Lily heard a rustle. She swiveled her head around, and locked eyes on the dark green patternpelt. There was something underneath it… she crouched down, and leaped at it. It gave a surprised yowl and Milo jumped out from underneath it. He purred out a laugh, and batted at her playfully.
“Shoulda found me sooner!! It was hot under there,” he groaned.
“Oh quit your whining, weakling! I was checking all the spots that a smart cat would have hidden in.”
Milo huffed and laid down.
“Don’t nap now!” Lily exclaimed, pawing at his ear, “we have playing to do!”
“Go play with Coco,” Milo said in return, smirking and kicking his sister off of the couch with his back paw.
“Umph-! Fine! She’ll know how to get the food.”
“Aren’t the Nofurs home though?”
“Nope~! They left!”
Milo got up and stretched, jumping down as he was suddenly interested in exploring.
“Hmph, so you’re not tired anymore?” she asked, following him as he padded into the kitchen to look for food.
Before Milo could respond, Oreo ran up to them.
“The Nofurs left the door open!! They left the door wiiide open!!!” she started chanting happily, her eyes wide, “we can start a clan like mother said when we were just one moon old!”
Both Milo and Lily gasped, their eyes wide.
“Yes! We can run away!!” shouted Lily.
“T-That doesn’t seem like a good idea…” said Cosette softly, as she and the others had been behind Oreo, “We get food and water and touches here! Why give it up?”
“For The Outside!!” exclaimed Milo, Lily, and Oreo at the same time.
The Outside was something their mother talked about before the kits came here, and it was a promising place. Their mother said that there were four clans who ruled the forest, each being strong in their own way. Legend has it Firestar, who died long ago, ruled Thunderclan, and defeated the forest’s strongest foes, and was as big as a tiger. His fur shone in the sun like fire, and just his glance could send any cat into a panic. The three kits wanted to be just like him, as they believed the exaggerated tales.
Bumblebee shook her head, her eyes wide, “no! That sounds dangerous!”
“Fun dangerous!!” shouted Lily.
“As long as I don’t have to catch a mouse or something,” Coco muttered, grooming her head to look dainty.
“Let’s just go before one of the Nofurs comes back,” Milo said, lifting his head up and puffing out his chest to appear bigger.
Oreo and Lily nodded determinedly, Bumblebee and Cosette glanced at each other since they had no choice but to follow the crowd, and Coco just kept grooming herself.
The six of them padded out slowly, taking in the sudden flood of warm, earthy scents. Lily ran around joyfully, looking at all the flowers and plants along with Oreo, and Milo tried to figure out how to get past the fence. It was a wooden plank fence, but the gaps were too small to just squeeze through. He walked along it until he found a loose plank, and he nosed it aside.
“Here!” he called out happily, and squeezed through it.
Shortly after he did so, Lily and Oreo followed. Coco was next, then Cosette, and lastly Bumblebee.
“We have to make a clan name before we go into there!” exclaimed Oreo, her fur standing on-end with excitement.
“We need something that strikes fear in the heart!” mewed Milo joyfully.
“How about… Fangclan,” Lily said in a tone that was supposed to be intimidating.
“Perfect!!” purred Oreo, “now we just need scary names!”
“Yeah! I’ll be… Strongclaw!” Milo chimed in happily, “cause I’m strong and have sharp claws!!”
“The I’ll be Loudroar!” shouted Lily, pride gleaming in her eyes because of how fast she came up with that.
“I’m Sharptooth!” said Oreo as she flashed a smirk, trying to show off her teeth.
“I want to be Snowbeauty,” Coco said, lifting up her muzzle to try to be dainty again.
“Bleeech! You can be… Pearlfire!!”
Coco thought for a moment, before nodding, “I suppose I can make do with that…”
“And since those two will make sappy names, we should name em!” Oreo tilted her head to the two shy kits.
“Yeah! Bumblebee can be… Bloodscar!” Lily mewed menacingly.
“N-No!” Bumblebee yelled.
“Yes! Bloodscar the medicine cat!”
“W-Well… I guess if I’m the medicine cat,”
“And Cosette will be Speckledrage! Cause she’s a tabby,” Lily purred.
“Ooo smart,” Oreo responded, getting Lily to puff out her chest proudly.
“Won’t we have to fight the other clans to make way for Fangclan?” Cosette asked quietly.
The kits looked at each other for a moment of silent realization, when Oreo leaped to her paws.
“Well duh we are. And we’re going to be awesome at it!”
Milo and Lily purred happily, completely on board once more.
“Yeah!”
But all six of them froze as they heard a silky voice mew,
“Ooh such brave kits~”
They all looked up and saw the neighborhood ragdoll twins smirking at them.
“Who told you babies you could go off into the scary forest?” one of them, Rose, asked.
“The Wildcats would eat you up without mercy.” the other one, Daisy, told them menacingly.
“We aren’t babies! You’re only a couple moons older than us!” Milo hissed, glaring.
Rose narrowed her eyes. “We’re ten moons old, you’re not even five.”
“Yeah get it right, kits.” Daisy snickered.
“Well we’re going to fight the Wildcats once we go into The Outside!” Lily raised her hackles.
“Oh you are~?”
“How cute.”
“The Wildcats are as big as Thunderbeasts with huge claws and lots of fur around their neck!”
“They test each kit by pitting them against each other to see who’s the strongest!”
“They kill anybody who touches them and they eat dogs in one gulp!” Rose and Daisy took turns saying, holding in laughter.
“You wouldn’t stand a chance.”
The kits, even Cosette and Bumblebee, stood up defensively.
“Then we’ll go right now and prove you wrong!” Hissed Oreo, while Milo and Lily nodded angrily.
“Oh, will you?” Rose purred, amused. “Then we’ll watch.”
“Fine!”
Milo nosed the board back open and the kits filed out into The Outside for the very first time as Rose and Daisy watched, knowing they weren’t going to make it back alive.
