After many crop failures and the death of livestock that the villagers could not explain, the people had enough. Enraged and in desperation, the villagers needed a scapegoat to enact retribution on. Someone that they could drown with their rage and frustration.
They eventually set their sights on a girl. The girl with mystical long black hair and who wore a loose, long-sleeved white garment with a green overdress. Always the same clothing and the same peculiar aura that raised questions. The girl from a family from an unknown place, who had moved into the village shortly before the crops began to fail.
After opening the door to the girl's humble dwelling, they snatched her from her home while she was asleep, covering the girl's mouth to her unsuspecting parents would stay asleep. By the time the girl did wake up, the first thing she noticed were tied hands, restrained by two men and surrounded by enraged villagers who thought that they had found their scapegoat.
Eventually, the villagers arrived at their destination. At the divine pool in the middle of the forest. The mythical pond that was said to be able to cleanse one of sin and show the world who someone really was. A divine bath filled with glowing water that was said to enact true justice.
"Witch! Fiend!" The angry crowd yelled as the two men allowed the kidnapped girl to speak again. One potential plea that may be able to change her minds.
"Please, I beg of you! I am no witch! Please, let me go! I have done you no harm!" The innocent girl begged, her voice thick with anguish as tears streamed down her face.
But alas, the girl's pleas fell on deaf ears. The villagers, blinded by superstition and rage, proceeded to push the girl towards the pool. As the girl began to scream in agony and fear, they dropped her into the divine bath.
Severe and burning pain overwhelmed the girl after she was thrown into the seering mixture. She watched as her dress tattered and her skin began to peel before her own eyes, although it was only a temporary sight. For the moment she opened her eyes while submerged in the mixture, the girl could sense her vision fading, the heat and the peculiar energy of the pond's contents burning her retinas.
She immediately tried to cry out in pain, but her mouth suddenly appeared to be nearly impossible to move. As if some sick force was trying to keep it shut without anyone restraining her.
Not only did her flesh burn, she could feel it harden as well. The girl felt her hair stiffen on her scalp. She could sense a layer of stone replacing her eyeballs, plunging her into darkness. She tried to cry out again, but her lips appeared to be frozen stiff.
Her arms and legs stiffened completely. The girl's flesh turned grey and hardened, her eyes frozen open and her hair fixed in place as if it was crafted by a sculptor. Her eyes appeared empty, while her face was perpetually locked in an expressionless state, albeit with a hint of sadness and fear.
As the water was beginning to get drained on its own as if trying to show off the twisted end result of the girl's transformation, the child could feel two appendages emerging from her back, causing a very sharp pain as she could hear the sound of a sharp object breaking through a wall of stone. A distorted and muffled scream emerged from her lungs.
Two wings had emerged from her back. Appendages in the form of two bat-like wings that were also made of stone. Her perpetually frozen fingers had also been altered in a grotesque manner, her nails and fingertips sharpened and appearing pointier as a result of the petrification.
"A monster!" One of the villagers exclaimed as the bath had emptied.
"It's what she truly is... what she always has been. An ugly witch with a heart of stone, inside and out. The divine pool merely shows what someone truly is like... just look at it. Those ugly claws and wings on such a hardened yet weak body. Pathetic." A female villager's voice was heard, followed by a triumphant yet malicious chuckle.
Unable to resist from being trapped in stone, the girl hyperventilated as she was being pulled out of the emptied pool, feeling the constriction from her chest and stomach being locked in place.
The villagers, filled with catharsis from having punished and maimed the innocent girl, dragged her out of the forest with a rope, the child's grotesque wings scraping over the ground. Eventually, the people had ended up in front of a cave.
"Where she belongs, forever..." After a walk into the dark tunnel, the villagers smirked as they placed the girl on her stone feet, forcing her against a wall deep inside of the cave. The villagers left with a satisfied laugh.
"No..." The girl wept. Tears streamed down her stone cheeks. Through her immovable lips, muffled pleas were emitted. "Help me... help me. Mommy, daddy. Mommy, please, help me. Mama, I'm hurting... I'm hurting, mama. Mama..." The wronged girl kept pleading. "Mama..." But no one could hear her muffled cries for help.
Unable to withstand the perpetual state of sleep paralysis and agonizing darkness any longer, the wronged girl entered a deep slumber.
