Chapter I: Sometimes, faith is not enough

Chapter I: Sometimes, faith is not enough

Feb 11, 2022

"Not unlike many stories you have heard before, mine started with a prophecy. A thousand years old prophecy, one that is whispered accross the seven first kingdoms, and that couldn't even be thought of in the eigth for fear of an immediate execution. You may know it at the Light's Fall prophecy.

Long ago, way before we were even bord, there was not one, but seven more Gods that lived in our world. Each one of them created their kingdom from the dust they gathered within the Bubble, and set them all to orbit the Prism which was bright enough to chase nights away. The Prism, also known as the Eight Kingdom was the Light's domain, and as it shone bright over the other lands, the Light found them repulsive. To the Light's eyes, these seven other kingdoms were nothing but ugly masses of debauchery, ruled by incompetent and ungrateful beings. The Light chases them away from their thrones, and took away their immortality and powers. Light's Fall prophecy says that each of the Seven Kingdoms, on the Seventh Day of the Seventh Month, will see the re-birth of their own God and that they will all unite to bring the Light's tyranny to an end.

The Light, although all-mighty, feared this prophecy and ordered for any child born on that day to be killed. The Seven Kingdoms, devoid of their leaders, had to conform to the new one's wishes. Their new kings and queens has been selected by the Light's divine doing, and it was only natural that they obey their master.

For a very long time, my mother had me believe I was born on the eigth, but recently I did learn the truth from her. She gave birth in secret, hid me from authorities until the next day so I would survive. And therefore, this scary date that is the Seventh Day of the Seventh Month, that is indeed my birthday. And it would also have been the day of my death if it weren't for my dear mother's clever ruse.

When she revealed the truth to me, I was still your plain old railroad worker. I did reparation work on the line that leads from Azul, my birth Kingdom, to the blue pole of Banafsaji. I made sure there were no issues with security in the tunnels and I want to add I was very skilled at my job and well liked by my coworkers. However, I do admit I had this feeling that this was not my destiny. Somehow, I knew I was put on this land to be something greater. One does not dream of railtracks as a child after all, I've always wanted to be a rockstar. I knew something was missing from my life, that I was not exploiting my true potential and my mother's confession hit me like a train, if you'll pardon the pun.

I am the reincarnation of Azul. It can only be me. I am the Hero everyone is talking about, the one that will free everyone from the evil Light's reign, that one brutish child murderer, dictator of silence and judge of our every action must pay, I say so!

This realisation led me to run away, I used the train tunnels that I was already familiar with. I knew where to hide from trains that would pass, and when I needed to avoid them. I knew the breaches in the pipes that linked our kingdoms together. These breaches that reveal our dear Bubble's red and yellow sky. Once I was close enough to my desintation, I slided into one of these breaches. I had brought a parachute, obviously, because I was quite high above ground as I jumped.

And this is how I reached this kingdom, near the Blue Pole, the one covered in tropical forests with their endemic purple flowers. This landscape that currently surrounds me, it used to be something I could only catch a glimpse of during my work days and now, it surrounds me. You'll understand why, on arrival, I felt overwhelmed. All these branches, and flowers, and plants... and the warm humid climate that almost chokes you with its intensity... I walked for hours and hours and I was truly exhausted and now... I guess I am tied up to this tree, sir."

"Oh thank fuck, you're done monologuing" the man who tied me up groans "I only asked for your fucking name, I don't give a shit about all that!"

"Oh, I apologize sir! I thought I had mentionned it, my name is Fabricio Giovi, or maybe I should call myself God Azul? This is quite a tough question actually"

"Oh, don't you dare say anything else, you've been rambling for at least ten minutes and my ears really want to beat the shit out of you."

The man that attacked me and tied me up is sitting on a rock in front of me. He must be around my age, that is to say somewhere in his late twenties. His skin is tan and his hair is a dark curly and dirty mess. So are his clothes, which on closer inspection, do look like they're covered in more blood than dirt. This stranger looks like some sort of runaway serial killer, or some sort of shady black market dealer... although, if he was in that business, he would probably be found in a city, and not some random woods where there was nothing more than wood sticks to deal. His clothes would be a lot cleaner too. He is currently scraping the bottom of a tin can with a spoon. A truly exasperating noise.

Besides, I must add that he is doing so in a very aggressive way, and that when he is done with whatever scraps of food were left at the bottom of his can, he threw away said can in the grass besides him. What about climate change?! See? This man is a villain! I should have known as soon as he tied me up to that tree but instead of that I revealed all kind of sensitive information to him! What if he sold me to the Light for additional canned goods?!

"Now that my mind is clear, 'cuz your words were more efficient than any kind of sleeping medication, you're gonna tell me what you're doing here, ten words max, or I break your legs."

I think one ought to take that threat seriously, I decide to answer with the pure, untainted truth.

"I have gotten lost in that terrible dark forest, sir."

"Fuck. Ten words. You're lucky."

I offer my best smile to my kidnapper. After all, it is now illegal for him to hurt me, if he is a man of his words. I lose my smile immediately after, as I realise there was nothing legal about kidnapping to begin him. What a brute!

I can't believe I was so happy to go on an adventure, live great things and accomplish my fate! I thought I would be the hero of many novels to come! And now I meet the end of my journey, one day after it started, in some crappy woods in the middle of nowhere, with some shady guy covered in blood.

As I notice the man's focus seems to be on his spoon, I discreetely pull on the ropes binding me, maybe there is a chance for me to get away!

...And the ropes loosen immediately, falling to the ground.

What kind of work is this? I feel insulted now! It is disrespectful to not even put the actual work to tie me up! I could have run away anytime! I look at my kidnapper for explanations and find him staring at me with an expression of boredom on his face. Is this a trap? Is he going to run after me into the woods? I want to add that I have never skipped leg day and that I am very adept at running!

He gets up.

Oh, wow, he's tall.

He must be about 6'6" tall! This is an impossible height to reach! Even if I started showing off my muscles I wouldn't manage to intimidate him! There is no choice, I will have to fight!

"You almost had me believe you." he says, "but... you're not anything god-like. You had the right info, and you almost got me, but why did you stop before mentioning the curse? Your cheap imitation of Azul was a failure, Fabricio. So if you've come all the way to kill me, do it now. I'll have all the time in the world again soon enough."

I must say, this wasn't what I was expecting. I suppose fighting will have to wait.

Fabricio is NOT your usual railroad worker, and nothing would convince him he isn't special. Ever heard of the prophecy? The one that says that the Light that took over the world would be defeated by the 7 gods the Light sent into exile ? Fabricio is absolutely certain he is the reincarnation of one of them, and even if he isn't he will become a part of the prophecy whether you like it or not!
