Her heart is beating like crazy against her chest as she opens the heavy metall door.
After this there's nowhere she can run to, no matter how much she wants to.
If only she had done as she was told none of this would've happened, but she just couldn't do it, not to him. Not after everything she has already done.
She closes the heavy door and frantically goes through all the drawers, but she just can't remember where she put it. She was never good at remembering things in situations like this.
"It's in the one above", a quiet voice says from the small cell in the corner of the room.
Without turning around she quickly opens the drawer and pulls out a syringe and a bottle full of some black liquid. She fills up the syringe and with her heart hammering against her chest she slowly inserts the syringe in her right arm.
Gasping for air she slowly pulls out the empty syringe and throws it onto the many notebooks on the metall desk.
Her stomach feels like it's turning inside out and the blood in her veins is so hot that it feels like she's burning from the inside, but she pulls through. This is her only chance to escape from his grasp.
"Let's go", she says pulling out a pair of keys opening the cage in the corner.
Slowly a person with a small build emerges from the shadows.
His hair is dirty and unkempt, his clothes are way too big for him, since he's basically just skin and bones. But under all that dirt his snow white skin and his big black eyes are shining through.
If you could choose a single word to describe him it would be ethereal, even under these dire circumstances.
"Where are we going?", he asks pulling away frightened, as she tries to take his hand.
"Far away from here, somewhere where no one can find us. How does that sound?", she says carefully kneeling down in front of him.
"Like a lie, why are you lying?", he questions her, suspicious of the sudden turn of events.
"It's not like that, it's just... I don't know if some place like that exists, but as long as it does somewhere in this world, I'll take you to it, no matter the cost. I promise."
"Fine, but you have to promise that you won't just disappear like mom, if you don't I'll tell them everything", he says looking at her with his big eyes, at times like these he looks just like an innocent little puppy. But that only makes her feel worse about what she has done.
"I promise, now let's go. We don't have much time", before even finishing her sentence she picks him up and opens the bottle full of oil she keeps in the closet in case she needs it for one of the experiments.
She pours the whole bottle on top of all her notes and hypotheses on what determines the success of the experiment as well as how it works and what is needed for it.
From the lighter in her hand a small flame emerges and she breathes in the stuffy air in her laboratory one last time before dropping the lighter in the oil setting the whole room ablaze.
After that she does the only thing she can think of she runs with the little boy in her arm as fast as her body's able to.
The steps of the guards growing louder behind her with every second.
Finally they reach the end of the hall a big window in front of them. Looking back one last time she opens the window and jumps down protecting the boy to the best of her ability, leaving behind the soldiers who were only a few steps behind them at the time they jumped.
One of them looks down panicked, but it's too dark to see anything. The only sound in the pressing silence is the river that runs by seven meters below the window.
Everyone present knows that they've messed up far beyond their imagination, now nothing can save them from his wrath.
And just as expected a few hours later excruciating screams echo through the whole mansion as they recieve their punishment for their failure. Only two of the eleven guards that were there when it happened left the mansion on their own two feet.
A few weeks later, after their successfull escape, both the girl and the boy are sitting on the cold street holding each other in an attempt to keep themselves warm.
It's a cold day even when the sun is shining down on them ever so brightly, almost as if it's laughing at them for foolishly thinking that everything would turn out for the better after leaving.
The boy's breathing is starting to grow weaker and faster with every second that passes and his fingers and lips have already turned blue.
If this continues they won't last another day out on the streets, but it's not like they can just go to a hospital. He made sure that every hospital was tightly controlled, knowing that the boy isn't able to keep on going with these temperatures, if they made it out alive of the mansion that is.
Just as she's about to lose all hope a woman approaches them, holding out her hand.
The woman in front of them looks like she's in her sixties, she is a bit smaller than the girl and her open hair is falling down in grayish white curls. The smell of fresh coffee was coming from her and her hand looks rough, like she spent many years on a farm or doing other physical labors.
The girl's suspicious, no one in their right mind would just randomly help out some dirty kids on the streets, so why is she holding out her hand, like she's waiting for her to take it?
"What's your name, dear?", the woman asks warmly.
"Marianne", she says after evaluating the situation.
"That's a good name. Would you and your little brother like to come inside and warm yourselves up a bit?"
"We're good", Marianne says, holding the boy tighter as he begins coughing.
"Don't worry I'm not planning anything", the woman chuckles.
"You see that coffee shop across the street? It belongs to me, I've seen you sitting here for the past few days and it looks like you might need a hand. There's nothing to be afraid of at this time the shop is filled with customers so you can be sure that no one will do anything to you."
Marianne looks at her the distrust very apparent on her face.
"Would you just relax a bit? I told you I wouldn't do anything, I am a woman of my word. Besides I'm not dumb enough to leave witnesses if I truly were to do something."
"How reassuring", she snorts, but still takes the woman's hand.
Maybe she would finally be able to live a normal live no matter how small the opportunity was she wanted to seize it, not knowing if she would have such luck again.
Besides if she truly is to get revenge like she's planning, she needs to stay alive, even if it's just for a little bit longer.
After years of being isolated from everyone Silas finally escapes. But now that he's free he doesn't know what to do and his pursuers are starting to close in. Will he be able to fully escape or will he lose everything while trying, even his own life?
"Who are you?", asks the confused and scared voice.
The dark being in front of him smiles at him with that horrendous smile, that he despises more than anything else.
"Can't you see it? I am you."
