The Heart of The Wild

The Beginning

The Beginning

Nov 10, 2017

My heart bumped loud in my ears as my nerves rose, I stood in readying possibilities at the starting line in the track.

My brown hair was pulled up in a tight ponytail, my maroon jersey bearing my number — 45 — on it.

I examined my fellow competitors. There were 10 boys and 9 girls. Counting me, that'd be 20 competitors. I stared straight ahead and listened for the sound of a gunshot. And i heard it.

I took off running, quickly passing everyone, I marked the people I passed by reading their numbers. I said them in my head. 46, 92, 56, 97, 81, 4... I thought.

Number five was all the way in the front, bypassing them all at top speed. I felt the need to pass him. I pushed myself harder, too fast to read the numbers on the backs of the people I was passing. My heart was beating faster and faster, my lungs aching for air.

I always loves sports, I was in track, Basketball, Volleyball, softball, etc. Etc. I always felt the need to beat everyone at sports.

I was on 5's tail, and as I got closer, I recognised him as one of the boys in my Freshman Year class, I was in my Sophomore year now.

His name was Jackson Millers. I was running faster then ever. My feet hurt, as well my chest and lungs. Jack was a jerk, bragging about everything, whether or not he was even good at it. But NO ONE beat me at running.

Finally, 5 Meyers before the finish line, I passed him. I crossed the line, thankful I could have a break. 5 years ago, I had one my first race. I haven't lost since.

Mom picked me up, dad hasn't since I was in pre-school. He left us while I was in pre-school.

The car rumbled along the road as the engine roared loudly. My mother's black, wavy hair was whipping wildly in the wind.

We arrived back home and saw Jamie walking out of the door to meet us, Jamie was my sister. She was the exact opposite of me, blonde hair, dark skin (from dad), hated sports and the outdoors, and loved to make pretty herself up before anything.

"Lucy! Come inside... don't touch me! Your sweaty!" She this while we were walking inside.

As I was walking to my room to change, my breath hitches. I ran as fast as I could to the bathroom, ready to throw up, but it never came.

I decided a goodnight's sleep would be best, and because the race was at 7:00 pm, it's be a good time to go to sleep if any.

•Time Skip

I woke up in the middle of the night, starving. My stomach hurt like heck and my mouth was dry. I rushed downstairs as silently as I could. I opened the fridge and pulled out an orange, and filled a cup with water.

I ate and drank quickly, they looked delicious right now. I took a night of the orange, but I immediately spat it back out. It tasted terrible, and that's strange for me because I love oranges. There not old because we got them yesterday.

I gulped down the water, and that orange made me lose my appetite, despite the growling stomach. Later that night I woke up. I felt trapped, in a cage. I looked around and saw a window. I rammed up against it, once, twice... BAM! I was free. I jumped onto the ground and ran as fast as I could, my paws hitting the ground... wait, PAWS!? I decided to ignore that aspect until I got to safe ground.

I reached the safety of trees, exhausted. I looked at myself as best I could. I had black fur tracing all the way from my head to my paws. What is happening?
