The nobles rushed to the middle of the ball room, like cornered mice, glancing at every nook and cranny as if a monster would jump out and claim their life. A good number of them approached the exit in an attempt to leave but were blocked by the guards on grounds of investigation for possible murder of the monarch.
Daphne watched as these men and women, who had been enjoying the lavish festivities and cheering in the name of the king until a few minutes back, now tried to flee, not a second glance at the ruler they bowed to. Fear for their own life prevented them from worrying about pretty much anything else.
The glamorous gowns, flashy jewellery, sparkling chandeliers overwhelmed her as she shut her eyes, drowning out the arrogant demands of the nobleman and cries of the women. The whole world spun under her, stripping her of all but one thought.
In the end, even he, a man constantly surrounded by people and their praises, died with no one beside him.
Her lips spread into a bitter smile as she vigorously rubbed the corner of her eyes, determined to not let a single tear slip by. Then, gathering the fabric of the skirt of her ballgown, Daphne approached the elevated podium where tradition foretold the King usually sat during the festivities along with his children and wife.
Currently there were only four high seats, one of which was the royal throne itself. All four were empty.
She passed by the late monarch, resisting taking a last glance with all her will, ascending the short flight of stairs, clearly making a statement of power and authority.
"Lords and Ladies," She let her eyes wander past the majority of them who had quieted down, their attention on her. "Our guards are positioned to assist and ensure everyone's safety. Kindly cooperate with them in further investigations and rest assured, there is no immediate threat within these walls. Have trust in these men who forego festivities and celebrations solely to maintain peace in our kingdom."
Meanwhile she would follow the lead she knew might have an idea of what happened. She turned to the man standing guard behind her, closer now after the previous ruckus.
"Come on..." She murmured. "Let's go have a little chat with Arian."
