I hadn't slept last night. I just stayed awake the entire time. Staring at the ceiling, my eyes open and tired but I couldn't sleep. Today was the day! I was getting my tattoo! Not a tattoo where a sharp needle is plunged into your skin and ink is injected into your blood. No. The soulmate type.

A bit of back story. When WWIII ended almost a century ago there was a drastic drop in population. Due to extreme sorrow and mourning many more people took their life or died dropping the earth population to 6 billion people. When the war started we had 8 billion people when it ended and the time thereafter we lost 2 billion of the earth population! Since no one was taking the initiative to find true love once again tattoos started appearing on our body directly linking us to our soulmates. They represented the other but both would be quite similar to one another. The tattoos would be in the same place as your soulmates tattoo. When you meet your soulmate both your tattoos will start to glow a bright blue colour and a bright string will bind the two together before crumbling away and leaving a glowing blue string around the couples left wrists. Many were happy with this miracle but, sadly, many were unhappy. They were called ’Traitors’ and they believed in finding love by themselves after a journalist wrote an article on them calling them traitors they decided to adopt the name and have been called that since Day One. Traitors cover-up their tattoos with cloth, bandage, clothing, bracelets and cuffs. Pretty much anything that they can get their hands on. Some they don't even see their tattoos and cover it up days before it appears. According to different families, different people get their tattoos at different days. But always on their birthday. For example, one family can have their tattoos appear on the child's 17th birthday like mine or on the 21st birthday. But never above a person 25th birthday.

My parents were sadly traitors and didn't agree with the ways of the soulmate tattoo. They cover their tattoos with bandages on their lower backs and have cuffs on their left writs but I am fairly certain that they match. Not only because it is in the same place but because they love each other dearly. I have an older sister called Sophia who wasn't a Traitor but pretended she was one so that she could have a reason to hide her tattoo. Sophia had met her soulmate, Caleb, the sweetest guy to ever grace this earth and perfect for her. But just days before their wedding Caleb was driving home when a drunk driver sped through a red light and crashed into Caleb's car causing it to topple over. When the ambulance got to him he was practically dead and with his last breath he had said,
”Sophia, I love y-” before taking a ragged breath and the heart monitor flatlining. The guilt had practically ripped Sophia apart.
She came home, apologizing to mom and pops and proceeded to cover up her tattoo because when you lose your soulmate your string will disintegrate and messy red lines will be slashed across the tattoo. They reminded Sophia every day of her lost one and she couldn't handle it.

I ran out of my room quickly speeding into Sophias. She was waiting there expectantly. I bit my lip.
"Ready?" she asked.
"Ready as I'll ever be," I responded confidently even though the nerves were completely destroying me. What if it didn't match with Jacobs? My boyfriend? I had never seen his tattoo but he promised to show it to me when I got mine. I was so excited but also super nervous at the same time! Sophia examined me and quickly found my tattoo on my left shoulder. I spun around and examined it. It was beautiful. It was a dreamcatcher with long detailed feathers and underneath stands a cat its back bent inwards matching the curve of the dream catcher its face pointed to the side. Its eyes were different colours. One blue and the left red. It was a black cat and a white dreamcatcher. I wonder what this had to do with Jacob?
"It's beautiful!" she exclaimed. I twirled around.
"It is!" I said smiling, I hugged Sophia tightly, I ran back to my room and grabbed my phone.

Raine is Olives best friend. They have been friends since kindergarten when the teacher partnered them up to hold hands while walking in the line and they immediately hit it off, as well as the fact that their names were pretty unusual. Olive was your usual bookworm while Raine the exact opposite. Olive wore dull and comfy clothes which were usually jogging pants and a sweater in earthy tones while Raine wore bright colours. Olive met Jacob or Jake as they call him because of Raine. He was in her friend group, he admitted to having feelings for her after years of stolen glances. Soon enough they were dating and eventually a couple. They had been together for almost 3 years and Olive felt like he was truly the one.

I pulled on a black shirt that just managed to cover my tattoo. I definitely did not want my parents to see it, they would flip. I pranced downstairs and gulped down my cereal managing to not say a word to them, I did not have a good relationship with them per se. I rushed upstairs did the morning things, grabbed my stuff and ran back down climbing into the passenger seat of my sisters Toyota. I was so excited for today!
