It was a Wednesday night, not too late, just the time right before the sun was going to fully set. The sky still had shades of dark blue entangled with the pure darkness. I was at my friend's house spending the night there. We sat around watching t.v. until we got bored and decided to go into the kitchen to grab some snacks. My friend's father was still at work so we were going to be alone for a few hours. We were 14 at the time so to us this was a big deal. He and I began to raid the fridge before hearing a tapping coming from the living room window. Mind, that we live in a rural area where the houses are some distance away from each other and in between them open fields and scattered woodland so there is not much around.
We heard the tapping again and again until it stopped. Me and my friend looked at each other feeling hesitant to go check out what was causing that noise.
My friend was first to build up enough courage to go and check.. and by check I mean he peeked from around the doorway. He turned around saying that nothing was out there. We continued to do what we were doing and brought the snacks into the living room. It wasn't too long after we sat down before we began to hear a scraping sound coming from what we thought was the back door. We both got up and checked to only hear the scraping sound stop as we got near. My friend checked the door and saw it was still locked. We were feeling more confused than anything, that was until we heard the tapping against the window again.
At this point we both were starting to get annoyed so we quickly returned to the living room, where our hearts dropped. Standing at the window was a man wearing all black. His hair was as dark as the night and his face was pale. His eyes seemed to be open wider than any eyes we've ever seen. They were cold with the slightest glare of madness. His eyes along with a sadistic smile on his face sent chills down our spines. He kept tapping on the window staring at us as we were at him. The sound was all that kept the moment from falling into a horrific silence. It felt like forever until the man began walking away from the window, making his way alongside the house. He kept tapping until he was out of sight.
We didn't realize because of the fear that the direction he was going was toward the front door. Luckily we knew that the door was locked. However, the man didn't know that at first when he began to slowly turn the handle only for it to stop from turning all the way.
He slowly tried opening the door again, failing just as he did the first time. For the slightest moment we thought he left, instead he started rattling the door knob forcefully trying to get it to unlock. We began to hear the sound of a creepy giggle that turned into manic laughter as he began banging on the door while rattling the doorknob.
We ran upstairs and into my friend’s bedroom shutting the door behind us. I called 911 and told the operator everything while faintly hearing the man downstairs still at it with the door. The operator told me the police were on their way and for some reason, most likely out of fear I chose to hang up instead of staying on the line.
Maybe it was for the best since when I got off the phone and my friend off his from calling his father, all sounds from the man stopped. Everything seemed ok but we were both scared to check. We didn't hear him enter or any noise proving that he was inside. My friend went over to check outside his window, which you could see a bit of the road leading to the house, seeing if we could make an escape.
It was near instantly that he froze, his voice stuttering and shaken as I thought he was trying to call me over. I walked over taking a glance out the window to soon discover that which brought my friend to this state of fear. Below the window was the man facing the wall of the house.
How did he get back here so fast? He just stood there staring at the wall.. Before we could move away, his head slowly looked up. He still had that sadistic smile and his eyes still remained the same as they were when we first saw him. He started to giggle again as he stared at us. We ran out of the room making our way down the stairs to the front door.
Before we got to the living room, we caught the slightest glimpse of him standing at the living room window like before. We made a hard turn away from the living room and made a break for the back door. We scrambled out of the house in panic thinking he was right behind us. I looked over my shoulder to see we were alone.
We ran and hid behind some bushes not too far from the house. We took a moment to catch our breaths before looking back at the house. Peeking around the bushes we could see the backdoor was still open. However we saw something pass by in front of the upstairs window.
My friend quietly responded to this by saying. “he's in my room!”
We saw the silhouette of the man pass by the window a few more times until we began to see the flashing lights of police vehicles coming from the front of the house. Two officers guarded the back entrance which for us was a miracle. We ran up to them telling them everything while trying not to stumble over our words as we did. They assured us they had officers checking the house and that we are safe now.
Not too long after, my friend's dad pulled up quickly getting out of his car meeting up with us as we were escorted to the front of the house. He hugged us both out of worry asking if we were ok and apologizing for leaving us alone. We told him that we were ok but shaken by all the events. As we talked, we could hear the same manic laughter we heard what felt like only moments ago echoing in the house, getting louder like he was getting closer.
In this case, he was, but accompanied by two other officers handcuffed and restrained.
“My God.” said my friend's dad. The strange man laughed the entire time until the silence of the closing car door of the police vehicle shut, muting his insanity. He turned at us looking with that same look as though he had no care of what will happen to him. After the officers took our report, they departed driving into the distance.
The terror was over, and about an hour since the event. My friend, his father, and I sat watching t.v. trying to calm our minds. We were flipping through the channels until we found the news was on. It was breaking news, and news that took all sense of peace from us. The news banner read,
“LAUGHING MAN ESCAPED FROM POLICE VEHICLE.”
All we caught from the broadcast was that he caused the police vehicle to crash injuring both officers in it and that the man was not found.. Although this happened, we haven't heard about or seen the man again but some days at some moments, I could swear I could hear his laughter coming from the shadows.
