Adulthood. It's great until you actually reach it. Staying up all night watching movies sucks when you have to get up the next day and head up into work. Feasting on chocolates and sweets till you feel sick is great in theory. It becomes less appealing when you have to pay for everything. I shake myself out of my thoughts and head inside the café.
"Hey!" a voice calls out. A girl stands there holding several menus and a clipboard. Her name tag read Saria. She smiles.
"Are you the new hire?" That's right. I had applied to this job a week ago not really expecting anything until yesterday when I got a call from the owner.
"Uh y-yeah." I say, hoping to not sound suspicious.
"Neat," She turns around, "You'll have to talk to Wesker." Saria calls out to me as she walks off. I follow behind her as we walk up to the man behind the counter.
"Hey Wesker," The man looks away from the cash register as she calls him.
"This is the new guy." She points at me. I smile awkwardly, praying that I make a good first impression.
"Cool." He says looking at me and taking the piece of paper from the girl.
"Take him to the back." He focuses back on his work. "Lutius has his uniform." The girl next to me nods and walks off.
"Follow me!" She says and I trail along putting my bag on my shoulders, not sure what I had gotten myself into. We walked past groups of chatting teens and business men sipping their coffees, faces focused on their screens. We stop at a door and she turns to look at me, hand on the door knob.
"You ready?" She asks. No turning back now. I was either gonna prove myself worthy of this job. Or I was gonna completely mess it up.
"Dude? You Good?" I just nod in response, too nervous to speak. With that she opens the door.
Inside was a young woman sorting through a box of what looked like new plates and other basic kitchenware. She stands and turns towards us abruptly as we enter.
"Hey, Luti, this is the new hire." The new girl looked at me. The mask she wore stopped me from figuring out her emotions.
"We're gonna need a trial uniform." The masked girl nodded and then went into a side room. Saria turns to me and smiles. She then turns back when the side room door is opened again. Luti stands there with an overflowing box in her hands. She puts the box down and shuffles through the bagged uniforms. Occasionally she would pull one out and hold it up, then place it back in the box. After a minute or two she pulled one out and handed it to me.
"You can change into this in the storage room." Said Saria, as she softly shoved me in the direction of the room. I entered the side room and got changed quickly, not wanting to stand in a foreign room, nearly naked for long. I quickly buttoned up the shirt and slid the pants on. They surprisingly fit perfectly. I was both amazed and scared that Luti had gotten my sizing correct just by a single glance at me. The bow was the easiest part as it just clipped into place on my shirt. I messily piled my clothes in my arms, before shoving them into my bag and exited the room.
"How do I look?" I said nervously as I approached the two girls.
"You look great!" Saria responded excitedly as Luti nodded beside her.
"Umm... where should I put my bag." I say holding it up.
"Ah! Yes! You can put it into one of the spare lockers for now." Saria said as she pointed towards a set of about 10 lockers along the back wall of the backroom. The trio went over to it and Luti pulled a set of keys out of her apron pocket. She undid the lock on the locker and opened it for Yukion to put his belongings inside. Yukion stuffed his bag into the locker and shut it tight. Luti replaced the lock and locked up the locker. She took the key off of the set and handed it to Yukion. Saria held up an apron for him to wear.
"You can put the key into your apron." She said passing the apron to him.
"Don't worry about losing the keys, we always have lots of spares." She smiled.
"Just in case, Y'know, you forget about it." Yukion nodded then placed the key in the apron pocket.
"Ah," Saria quickly said "You should put it into the internal pocket, just in case." She pointed to a pocket on the other side of the apron. Yukion put the key into the other pocket and put his apron on and got to work.
Yukion sighed out in relief as he finished serving what felt like his hundredth customer.
"Yuki!" Saria called holding up my bag.
"Sorry for touching your locker, but you're free to leave!" I walked over to her and took my bag.
"Keep the uniform for Monday." I smiled. I hadn't screwed up my chance. Not yet at least.
"Thanks, see you Monday." I responded. I waved and then left out the door.
As I walked, my phone went off. Taking it out of my pocket I instantly turned it back on. I had turned it off so that I wasn't distracted by it while I worked. I expected it to be worried texts and missed calls from my sister but only had a few texts from my friend and roommate, Daigo. I smile as I read them.
'So...?' it started.
'How'd It go?'
'Did you get it?.
I smiled and responded with a quick 'Yeah'. Putting my phone away, I took my keys out and opened the front door.
"Yuki!" My sister yelled excitedly as she pulled me into an abrupt hug. She held for a little too long before letting go and worryingly asking
"Are you okay? How'd it go? Did you get the job?"
