The Mouse in the Magic Hat -

The whole 2nd class, section A, was singing for Arjun. "Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you, Arjun," they sang with great energy. Arjun stood next to the teacher, who was also singing along. Arjun was shy and looked at everyone happily.
As everyone clapped and encouraged him, Arjun smiled back, his laugh genuine and full of happiness. The teacher told him, "Arjun, say thank you to everyone." Filled with happiness, Arjun shouted loudly, "Thank you so much, friends!" The teacher then asked, "What about a treat for your friends?"
Arjun immediately took two packets of chocolates from his bag and announced that he would share them with everyone. He started giving chocolates to his classmates, one by one. In return, they shook his hand and wished him, "Happy birthday." He gave his best friends an extra chocolate, which made the others ask, "Arjun, aren't I your friend, too?" Arjun, a little embarrassed, gave them extra chocolates as well.
Noticing this, the teacher said, "Silence, children, don't argue. He will give chocolates to everyone. Arjun, you continue."
As he went to the girls' side of the class, he continued to give out chocolates. One girl took the chocolate and shook his hand, but she held on tightly and wouldn't let go. Her face was bright with happiness. Arjun didn't understand why she was doing that. He wanted to tell her to let go so he could give chocolates to the others, but he couldn't remember her name. He just said, "Can you let go of my hand, please? I need to give chocolates to the others." She replied, "Okay!" and let go.
Even as he continued giving out chocolates, Arjun couldn't stop thinking about the girl who held his hand so tightly, wondering what her name was. After he had given a chocolate to everyone, he sat back down in his place. The teacher started the lecture, as the fun time was over. But Arjun was still lost in his thoughts, wondering who that girl was.
His friend Vasu, who was sitting next to him, asked, "Hey, can I get another chocolate?" Arjun, still curious about the girl, asked in return, "What's that girl's name?" Vasu responded, "I'll tell you if you give me three chocolates."
"That's too much," Arjun said. "Either you tell me, or I'll go and ask her myself." Vasu panicked and quickly said, "Hey, wait, I'll tell you. Just give me one chocolate."
Arjun gave him a chocolate, and Vasu told him, "Her name is Aditi." Arjun said "Oh" and looked at her. She turned back and looked at him. This felt completely new to Arjun, but at his age, he couldn't quite grasp the feeling. Aditi blushed. Just then, Vasu interrupted their moment by asking, "What about the evening party?" Arjun gave him a look, as if to say, "You're such a disturbance."

The scene changed to a park, like a zoo. Arjun’s parents and all the children were there, having a lot of fun, running, and playing happily. They explored and looked at the animals nearby, and everyone was shocked to see a very tall giraffe.
Even though everyone was having a good time, Arjun was a little sad because Aditi hadn't come. Aditi's friend, Yamuna, came up to him and gave him a gift from Aditi. Arjun was a little surprised. Just then, Vasu ran up to them. "What's going on here? Oh, a gift! What about one for me?" he asked.
Yamuna replied to Vasu, "It's not your birthday today. This is only for Arjun."
Vasu insisted, "But I want a gift too!"
Ignoring Vasu, Yamuna told Arjun, "Aditi said you should open this when you are alone." Arjun wondered why she wanted him to open it alone—was it a special gift? Vasu's curiosity shot up. "I have to know what's inside!"
Yamuna said, "It's up to you now; Aditi just told me to tell you to see it alone. I've done my part," and she walked away. Arjun thought that since Aditi gave it to him to see alone, he should respect her wish. But Vasu was so curious he kept staring at the gift.
Arjun told Vasu, "Hey, why don't you go play with the others? I need to open this gift and see." Vasu, still looking at the gift, said, "No, I want to see what's inside!"
Arjun insisted, "Vasu, Yamuna said to see it alone. Go play with them!" Vasu replied, "No, this is the most interesting thing now. I must see what's inside." Arjun said, "Fine, you stay here, I'll go somewhere else to see it." Vasu said, "I'm coming with you." Vasu followed Arjun everywhere, which started to irritate Arjun. "Vasu, could you please stop following me for a bit?" Vasu said, "Only if you promise to give me one if there are a lot of chocolates inside. Okay?" Arjun sighed. "I promise, if there is a chocolate in there, I'll give you one."
Vasu finally walked away. Arjun took Aditi's instruction very seriously. He noticed the zoo visitors nearby, so he decided to find a quieter spot. He walked over to a nearby mango tree where there were fewer people. As Arjun unwrapped the gift, his curiosity grew, but when he fully opened it, he was confused and disappointed. "This is what she wanted me to open alone?" Inside was just an invitation card. Like Vasu, he had hoped for a big chocolate, but there was none.
Disappointed, he walked back to where everyone was playing. Vasu saw Arjun returning and asked, "Did you open it? Was there chocolate?" Arjun, with a confused and disappointed face, replied, "No, there was just a card inside."
Vasu insisted, "What? Tell me the truth. Did you eat it all and are just lying to me?" Arjun said, "Seriously, there's no chocolate. Here, look," and he showed him the card. Vasu looked at it and thought, "Oh no, this is in English, and I can't read it properly." Hiding his thought, he told Arjun, "Hmm, okay, I'll let you off this time. I forgive you. Now go!"
Arjun wondered, "What's wrong with him now? Why is he acting so strange?" Vasu was very weak in his studies and couldn't read English well.
Arjun looked at the invitation card in his hand. Arjun could read it and understood that Aditi was inviting him to her house for a birthday surprise. Now, Arjun had to decide whether to go to the private party Aditi had arranged just for him.
It was 6:00 PM, and everyone had to leave. The park party was over. Some children were picked up by their parents, and Arjun's parents dropped the rest home in their car. After dropping everyone off, Arjun's parents left Arjun at Aditi's house, saying, "Let us know when your party is over, and we'll come back." Aditi's mother welcomed Arjun inside and told him Aditi was waiting for him upstairs.
Arjun went up the stairs to an open space with a small penthouse. On the door, it read: "Enter for the Magic Show." This made Arjun excited. He opened the door and went inside. It was completely dark. Arjun called out Aditi's name. The darkness made him a little scared. "Aditi, where are you? I'm scared. Please tell me where you are!" Suddenly, a spotlight turned on a little distance away. Arjun watched in shock. Slowly, Aditi walked into the light and announced, "Welcome to my magic! Today's magic show is very special, and a very special guest has come. That is Arjun!"
"Yay!" clapped Aditi's mother and father, who were standing behind Arjun. Aditi's parents were encouraging their daughter, and she performed with great excitement. Aditi continued her performance, saying, "Now, the card magic that everyone knows," and took a pack of cards to shuffle. She shuffled them clumsily because she was a little nervous. She usually only performed for her parents or her best friend, Yamuna. This was the first time for Arjun, and since she liked him so much, she wanted the magic show to be perfect, and the fear of making a mistake made her more tense. Because of the tension, she dropped all the cards on the floor. Arjun didn't understand what was happening and wondered if this was part of the act since he was only 8 and this was his first magic show.
Aditi looked at her parents' faces when Arjun didn't react. Her parents gestured, "It's okay, continue, continue," which motivated her to keep going. Aditi took a magic wand from the table next to her, chanted a spell, and tried to change it into a bouquet of flowers or something else, but there was no change in the stick. Trying again, the stick slipped from her hand. Aditi was embarrassed by another failure. Next, she took a magic hat next to her, put a cloth over it, chanted a spell, and expected a magic rabbit or a pigeon to appear. Instead, a mouse appeared! She screamed loudly in fear. Arjun laughed out loud. "What is this? A magic show or a comedy show? It's so good!"
Aditi felt deeply embarrassed. She sat down on the floor, sad, and on the verge of crying. Arjun still couldn't stop. "Is this also a part of the magic show?" he asked sarcastically. Aditi's parents felt bad watching her.
As Aditi sat there sadly, feeling like she had ruined the whole party, her father, wearing a black cloth over his clothes, spoke from her left side. "Ha ha ha, my curse worked very well!"
Aditi said, "What?"
Aditi's father replied, "Yes, I am the reason your powers are not working. My curse made your powers fail!"
Aditi asked, "When did you curse me?"
Aditi's father stuttered and said, "Uh, um, well, when you ate the chocolate and lied that you hadn't."
Aditi countered, "I didn't eat it!"
Aditi's father, faking confidence, said, "See, you're lying again! You also ate a biscuit! And you threw vegetables in the dustbin without eating them. That is the biggest mistake of all!"
Aditi whined, "But I don't like vegetables!"
Aditi's father explained, "That's why your powers aren't working, because vegetables are what give our body strength."
Arjun was completely drawn into the scene and found it all very interesting.
Aditi's mother, wearing a white cloth, came from the right side and said, "If you want your powers back, you have to say sorry for what you did, and you must not throw away vegetables again—you must eat them! And you must not eat chocolates without telling me. If you agree to these things, your powers will return."
Aditi felt a little guilty. She turned to her father and said, "Sorry! I won't eat chocolates without permission again, and I will eat vegetables. I promise to listen to you."
Aditi's father felt pity for her because she looked so innocent as she apologized. He said, "It's okay to eat them one or two times."
Aditi turned to her mother and asked, "Can I do magic with my powers now?"
Aditi's mother told her, "For your magic to work, you need to trust yourself first. Relax and try again. We are here with you, okay?"
Motivated by her mother's words, Aditi tried again with newfound confidence. This time, she confidently shuffled the cards, performed the card trick by asking Arjun to pick a card, and made her magic stick disappear, turning it into a flower. She pulled a rabbit from the hat, and the flowers she held suddenly turned into butterflies. She even gently floated up into the air (with the help of her father, whose black cloth made him invisible in the darkness). Aditi's magic show was a wonderful surprise for Arjun.
The magic show and the fun time were over. It was time for Arjun to go home. His parents came to pick him up. Arjun's parents told him, "Say thank you to Aditi and her parents."
Arjun said, "Thank you, Aunty. Thank you, Uncle, and thank you, Aditi. I really loved the magic. This was a great experience. Thank you so much, Aditi!"
Aditi said, "Thank you for coming and watching my magic show. This is a memorable day for me. I will never forget it."
Arjun asked, "Then I'll come to watch again and again! You should perform in front of everyone, too, okay?"
Aditi replied, "Oh, no, I'm too scared!"
Arjun encouraged her, "Why are you scared? I'll be there to clap for you, and you did a great job! And from now on, we are friends," and he extended his hand for a handshake.
Aditi was so happy and emotional from Arjun's words, which felt especially meaningful because her parents had always supported her, and now he was doing it too. She immediately hugged him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Arjun was surprised, and both sets of parents watching them smiled affectionately, thinking, "They're just kids."
They both said goodbye to each other. The next morning in class, Arjun said "Hi" and extended his hand for a handshake. As Aditi shook his hand, she subtly made the wristwatch on his hand disappear. Arjun walked away without noticing his missing watch, but suddenly he realized it was gone. "My watch! Where's my watch?... Aditi!" This was Aditi's mischief. Now, they would continue to play pranks like this and enjoy their school life together.

The birthday ends, and the magic continues...
