Nico
“You look stunning.” My mother Wynter said, tucking my braid over my shoulder. “You remind me so much of myself at your age.”
I grinned at my mom, and he helped me place the ornate crown atop my head. “Thank you.” I bowed my head, letting a blush settle on my cheeks.
“Always, baby, “ He patted my shoulders, and his eyes shone in the light. “Are you excited about the ball and possibly meeting your betrothed?”
I shrugged my shoulders, not knowing what would happen. “Honestly, I’m more excited about the announcement of me being the crown prince.” I grinned at my mom.
“I’m so proud of your dad doing this. You’ll be the first omega ruler in the world.” My mom pulled me in for a hug. When he pulled away, he cupped my chin in his hand.
There was a knock on my door, and my dad’s voice sounded behind the oak door. “Everyone decent?” He asked. “All invited guests are here.”
My mom looked me in the eyes, asking if I was ready, and I nodded my head in response. “As ready as I can be.”
“You’ll be fine, baby. Everyone will love you.” My mom replied. “Hell, you’ve been ready for this since you were five, sitting with your dad while he did his work.”
We hugged one last time, and we met with my dad and my three younger alpha brothers in the foyer. All three of the teenage boys looked like they’d rather be playing their games and would rather be shoveling horse manure than about to attend a ball.
“You look lovely, Nico.” My dad smiled. He had aged within the last two years. His eyes had crow’s feet, and his face had distinct wrinkles from all of his concentration. His hair had streaks of white beginning at his temples, and his thick curls were neatly slicked back to make himself look presentable.
“Thank you, dad.” He opened his arms for a hug. I ran into his embrace and tucked my head under his chin.
“Of course,” My dad, Elias, kissed my forehead. “Are you ready?” He asked.
I nodded, taking a deep breath. We walked to the top of the staircase leading to the ballroom. I could hear the gentle roar of the people down below, and my palms got sweaty with anticipation.
The presenter smiled at the six of us, and he announced our arrival. Everyone’s attention focused on the top of the staircase. My parents looped their arms with mine, and we descended the stairs together.
The suit I wore was bright white with an intricate design on it. I wore the country’s colors on my tie and a cape that drug behind me to signify the importance of myself in this ball. Being named the crown prince of the Devonshire kingdom was the highest honor I could hold as an omega.
The orchestra began to play music when we got to the bottom of the staircase. Royalty alike began dancing amongst each other. A few alphas approached me, asking my dad for the honor of dancing with me. Both of my parents kissed my temples and sent me out to the wolves.
The first person to dance with me was a younger alpha than myself. From what I guessed, he was probably 18 or 19, and he kept fumbling over his feet to dance with me. At the end of the song, I gave Henry or was it Hank, a gentle smile, and I was whisked away by another Alpha.
One thing I hated the most about balls, and being the star of the show, was that I had to dance with all eligible royals and other commoner Alpha’s that attended.
Which, it seemed like most of them didn’t know how to do a classic dance that we would typically be taught during our dance classes. Or, well, we were supposed to. After the seventh alpha I had danced with, it was obvious that they showed up for the class, but they hadn’t bothered even to learn how to dance.
My feet felt like a pack of elephants had stomped on them, and I desperately tried to break away, even if it was just for a few moments.
When I had finally managed to break away, I slipped out of the ballroom and into the gardens. Only a few pairs of alpha’s, omega’s, and betas were in the courtyard, sitting down on the benches, talking amongst themselves.
I took a deep breath of the crisp December air, letting myself relax in the moonlight. The Christmas lights twinkled in the fountain that had frozen over in the cool temperature. Snow blanketed the ground, and it felt silent, peaceful, and beautiful.
Winter was my favorite season, the way my mom would decorate the palace in almost every room besides my dad's office. He loved the holiday as well, but he knew it drove my mom mad that he couldn’t touch his office. Then, out of spite, my mom would add a decoration a day inside the stuffy office until he would notice.
It was sweet watching my parents be so loving toward one another, and it made me crave what they had. And I knew that I might find my true mate, but I also knew that it was still a slim chance. My parents did all that they could to make it possible for everyone, the rich, poor, royal, and commoners, to find their mate. Holding celebratory balls, people would travel far and wide to attend them. Because finding your true mate was the ultimate goal for all.
One of the servants walked around the gardens holding a tray of food. Asking each individual if they would like something off of the tray.
I sat down on one of the benches that had been cleared of the snow. I wrapped my thick cape around myself, folding myself into a cocoon to keep myself warm. I knew I would have to go back to the ballroom to continue introducing myself to everyone. But sitting in the calm silence seemed to be just what I needed.
“Prince Nicolas,” Someone’s voice chimed out from the doorway. I widened my eyes, not wanting to go back in there just yet. I got up from my seat and went into the maze, hoping to keep whoever wanted me to go back into the chaos at bay.
I heard them call my name once more. I ignored it, continuing to hide in the maze. When I neared the center, I noticed that I wasn’t the only one hiding out in the maze. I could hear someone’s voice.
“Prince Nicolas, it's time to make the announcement.” I could hear my uncle Kallin’s voice yell out.
I just wanted a few more moments alone. To breathe in some fresh air, rather than to be in the same room, stuffed like a sardine and being ogled at by several others.
I knew they could hold off on the announcement until they caught on to me.
“Nico!” Kallin yelled. “What are you? Five?”
I wanted to chuckle, but I also didn’t want to give away my location. I just kept on moving to the center of the maze.
“Fuck,” I heard someone mutter under their breath. I peeked around the corner and saw a tall Alpha leaning his head back against the hedge. He gripped onto a bottle of vodka with one hand, and with the other, gripping onto the omega he was burying his cock into’s hip. He swished the bottle around for a second, and then he took a swig of vodka.
Honestly, how gross could someone be? With their pants down to their knees and at a mating ball nonetheless. I mean, unless they were mates. It’d make a bit more sense in that matter. The omega stood upright, arching his back to the alpha’s chest.
The alpha wrapped the hand that had been on the omega’s hip around his neck. The dark skin of the alpha contrasted with the omega’s pale milky white skin, and the alpha kissed the omega’s neck hungrily. Almost as if he were about to mark the poor thing.
But then the world stopped when the alpha’s reddish brown eyes met mine. A smirk formed on his lips, almost sinister. The color of his eyes signaled that he was one of the royals from the Cashum kingdom. His overwhelming scent hit my nose.
I dropped to my knees, shock taking over my body.
Him?
This had to be a cruel joke of fate.
He thrust into the omega a few more times, then groaned when he released inside of the poor thing.
The alpha let out a chuckle and pushed the omega away from him, taking another swig of alcohol.
“Hey,” The alpha slurred, keeping his eyes on me. “You’re pretty.”
I was speechless, unable to form words or even a thought to reply. I just stared in silence, with my jaw slacked and eyes widened. It was almost as if the alpha had no shame.
“Do you want some?” He asked, holding the mostly empty bottle to me.
“Nicolas– Oh dear goddess…” Kallin broke my thoughts from the alpha in front of us. “Would you cover yourself up!” The elder omega shouted at the alpha, who still had his pants around his knees.
“Oh yeah,” The man replied.
“Are you alright?” Kallin asked.
“Peachy,” I responded, getting to my feet.
“Damnit, your cape is wet now, Nico.” Kallin scolded me, helping me straighten myself up.
“Yeah.” I said quietly.
“Well, let's get back to the ballroom. Your father is going to make the announcement of him making you the crown prince.” He patted my back a few times.
“Okay,” I replied.
