On an ordinary day, Minera is going to class dressed like a casual University student. The sounds of her shoes knocking on the stone path are mixed with mild wind shaking tree leaves across the sidewalk as she goes. Her long hair and the flower dress she wore today are teased by the wind making her brush them at times. As she is near the University entrance, the number of the passerbyers also increasing. Some are enjoying today’s sun warmth, some are reading books under shadows of bigger trees around the campus, and some are so distracted by their school group project assignments that their voices in argument are heard.
It is about time for the start of class. Someone is shaking her hand in the air from the middle seat in the auditorium which Minera’s eyes finally caught. Nika, a cheerful looking girl with shorter, light color hair became friends with her at the beginning of their Freshman semester. Since then they have been hanging out as close friends. Their favorite things to do together should be shopping and eating out local delicacies around their campus and sightseeing when it is down.
Whenever these two girls’ classes are parallel, they are inseparable, they sit side by side. Sometimes they can whisper to each other during classes or copy each other's notes. Nika is the one lazing when it comes to taking notes. This time also she is just playing with her mobile under the desk while Minera is concentrating on their Accounting class.
Suddenly, Nika straightened her back. She started chewing her small lips with worry in her eyes looking at her phone and her friend a couple of times. Eventually, she decided to pinch a corner of Minera’s sleeve and shaked it slightly with hesitation.
“Sorry if I hurt you, but I think you should see this” said Nika, bringing her phone screen towards Minera, handing it right to her hand.
At first, she had an empty head, trying to guess what was going on here. It was an ordinary social media post belonging to an unfamiliar girl. She thought “ What’s wrong with this picture?”. All of sudden, for a moment, time, space and everything else stopped for Minera. Her full body froze, cold sweat ran down through her face. Her eyes were running left to right, left to right repeatedly, reading the caption over and over. She saw a dearly name tagged to the post, bottom written “Thank you for the gift to our Anniversary Day”.
Minera to Nika “Do you know her?”
Nika,”No, I don’t”. Paused, and hesitant “ I think she is friends with one of my followers, this is how I might have followed her back."
Minera “But I can’t see anything through my own profile. Am I blocked or hidden?!”
Nika “Might be. What is your plan?”
Minera “ I have no idea yet, but I must meet him in person.”
Minera chose to sit on one of the benches seemingly isolated in the park so she could have a serious conversation with Jul. She is so nervous, cannot decide if she has to end or accept his apology if that ever happens. She has nothing to do other than playing with her fingers while making up all the conversation that hasn’t happened yet. She keeps trying not to overthink but she keeps failing.
From the front, a guy with a cute smile was approaching. He said “Hi!”. Minera welcomed him with a smile too. He sat down next to her, reached to put his hand on Minera’s standing on her side. She tried so much to control her emotions, and didn't even look at his face.
Minera “I asked you out today to sort out something, otherwise, I don’t think I can live in peace with these thoughts in me. I want you to be honest and serious, give me only the right answers. I respect your choice to keep them in you if you prefer that but I really want to hear them out at this moment”.
Jul “ Alright, go ahead”.
Minera “Thank you”.
“I saw this suddenly” she brought out her smartphone and went silent until Jul could figure out what was going on.
He gave back her mobile and started staring in the front air.
Minera’s eyes and ears were expecting something to finally happen. She stretched her arm to Jul’s face, turning his head, wanting to make eye contact. She seems calm, gentle but that is just forced patience.
They had silent eye contact for a moment while she kept looking for expressions from Jul’s each eye apple separately. His mouth opened with huge hesitation but he definitely knew he couldn’t escape this time at all. Even though he did this time, it wouldn’t go far. He voiced “Yes” and suddenly felt stinginess on his left cheek.
Minera realized what she did, it was her first ever slap. There is nothing left to do, what she could do now. She only got up and walked away. She did expect Jul to go after her, at the same time she hated the idea of meeting him again.
Betrayal? Yes, it is betrayal. It is obvious that there is no point in picking up the shattered pieces and sticking them together for the rest time. It definitely won’t get better, but only worse. The pain which is stuck to Minera’s trachea isn’t letting her breath. Her head is full of speech, she feels that she isn’t able to control her body, so she is only going, wanting to run away from this damned place. Where could she go other than her dormitory. Anyway, she really needs to sleep, wake up from this terrible dream.
