The knife strapped to his waist felt heavier than ever. Each of his movements could give him away. Sam breathed shallowly. He crept around the corner and walked slowly and carefully. The voice still echoed in his head. A restless man rolled over in the bed next to the criminal. In the corner laid a locked chest. Sam trod lightly towards it, kneeling in front of it and taking off his gloves.
"Aperio." left his mouth like a ghost and the lock clicked falling into his hands.
He slowly opened the chest and grabbed the item after his client's heart. It was a letter heavy with coin. The seal on the back had the emblem of the king. The same one that foolish knight wore so proudly.
Sneaking out of the house was easier than sneaking in, the open window was the perfect escape for someone who wasn't afraid of falling. Sam sat on the sill and swung his legs over the edge. It was maybe a ten-foot drop onto a dirt road.
As he fell, he whispered a spell, "Tardo," His descent slowed to a gentle drop. Sam's feet hit lightly on the dirt and he took off in a sprint.
The tell tale sound of footsteps in pursuit of him rang in his ears. Sam almost laughed. The foolish knight was back another night. Sam sped up without magic and leaped a fence. He heard the knight fall. The letter in Sam's hand was slipped under a door frame in the blink of an eye. Sam leaned against the outer wall of the village and grinned. The knight stood before him sword unsheathed.
"If you move I shall run you through." the knight spoke poshly.
"On what grounds, sir? Check me. On my person, you'll find nothing that is not in my name and no houses evidence of my entering." Sam imitated the posh accent of the knight.
"Then why did you run from me, thief?"
"Most people run from strange men in the night."
"Coward."
Sam laughed, "If you wish to refer to me in negative ways, that's your choice, sir. Let me reassure you, however, coward does not describe the man before you."
"Be on your way." the knight said dismissively.
Sam walked past the knight before turning and tapping loudly on the shoulder of his armor. The knight turned, puzzled. Sam swooped in and kissed his cheek before sprinting away laughing at the bewildered face of the knight.
