As the snowstorm rages on, there’s a humbling house. It seems as if it’s made from wooden logs. The chimney was pouring smoke, the windows were lit with an orange light emanating from it. Something was off, the sound of glass breaking and people yelling. A small kid was thrown out of the window as he landed he turned back and his house was lit ablaze…
An alarm clock was blaring its noise as a hand reached out under the covers of a messy bed. As the kid woke up we caught a glimpse of his room. It was a flurry of clothes, mostly t-shirts, pants, and the occasional underwear. He didn’t seem to have any electronic appliances, besides the clock, there was a phone charging. He sat up at the side of his bed, he was turning 16 around that time, and his body was scrawny, he didn’t have bulging muscles but they were noticeable. He had wavy hair but it was short on his sides. As for his face, he had rough edges, a sharp jaw, and nose, but the most noticeable thing about him was his eyes. They were still closed. His name was Luke, no last name was ever found for him. He got up and left his room to go to the bathroom. Even though he hadn’t opened his eyes he seemed to have no trouble getting around and picking things up. As he was beginning to brush his teeth he paused and faced up.
“I know you’re there,” he said in a calm low voice
Behind him was a small African-American girl roughly around nine years old, wearing bright pink pajamas with “cute” unicorns in the front. She had long nappy hair, her eyes were a light brown. She had a missing tooth that fell three weeks before that.
“Aww, how did you know you never open your eyes!” said the small girl with a frilly voice
“Every time you take a step the floorboards it creaks”
“How come I can’t hear that?” she asked while stepping on the floorboard
“Ellie… you can’t keep your mouth closed for more than five seconds”
“That’s too mean!”
He continued his business after kicking Ellie out of the bathroom. While he didn’t like lying to his sister, the truth was a lot more unsettling than what he had said. The truth was he could hear muscle stretching when he was the focus, let alone while he wasn’t as focused he could hear breathing without trying. The teen was not blind but he preferred to keep his eyes closed, after all, they were something he didn’t exactly like showing. He finished up and let Ellie use the bathroom, he walked downstairs. Peeking a little bit, he passed a window and saw it was the crack of dawn as the blue sky was starting to appear. He smelled what was cooking it seemed like bacon and eggs.
“So, sleeping beauty can wake up on his own, that’s surprising, it must be a freezing day in hell, isn’t it?” said a woman in her early thirties
Her name was Annabelle, even though she preferred Anna. She had nappy hair too but it seemed to have been brushed and put into a puffy ponytail. She had the same eyes as Ellie and she was wearing casual wear. She had the same smooth skin as her daughter with the occasional wrinkle here and there. She wouldn’t have wanted to mention that.
“Unlike before I actually have things to do now” he responded a bit annoyed
“So, does that mean you could’ve to wake up whenever you wanted,” Anna said starting to glare at him.
“Breakfast smells delicious as always!” he says changing the topic nervously
“Mhmm, just eat your food and get to the bus”
He did as he was told and finished his breakfast in mere minutes. He then grabbed a black hoodie, this hoodie was special to him. It had two white strings on the hood and the zipper was also white. The rest of the hoodie was black, he grabbed a beanie as well. It wasn’t snowing hard but the cold season was ending and it was still cold. He headed down the street, as he breathed the air turned foggy. He continued as normal, he started thinking about the dream he had wondering what had happened. He knew it was real but he didn’t know what had caused the explosion. Even to this day, he wondered from time to time, yet he was too scared to ever try and find out the answer.
“LUKE!” a disembodied voice snapped Luke back out of his trance.
He looked around and found the source of this voice. It belonged to his long-time friend Jesse, or Jay for short. She was 15, she had brown hair and a bit pale, she was wearing a gray parka with black, thick pants with shoes to match. She also was wearing a beanie and a blue knit scarf. Of course, Luke snuck a peek to know who had called him. After identifying her he closed his eyes. She joined him walking and then started talking.
“Open your eyes, you can trust me,” she said smiling
“Yeah, I can, but no” he responded, “It's more for other people than it is for me”
“Please! Are they so beautiful that capture the attention of many if not all?!” as she said that her eyes lit up and reached for his face “LET ME SEE!”
Luke quickly blocked her nonchalantly.
“Hell no… also captures the attention of many if not all?” he asked
“You’re so mysterious,” she said, “I didn’t even know you were an orphan until a few months ago”
“I keep to myself, why do you think I never ask about your life”
“Oh, come on you know almost everything there is about me”
“My statement stands”
“What do you- oh you’re an asshole”
Luke gives a soft smirk, as they started to arrive at their school. There were several different groups of students. Most of them were diverse and mostly categorizable. There were the clichés like the jocks, the nerds, and of course the popular. Luke and Jesse continued their way before getting some nasty grimaces from the popular clique. One girl stood out, smirking. She had red dyed hair with orange highlights, she was pretty and taller than Jesse. Her eyes were a bright brown color. Her name was Destiny, the most popular brat you’ll ever meet.
“So, if it isn’t the want to be lady and the tramp,” she said
“Oh, I thought you were the evil step mother’s favorite daughter,” Jesse said shocked
“I wish I actually cared enough to tell you to fuck off but quite frankly everything you say and do is just pathetic” Luke interrupted in a tired monotone voice “come on Jay before you catch bitch syndrome”
Destiny gave him a grimace, and then smirked and walked away giggling with her hyena posse right beside her. If it wasn’t obvious enough, our duo and she don’t mix well.
“Let’s get to class before we get in trouble again,” Luke said pulling Jay along with him
Skipping a couple hours into the day, Luke sitting next to the window, slightly opened his eyes and glanced down to see some students walking. Amongst them was Jessie, who looked up and flipped him off. He smiled and looked towards the distance, and he saw it. A purple glowing orb falling the same way a nuke would. He stood up quickly with his eyes completely open. Everyone looked out the window and saw it. Everyone started screaming, all Luke could do was look down at her, everything was quiet to him. He wanted to open the window, to jump down, do something he wanted to help her. She looked away from him looking at the orb falling. He ran as fast as he could. He headed towards the outside and he opened the doors leading out. The orb was nowhere in sight, Jay was around 25 feet from him. He felt it, something of an earthquake. Everything was shaking, he kept going. Looking up was some sort of purple cloud spreading out, spreading through the town. Before he could make it to her it enveloped them. It was dark, he could barely see, he couldn’t see Jessie.
“JESSIE!” He screamed
After he had screamed the purple cloud pulled him back a bit and it dissipated. Moving on to who knows where. He looked around and saw her on the floor. He quickly bent down and picked up.
“Jessie… please talk to me” he said, she didn’t speak but he thought he heard somebody speak
“Now, things should get interesting…” the disembodied voice said
He looked around and nobody but startled students were circling around. He picked Jessie up and headed towards to the nurse’s office. He ran… and ran… and ran…
