The velvet obsession

Chapter 1: The Incandescence

Chapter 1: The Incandescence

Nov 18, 2025

The heart of ‘ATELIER AXA’ was silence, broken only by the sharp, rhythmic snip of steel shears. For Alexis, twenty-three and architect of her own textile kingdom, silence was the necessary condition for creation. Her world was cream linen, bolts of iridescent silk, and the faint, beautiful tang of starch and pressed wool.

She was bent over a drafting table, a pencil tucked behind her ear, sketching the fall of a bias-cut velvet gown—a study in shadow and light—when the front door chimed.

It wasn't a jarring sound, but a polite, crystalline note that cut through the low hum of the air conditioning. Alexis frowned slightly. Noon appointments were rare; she preferred the solitude of the morning.

She straightened, stretching the tension from her neck, and walked out of the back studio and into the sun-drenched showroom.

And then, the air shifted.

The showroom had always been designed to showcase her work, but suddenly, the meticulously arranged mannequins and the perfectly draped fabrics felt like supporting cast to the woman standing beneath the skylight.

She was, quite simply, stunning.

Not in the gaudy, attention-seeking way of a celebrity, but in the quiet, absolute confidence of a creature perfectly balanced. She wore a tailored charcoal suit—sharp angles that spoke of bespoke precision—and her hair, the color of rich mahogany, was pulled back severely, highlighting the elegant slope of her neck and the fierce intelligence in her high cheekbones.

Her eyes, when they met Alexis’s, were the color of moss after a storm: deep, complex, and unsettlingly direct.

“Alexis?” the woman asked. Her voice was low, resonant, like cello strings vibrating in a closed room.

Alexis realized she hadn't moved. She was standing frozen on the threshold, a pencil still gripped behind her ear like a teenager. She felt a heat rush up her sternum and lodge in her throat, a physical reaction so immediate and intense it bordered on panic. This wasn’t just attraction; it was a sudden, violent recognition—a soul slamming violently into its counterpart.

“Yes,” Alexis managed, her professional veneer clinging to her voice by a thread. “I’m Alexis. Can I help you?”

The woman offered a small, knowing smile. It didn't reach her eyes, but it softened the severe lines of her mouth.

“I certainly hope so,” she said, stepping forward. “My name is Clara. I’m told you are the only person in this city capable of making exactly what I need.”

Alexis swallowed, trying to focus on the word ‘need’ and not the way Clara moved—a smooth, unhurried glide that suggested infinite leisure and absolute authority.

“And what is it you need, Clara?”

“A dress,” Clara replied, moving towards a display of raw silk bolts, her fingers trailing lightly over the fabric. “Not just any dress. An event dress. Something that demands silence when I enter a room, and leaves echoes when I depart.”

Alexis felt a professional thrill—this woman understood the language of drama and textiles. But beneath that thrill was a different, far more primal thrumming. She needed to touch the fabric Clara had touched. She needed to be closer.

“That sounds like a challenge I’d welcome,” Alexis said, leading her to the consultation area—a deep chaise lounge and a glass table. “Tell me about the event. The atmosphere, the colors, the intention.”

Clara settled onto the chaise with the grace of a leopard finding the sun. She crossed one leg over the other, and Alexis caught a flash of expensive leather shoe and perfectly flat ankle.

“The intention,” Clara repeated, looking directly into Alexis’s eyes, holding the gaze just long enough to make Alexis’s pulse stutter. “The intention, Alexis, is to be utterly unforgettable. It’s a private affair. Black tie, but daring. The theme is ‘Moonlight and Midas.’”

Alexis picked up her sketch pad, her hand steadier now that she had a task, a focus point. “Gold and deep night. Perhaps a midnight blue velvet? Or a heavy silk satin, cut so it flows like liquid?”

“Liquid,” Clara murmured, leaning forward. The scent of her perfume—something complex, perhaps sandalwood and smoke—wafted over the table. “I like that. Liquid. But I want the liquid to cling.”

Alexis’s breathing hitched. Cling.

“Then we must consider the cut meticulously,” Alexis said, her voice now dangerously low, focused only on the geometry of the desire blooming between them. “For a true drape, I prefer to work directly with the body. We need precise measurements. Skin is a better canvas than paper.”

Clara’s lips curved into that small, predatory smile again. “I expected nothing less from a true artist.”

The measuring process was a holy ritual in Alexis’s atelier, always clinical, always precise. Today, it was an explicit act of intimacy, thinly veiled by metric tape and notation.

Alexis retrieved her tools, her hands shaking slightly. Clara rose, peeling off the charcoal jacket, revealing a pristine white silk blouse and the elegant curve of her shoulders beneath the sheer fabric.

“Ready,” Clara said simply.

Alexis approached, the soft fiber measuring tape cool in her hands. She started at the shoulder—a necessary, neutral point.

“Shoulder to shoulder span,” Alexis whispered, leaning in, her breath momentarily caught in the proximity of Clara’s ear. The skin there was flawless, soft.

Clara stood perfectly still, a marble statue brought to sudden consciousness. She smelled incredible, expensive. Not just the perfume, but the underlying scent of warm skin and fresh laundry.

Alexis moved down, noting the bust measurement—her fingers brushing lightly against the delicate fabric covering Clara’s chest. Every nerve ending in Alexis’s hand flared to life. She could feel the subtle rise and fall of Clara’s breathing, measured and slow.

“I need to check the waist, true waistline,” Alexis murmured, needing to refocus on the task.

She reached around Clara’s back, the backs of her hands gliding over the silk blouse. For a necessary few seconds, Alexis’s body was pressed against Clara’s back. The shock of contact—the simple warmth and density of Clara’s form—sent an electric pulse straight down Alexis’s spine.

Clara let out the quietest, most infinitesimal sigh.

“Do you know what color you want the lining to be?” Clara asked, her voice steady despite the proximity.

Alexis closed her eyes briefly, trying to regain control. “The lining is the secret of the dress. It’s for the wearer alone. It should be… rich. A contrast to the moonlight. Something dark. Obsessive.”

Clara tilted her head slightly, her breath warm against Alexis’s ear. “I agree. Obsession is underrated.”

Alexis pulled back suddenly, needing space, needing oxygen. She took the final measurement, the length from waist to floor, kneeling briefly at Clara’s feet. When she looked up, Clara’s gaze was fixed entirely on her—unblinking, possessive.

The sheer, overwhelming force of that look made Alexis stumble back onto her heel.

“I have everything I need,” Alexis said, her heart hammering against her ribs. “The dimensions are perfect. I’ll draft the schematics tonight. I’ll call you when I have the initial sketches and fabric samples ready.”

She felt an absurd panic at the thought of Clara leaving.

Clara picked up her jacket, slowly, deliberately. She didn’t hurry. She walked back towards the door, then paused, turning back to face Alexis, who stood motionless behind the glass table.

“Alexis,” Clara said, pronouncing her name like a promise. “Don’t rush this. I need this gown to be flawless. And frankly, the fittings are something I am now very much looking forward to.”

She didn’t wait for a response. Clara simply smiled—a slow, sensual unfolding that finally reached those green, mossy eyes—and disappeared, leaving behind only the lingering scent of sandalwood and the profound, echoing silence of the atelier.

Alexis leaned against the drafting table, gripping the edge until her knuckles were white. The measuring tape still hung from her fingers, limp and useless now.

She was in love. Or perhaps, she was already obsessed. And she knew, with terrifying certainty, that this custom dress was the least of what Clara was asking her to create. The dress was merely the velvet cage, and Alexis had just volunteered to be the captive.
