Darkness
A cold, wet stillness settled over the cavern. The air was thick-damp with the scent of decayed carcasses and laced with the distant drip of unseen moisture striking jagged stone. Shadows crept into various crevices, stretching and shifting as something unseen was stirring within the abyss.
The chittering of insects echoed through the hollow chambers, their tiny legs skittering over the damp rocks. Lizards stuck to the cavern walls, their unblinking eyes reflecting the faintest glimmers of glowing fungi. The stillness, however, was deceptive. Something else had awakened. Something new.
A faint tremor ran through the earth—a deep, primal disturbance, as if the cave itself had recognized the birth of a new, unnatural force. Loose dirt tumbled from the ceiling, and unseen creatures scurried into the darkness, driven by an instinct older than understanding.
Beneath the surface, it twitched. Its carapace hardened as its form solidified, cold and unyielding. The void pulsed within its mandibles, hunger stirring before thought could even take shape. This place... this hollow expanse of the world... was its own domain now.
The Abyssus Scarabothis had awakened.

Hunger

Its mandibles, jagged, sharp, and laced with the essence of the void, quivered with anticipation. They were made for one purpose: rending flesh from the bone, tearing flesh apart, sinking into the warm, struggling bodies of the living.
It did not care what. Who. Where. Only that it must feed.
The cavern trembled as it moved—a deep, guttural chitter reverberating through the hollow expanse. But there was no hesitation now. The creature lunged.
The Fight Continues
The horned toad did not relent. Its spined tongue shot out again—a whip of barbed flesh slicing through the air. The creature twisted, its legs skittering over loose stone as it barely avoided another direct hit. The toad's tongue slammed into the cave floor, embedding its spikes deep into the dirt before recoiling with a wet snap.
The creature lunged, its void-laced mandibles clamping down—this time, it found flesh. A thin, vulnerable patch just beneath the toad's thick throat. The armored beast hissed, its entire body lurching as the predator tore away a piece of soft meat.
But the victory was short-lived. The toad lashed out, one powerful limb slamming against the creature's side, sending it sprawling across the cavern floor.

Neither could afford to retreat. This was a battle of attrition.
The creature circled, its legs moving in rapid, unpredictable patterns, forcing the toad to stay on guard. The toad adjusted its stance, coiling its body low, ready to strike at any moment.
Then, in a blur—both moved. Mandibles snapped. Fangs clashed against hardened scales. The toad's tongue lashed out, grazing the creature's shell, sending splinters of exoskeleton flying. Simultaneously, the creature's mandibles dug deeper, piercing another small gap in the toad's armor.
They ripped into each other.
The toad slammed its heavy body downward, crushing part of the creature's leg beneath its weight—a sharp crack echoed through the cave. The creature screeched, twisting violently, tearing a fresh gash into the toad's exposed side.
Blood and shattered exoskeleton littered the cavern floor. Both predators were failing.
One of them had to end this.
The creature knew it could not last much longer. Its body trembled, the adaptive exoskeleton struggling to repair so many fractures at once. It had to finish it now.
With a sudden burst of movement, it burrowed.
The toad recoiled, watching warily as the earth beneath it shifted. Its heavy frame made it slow—it couldn't move fast enough.
The cave floor erupted. The creature shot upward from the depths, sinking its mandibles directly into the toad's throat.
The toad bucked wildly, its body thrashing as it tried desperately to shake the creature loose. Its tongue lashed weakly in one final attempt at retaliation—but it was too late.
The creature ripped through its windpipe. The toad gurgled, its movements slowing as blood poured from the open wound. Then, it collapsed.
