As the morning daylight peeked through the curtains and into her room, Elena sat up in her be. One glance at the digital clock on her nightstand made her groan. This was it, the first day of her last year of school.
For a second, she wondered if she should just go back to sleep for the rest of the day. It was her last year, so no one would really care. But then again, it was her last year. She should try to enjoy the first day of school for the first time, seeing as, in the past, her first days hadn't amazing.
She lifted up her blankets to look for her cellphone, finding it near her foot. She reached for and unlocked it using her fingerprint. Several notifications showed in her messaging app and she opened it.
All of the messages were from her best friend.
Good morning!
How are you doing this morning?
See you at the school entrance at 7?
Nevermind, I think I'll just sleep for a little longer.
Hey, when was Jane's birthday again?
Also, I can't wait to show you the bracelet that I made last night!
Btw, I forgot my lotion at your place the other day. Can you bring it with you?
Oh, and don't forget to bring the uniform for gym class!!!
She nodded as she scrolled through the messages. With a small sigh, she started typing.
Jane's birthday was on June 3rd. I'll bring you the lotion, but stop forgetting things at my place.
Elena set the phone on her nightstand and went to her closet immediately. She pulled out her outfit for the day, which she had hung on the closet door the night before. She took a quick shower and then changed.
A simple black t-shirt with a yellow smiley face on her left sleeve, a pair of blue mom jeans, and a pair of white tennis shoes. She then accessorized by put on a pair of silver stud earrings in the shape of a heart. She added on the BFF bracelet her best friend had given her years ago.
"Honey, come down for breakfast!"
"Going, mom!" Elena picked up her bookbag from the chair near her bed and walked downstairs to the kitchen. Her mother's warm smile welcomed her to the kitchen.
"Good morning, love."
"Good morning mom. Do you need me to set the table?"
"I would really appreciate it."

"Elena! Elena! Good morning!" Elena closed the door of her mother's car shut and waved at her through the window before turning to her best friend.
"Good morning, my sweet little Dani! I brought your lotion. Let's go inside before we're late." The girls walked into the school, headed directly to their first class of the day.
The girls searched for seats two seats that were next to each other, or at least close enough that they could talk. Fortunately for them, they found that the row at the very back of the classroom was pretty mush empty. They chose two seats near the windows and put their bags under the table. Before doing so, Elena took out the lotion.
"Here, but stop leaving things at my house or next time I'll keep them." It was obviously a lie, but Dani made a mental note to keep all of her things in her bag and triple check next time she went to Elena's house.
The girls started chatting about how excited they were that it was their last year, what a boy in their class stood up from the front row and walked towards them. Without a second glance, he took the seat next to Dani took out a brown notebook and a fountain pen.
"By the way," Elena paused for a second before continuing her sentence. She already felt sad as she started to form the next words, "have you, spoken to her? Has she... called you or anything?"
Dani shook her head slowly. "No, and she isn't answering my messages either. Maybe she needs time to settle in, she'll get back to us soon."
Elena nodded, "Yeah. Yeah, I guess."
Elena's mind wandered off while Dani turned to the boy beside her. "Your name is Theo, right?"
The boy looked from whatever he was writing and smiled at her. "Yeah, and your name is Dani."
"Ooh, you know my name?' Theo nodded. "What are you writing about?"
Theo looked down at the page filled with ink and shook his head slightly. "Nothing, really. I just... got inspired. I guess."
"By the way, I heard that you won the school's writing award last year, too. You should teach me how to write like you."
