During ancient times, Bloodgates—space rifts that spew Dreadbornes, crimson-eyed monsters driven only by the instinct of destruction and manslaughter—started appearing throughout the world, endangering the population of humanity. Just as humanity stood on the brink of extinction, some individuals began to exhibit supernatural and magical abilities, which they called "Gifts." Those individuals were then called "Paragons." They were the world’s heroes as they swore to protect humanity not only from the Bloodgates and their Dreadbornes, but also to protect the world from evil-doers and other beings that sought destruction alone. Together, these individuals would later form an organization called AEGIS (Assembly for Extradimensional Governance & Interdiction Security), inviting all awakened Paragons to serve and protect the world, forging new legends.
The Year 20XX
The sky was tinted with smoke and crimson red. The air cracked with corrupted mana, thick and suffocating like a shroud of ash. Bloodgates were ripping open reality like jagged tears in a curtain, spawning by the hundreds. This scale was not just rare; it was apocalyptic.
Unlike normal dungeons, these portals spewed Dreadbornes who could not be tamed or controlled. The Saints and Clerics—those gifted with the divine power to anchor reality—were overwhelmed, their barriers shattering under the sheer weight of the encroaching darkness. Across the battlefield, paragons of every rank fought what seemed to be a losing war. The monsters weren't just killing; they were hunting. They targeted the defensive chokepoints and the healers first with a horrifying coordination that turned the defense into a ruthless slaughter.
High above the carnage, Erebus, the Demon Lord of Wrath, stood in mid-air. He was a mountain of obsidian flesh and jagged horns, his every breath a plume of dark smoke that blotted out the midday sun. He smirked at the chaos he had sown, watching the world burn from his throne of shadows.
Below him, nine figures—barely fifteen years old—stood as the last line of defense. They were battered, their uniforms torn, their magic flickering like dying embers. Vesper unleashed rapid bursts of magic bullets beside her; Pyro roared as a ball of fire erupted from his hands, only to be swatted away by the Demon Lord like an insect.
"This is it," Byte muttered, his fingers flying across a holographic interface. A dozen digital drones buzzed around Erebus in a futile swarm. "My systems are showing a 98% chance of... well, not surviving this."
"Then we fight for the two percent!" Canis yelled back, his garnet gemstone glowing. He summoned a trio of spectral wolves that lunged at the demon's legs, but Erebus simply stepped forward, shattering their forms into motes of light.
"IS THIS REALLY ALL THE HEROES THIS WORLD HAS TO OFFER?" Erebus laughed, a sound like a tectonic grind that shook the earth. "How foolish. You are skilled at dodging, but to think even the nine of you—the supposed 'prodigies' of this realm—cannot land a single blow... you are not heroes. You are merely pebbles in the path of a god. Beings of this realm are truly pathetic!"
He stopped mid-laugh, forced to defend against a flight of ice lances and the graze of a light-arrow that hissed past his cheek. He looked at his attackers with sudden annoyance. Fryst and Astra were smirking at him, a flicker of defiance in their eyes.
"Never underestimate us, Erebus!" Astra retorted, her voice clear despite the chaos. "As we, the beings you deem weak, will still defeat you!"
A spark of hope ignited among her comrades. Astra watched, her chest heaving, as the group unleashed a desperate, coordinated assault. She had already summoned her Zodiac spirit, Sagittarius, alongside the Aster Aquila—a brilliant bow flickering with starlight, formed from her floating celestial codex.
Beside her, Sonata struck a powerful chord on his spectral instrument; the sound waves rippled through the party's souls, forcing their mana pools while simultaneously blasting back approaching Dreadbornes with concussive sonic waves. Sage moved with a dancer's grace, her spear glowing. She enchanted Titania’s numerous blades with "Holy Edge" and reinforced Fryst’s ice walls with "Diamond Durability," before enchanting her own body to strike at the demon's flank with her spear.
Above them, Byte’s magic-infused drones peppered Erebus with constant aerial fire, highlighting weak points in the demon's mana shield for Vesper to exploit. But even with their combined power, they were barely holding back the tide. Vesper’s bullets were only scratching the shield; Titania was straining to parry a clawed strike; and Fryst’s ice barrier was already starting to crack.
They were losing. They all knew it.
Then, nine pillars of light descended from the heavens. These were their mentors, their Clan Leaders—they were the most renowned Alpha-Rank Paragons of this time. Their gemstones blazed with a radiance that momentarily blinded the Dreadbornes.
"You fools! Get back!" the Aquamarine Alpha bellowed.
"You’ve done enough!" the Ruby Alpha shouted back, her voice breaking with a mother’s grief. "This beast is beyond your level. It is beyond ours."
The realization hit Astra like a physical blow. Their mentors weren't there to reinforce the line. They were there to replace it.
"No! What are you doing?" Sonata cried out, reaching for them. Sage and Titania tried to lung forward, but a crystalline barrier—the absolute authority of an Alpha—sprang up, sealing the young heroes in a protective cage.
The Amethyst Alpha, the eldest of the pillars, turned to Astra. Through the translucent wall, his eyes met hers with a terrifying serenity.
"We have to do this, Astra," he said softly. "Erebus cannot be slain today. But he can be contained."
"No! You can't leave us!" Astra screamed, throwing herself against the barrier. "Please!"
"Listen to me!" her mentor’s voice boomed, filled with a final, desperate love. "You are the future. You are stronger than any of us were at your age. Trust each other. Always."
The nine Alphas began the forbidden chant. Their gemstones began to pulse, not with magic, but with the very essence of their souls. They were pouring their life-force into a seal of absolute gravity.
"Live your life to the fullest, kid," the Ruby Alpha whispered to Pyro, a fierce pride in her eyes. "Be the hero I know you are."
The spell reached its crescendo. A blinding vortex of pure, sacrificial energy began to pull Erebus inward. The Demon Lord roared in genuine terror as glowing celestial chains, fueled by the souls of the masters, latched onto his limbs, dragging him toward the center of the collapse.
The young heroes could only watch, paralyzed by the barrier, as their teachers—their family—dissolved into motes of golden light. One by one, the lights went out.
The Bloodgates began to seal. The crimson sky began to fade. The world went silent, save for the sound of settling ash.
Astra fell to her knees, her bow vanishing, her hands pressed into the dirt where her mentor had stood moments before. The weight of the world, and the silence of the dead, settled onto her shoulders.
"It's all my fault," she whispered into the void. "I wasn't strong enough."
