to be a trick; I'm sure he could blow out a candle with a clap, just like Dad or my brother Jon.
Jon was an Awakened, achieving it at the age of 5, and yet he had always been my best friend. But in the last few weeks, he has distanced himself from me. He no longer has time; he joined Dad's group of obsessed ones who only know how to fight, even though there are so many other things to do in life, like eating Mom's pumpkin pies or going to the river with our friends.
My brother felt a certain pressure when we were around, so much so that it was scary. But what I hated the most was his condescending tone, 'You're probably still too small for this; I guess there's no hurry.' Who does he think he is? Just because he can use magic doesn't mean he has to be so unbearable. Thanks to that silly bet, I'll have to start training with them tomorrow. That silly Jon will realize what I'm made of.
'Guys, don't fight. Luke is a man of his word, so starting tomorrow, he'll join our training. We count on you.'
The sun was shining directly on my face; there was no hiding the fact that it was a new day, and to my misfortune, I had to go with my dad and my brother. I still wonder what's so special about this or being an Awakened.
When I went down the stairs, I saw that my family was already having breakfast.
'Do I really have to do this, Dad?'
'A deal is a deal, Luke,' my father turned to me and casually replied.
After finishing breakfast and before leaving, my father mentioned that he owed me something and that, if I was still so obsessed with not training, he would allow it. Of course, I accepted the deal; I was completely sure it was the best option. What a surprise I was in for.
We stood in front of a tree; my father asked for absolute silence and told me to watch...
Suddenly, a white light began to envelop my father's body, and out of nowhere, he threw a punch right into the center of the tree, which would collapse not long after.
My skin tingled, and without understanding anything that had happened, I began to open my mouth without even realizing it.
'A fly is going to get in your mouth, idiot,' Jon commented mockingly.
My father sighed and turned towards us, 'This is just a glimpse of what you could achieve, Luke. What do you say, are you in?'
My body, still not responding due to the shock, just nodded my head, saying yes.
'It's settled. Let's begin.'
In the coming weeks, we would dedicate ourselves to strengthening my body with basic exercises, such as sprints, push-ups, or sit-ups, as my body is still not considered fit for using magic. My father believes that training is important to be able to defend myself if necessary.
"Avoid violence whenever possible, but maintain the ability to defend yourself when it's inevitable."
Little by little, I started to become more interested in the things my father was capable of doing; they were simply almost "inexplicable" things. I tried it myself, attempting to replicate the routine he did to break the tree, but I ended up hurting my hand. After laughing a bit about what had happened, my father tousled my hair.
"Time will tell, Luke. Getting stronger doesn't happen overnight; you have to be consistent and not succumb to despair, step by step."
Balar Hazewolf is currently a knight of Kitezh, a former adventurer, and my father. He was a member of various dungeon expeditions organized by the Adventurer's Guild. It was during one of these expeditions that he met my mother, whom he would end up falling deeply in love with. Without any hesitation, he told me that after the expedition where he met her, he went to find her and invited her for a drink to celebrate. However, she slapped him and told him she wasn't interested. Knowing my dad, I'm sure he didn't give up until my mom finally agreed.
The truth is, I have no doubts about why Mom ended up going out with an idiot. Dad has a well-defined chin, although it's barely noticeable lately because he grew a very full beard. His ash-brown hair was kept long and tied back with a band, while his eyebrows were thick and fierce. From afar, you could sense the great presence that his eyes showed, that look that said, "you can always count on me."
Time passed, and the training gradually stopped being heavy and painful; it became... fun. It was a fact that it was easier for me to move, and Dad's companions helped me in whatever way they could, correcting me in postures or the way of doing exercises. The atmosphere of camaraderie was optimal for a novice like me.
Despite the progress and the way I was accepted into their group, doubts persisted. Was I truly destined for this path? The imposing shadow of my brother's magical prowess cast doubts on my abilities. Jon's disapproving looks and condescending comments during training fueled my inner determination. I was determined to prove him wrong, that I could stand out... even though I still couldn't use magic, one day everything would change.
At some point, it was like that, but not in the way I imagined.
On a continent divided by race and magic, Luke awakens at a young age, marking the beginning of his journey to greatness. With his older brother, Jon, recognized as a prodigy in magic, the shadow of expectations drives him to surpass his family and discover the truth about his past.
Along the way, a dark threat emerges, unleashing chaos and revelations that will change their lives. Determined, he will face his destiny and find his place in a world full of secrets.
