Eh, Fairytales

Eh, Fairytales

Feb 22, 2022

She sat on the top bunk like a poisonous apple with the newest fairytale on her lap. The fairytale was written by the strange white-haired man who lived down the road in a shabby little cottage covered with roses. He loved to write stories for the kids in town- including herself despite never truly enjoying them. They were always so basic to her.

The story always started out with an adoring female, blessed with wisdom or beauty or whatever other romantic crap the authors write. Then suddenly, something awful comes about her. A wicked stepmother destined to make her life miserable or her father being held captive by a beast.

She turned the page, her golden eyes picking up the sentence on the top of the beige-colored page. But his was different. He made no attempt to make the protagonist a female but rather a boy farmer who meets the Butterfly King. The King is...questionable and by which if this was a horror story- it would be a fantastic one because his personality was split- but this story is meant for children and she appreciated that. He tells the farmer boy if he can find the thing he is interested in, he will make him wealthy. Wealthy enough to attend a princess's debutante ball that's being held in six months.

Currently, in the newest volume that she was reading, the boy stumbled upon something interesting about the King. He wasn't always destined to rule the throne of Butterflies but was a boy, around the main character's age who had a friend that fell into a coma decades ago. She could be what he is looking for.

A knock landed on the open door of the large bedroom and her attention lifted, bringing it back into reality. Children's laughter echoed in the room as her eyes darted towards the young helper girl with long burgundy hair and big green eyes. She wore her usual off-white cardigan with a brown shirt, dirty jeans, and flat black shoes.

"You're taking being grounded well arent you, Beloved?" she smirked, stepping foot into the room.

Beloved sighed, "How else am I supposed to take it?" She would've said the helper girl's name if she didn't forget it. She was always bad at names, "I'm finally alone with my own thoughts and a book."

"To be honest, spitefully. Everyone else in the orphanage is playing outside. Even Taras."

Beloved turned her head to the left, peering out of the white framed window and to outside. From the treeline, she saw Taras speaking to some of the other kids with joy. She was always better at socializing than she was and in some cases, prettier than herself with long blonde hair and matte black eyes.

"Taras can do whatever she wants." she answered, bringing her focus back on the girl, "Besides, shouldn't you be somewhere else, helper girl?"

"My name is Marcise and I was until I was told that you have mail and it might be from the church." Marcise strolled over to the bunk bed and handed Beloved the white letter tucked in between her fingers, "Despite them coming tomorrow because of you."

"Oh, I love the church." Beloved rolled her eyes, taking the letter, "They're probably sending me best wishes again!" She smiled, tucking the letter in the opening of the book.

Marcise shrugged, ready to head to the door but her thoughts stopped her and she opened her mouth, "Hey Beloved..."

"What is it?"

"If funding gets cut from this place because of you....everyone's going to hate you...you know that right? This is the only orphanage in 18 miles. We can't lose this place because you want to start fires and cause chaos..."

She bobbed her head, completely forgetting why she was alone in the first place. 48 hours ago she had set fire to a historical building, burning it down to the ground completely. The reason? Because she wanted to.

"Not my problem." Beloved responded, "They shouldn't leave matches around."

Marcise's shoulders dropped, "I knew you would say that. Have a good day."
