The Draconem Wars - A sparkle of fire and flame

Chapter 1 - The Uninvited Guest

Chapter 1 - The Uninvited Guest

Mar 05, 2021

An empty bullet case ricochets off the cold concrete floor, as Katrina Weldens visualize herself pulling the trigger of her shiny black Desert Eagle with a loud and echoing BANG! Her aim was point blank towards the back of a man's head as the .50 caliber AE round bore through his thick skull cleanly with such velocity that the bullet embeds deeply into the opposite wall of a large antechamber. The lifeless body crashes to the ground as thick warm crimson blood oozes out from the very large hole that she just made. At that very moment, Katrina felt a great sense of relief and satisfaction, knowing that the one she slain was the one that she's been hunting for as long as she could possibly remembered.
However, when she steps closer to inspect his face, it became obscured; not disfigured or veiled but it was intentionally shrouded. Nonetheless, she did notice his hair color was a reminiscent chestnut brown. Instinctively, she knew that he was someone close to her, that she was certain of it. As she struggled to recall her memory, alas she was awakened by the buzzing sound of an incoming message from the tablet on her bedside.
"This is the captain. We shall begin our planetary descent on Andonia in 10 minutes. I expect you all to be formally attired and prep with your gear. Good day troopers. Ramirez out."
As the announcement fizzles, she rubs her head, wondering who it was that she killed from her dream. It was always the same vision; repeating itself over and over again like an old tape recorder. Always visualizing herself pulling the trigger, but not knowing who the heck she kept killing in the same dream. At times she even wondered whether she is suffering from some form of a delusional syndrome. Perhaps it's her significant role that's taking a heavy toll on her. She felt her head swaying heavily again - like a drunkard that got hit by an oncoming train, the apparent results from an inadequate and constant sleep. She curses silently at her negligence. With a heavy heart, Katrina sighs as she walks towards her closet and don her jet black uniform and holster her trusty dual Desert Eagles by her hips.
She walks to the mirror and stare at herself intently with those blue eyes as flashes of memories of the lives that she has taken appeared vividly. She could almost hear their screams and felt their agony; one by one as those memories seared through her brain subtly. At times, she often wondered what her life would have been if she didn't take up the roll as a hired assassin. Perhaps she will be doing gardenscaping, since it’s always what she wanted to do if she follows a different path. As it all happens so quickly during her youth, Katrina got separated from her parents during her teens, 15 years of age to be exact.
Her father, Magnus Weldens; charming yet wise, started his early career in the political arena. Always bickering with those vile politicians from the Kanos government, as he despises them acting selfishly for their own personal gains, while the people suffers from their delinquencies. Ironically, this is also where he met Katrina's mother; Sheila Everlain, beautiful as she ever was during a sitting in the parliament; who despite her unquestioned loyalty towards the Kanos sovereignty, tends to agree with Magnus at times over the unscrupulous methods that her government used to suppress the dissidents. Many times she felt torn apart on whether to relinquish her position as a senator and to join Magnus instead in his quest to revolt against the Kanos sovereignty for the greater good of the nation or to continue acting in self-defiance against her lover's ideal visions for the formation of a far better and more competent government that needs more time to prove itself. But she feared more of what would become of the new legislation, either more dominant or lawlessness should Magnus confederacy succeeds in spite of their lack of experience in governing such a complicated and divided nation here on earth. Despite their opposing views, Magnus and Sheila are able to maintain their romance with one way or another as they always put aside their roles whenever they are together. Their love is true and untwined.
However, their relationship was short lived, as the top brass of the Kanos government soon discovers their forbidden relationship. Sheila was captured at work one day and pronounced as a traitor and her crimes are punishable for espionage with high treason. Without access to an attorney, they quickly try her in an isolated encampment and abruptly sentenced her to a life imprisonment. While the other higher ranking officers disagree to such a light sentence, they preferred her to be executed instead, as to set an example for others on the crimes that she was accused of, but never committed. Sheila fought hardly for her innocence but it only fell deftly on many ears as her bureaucratic allies are powerless and unable to overturn her biased verdict.
Angered with this revelation, Magnus hastily formed an attack squad to liberate her from the deadly clutches of the government that she once proudly served. Sheila was to be hanged publicly, so that her execution will be a reminder to anyone who so wishes to oppose the Kanos government.
During the rescue attempt, things went awry as Magnus was surprised to be confronted by Kato, the supreme ruler of Kanos who was also present to witness Sheila’s hanging. Caught completely off-guard, as little did Magnus realized that not only Kato was adept at being such a ruthless dictator but he was also skilled in martial arts and in closed armed combat. Kato and his Enforcers managed to quickly overpower Magnus, leaving him with a broken arm and badly bruised while his team of eager liberators were swiftly eliminated during the short-lived skirmish. Sheila was of course shackled during the entire engagement as she tries to comfort her inamorata with words of affection. Annoyed with her encouragement, Kato draws his sidearm and open fire at Sheila, killing her instantly.
Katrina, who was also present at the gallows, watched in disbelief that her mother was murdered in cold blood. She almost took a stray bullet herself during the fray, if a man did not rushes forward to suffer it for her. Magnus ordered Katrina to flee while he shouted orders towards his disguised men among the crowds to return fire at the enforcers.
Confused with the ongoing bloodshed and the inability of her father to rescue her mom, Katrina broke free and slipped away from the skeltering crowds. It was also the last time her father lay eyes on her as he too manages to escape during the battle with the assistance of his remainder liberation squad. From that moment onwards, Katrina will always blame her father for all his failures. Failure to seek judgment; failure to subdue the oppressor and most of all, failure to save her mother that she loved the most.
She felt lost and wandered alone in the outskirts for many years while she tries to seek solace. With an uncertain destination, she was often taken advantage from ill-natured men who pleasures at violating her chastity; as her beauty was incomparable for her age. Eventually her body was battered and her will to live was broken. One day, she contemplated suicide by jumping off a cliff; but at that dire moment, she was counseled by a government official who stood nearby and knew exactly who Katrina was, for he has worked closely with her mother before her untimely death. He advised her instead of ending her pitiful life, why not join the Kanos government so that one day she can get close enough to Kato in order to seek vengeance upon him.
In the course of time, she finally heeds the mysterious man advice and decided to join the Kanos dominion at the age of 24 with an altered identity. During her enlistment, she quickly gained her notoriety by seeking to apprehend and execute the weak ones that stood in her way as she wouldn't want to be weak and inept like her father. She rose through the ranks swiftly, starting as Private and quickly promoted to First Lieutenant and ensuing as Captain of her deadly squad known as The Vanguarders.
The Vanguarders are a special elite force, often specializes in subjugating their foes with extreme atrocities. They are skilful assassins, trained in the brutal arts of killing, assassination and infiltration of highly secured installations. At an early stage, Katrina was selectively hand-picked by her mentors to lead as she possesses not only quick wits of perception and leadership traits but also her dexterity and her prowess in vanquishing her opponents. Her favorite weapon of choice is the modified PGM 338 sniper rifle; lightweight yet still packs a punch, she never misses her targets with it.
As Katrina heinous profession progresses, her mentors admired her tenacity and put her in charge of her entire unit. A position which she relishes with great satisfaction. For within a short time, she became a feared icon among her enemies; like a grim reaper wavering her scythe upon her unsuspecting foes, mocking and taunting them. And now her task is almost completed on earth and she will be needed elsewhere. She was ultimately summoned to lead a special battalion that will be battling against the GATOR insurgents on an alien planet billions of miles away. Katrina volunteered without hesitation, for she knew that Kato was also residing on that planet, which puts her closer to her goals for avengement.
As Katrina recovers from her reverie in front of the mirror, she utters to herself.
                    "Just another day in paradise."
