Breathing deeply and with control, I sit in the center of my cave — the place I have called home for the past fifteen long years. Flickering at regular intervals along the walls are blue-glowing demon flames, casting a cool, ghostly light. Beneath me rises a large, spherical rock on which I sit cross-legged, eyes closed. With each breath, my aura grows, expanding until it fills the entire cave. Heat creeps across my skin, seeps into my limbs as the flames within me awaken. With a deep breath, I push this inner fire to my fingertips, open my aura, and let it flow outward.

Like an invisible web, it wraps around the massive stone walls, breaks through them, and reaches for the outside world — the lush green meadow, the mirror-like surface of Lake Shigune, and the forest that crowns the cave and water like a dark wreath. My aura now spans for kilometers, touching every living being within its radius, sensing the gentle wind rustling the leaves and the white moonlight dancing upon the lake.

But my focus lies elsewhere: my mentors, who should appear at any moment. And indeed — just as I finish the thought, I sense their presence at the edge of my aura. They’ll be here in under two minutes.

Slowly, I open my eyes, straighten my back, and leap lightly from the rock. My bare feet touch the cold cave floor just as Kou, my faithful soul partner, approaches. He is a beautiful brown-and-black wolf with deep, sparkling eyes full of understanding and familiarity. He has remained by my side this whole time, a quiet companion who has never left me since our first encounter in the forest.

He was just a curious pup when I was sent into these woods to begin my training as a demon princess. We recognized each other instantly — two souls drawn together — and from that day on, we were inseparable. We train together, share exhaustion and strength, tend to each other’s wounds, and keep each other warm in solitude. Now, Kou, once so small, reaches my chest. I smile at him, running my hand through his soft fur. “The day has come, Kou. Today I’ll claim my inheritance and officially become the demon princess. Isn’t that exciting?” He gives a soft bark, an affirming answer, and a warm feeling rises in my heart. “Well then,” I say with a grin, “let’s go.”

Together, we walk toward the cave’s exit, stepping into the darkness and the pitch-black forest. Just a few meters away, I can already make out the silhouettes of my mentors by the lake’s edge. The demon fire they’ve lit throws flickering reflections across the water. The forest around us smells both sweet and earthy, and the moon casts dancing shadows on the damp clearing. I feel anticipation rising in my chest, that pounding sensation of finally being able to take the power of the demon leader into my hands — to protect and lead our people and our world.

Kou stays close by my side as we step through the wet grass. The darkness retreats under our gaze as we arrive at the ritual site, where my mentors are already waiting. The moment I have worked so long for is now within reach.

I stop just a few steps in front of them. Jeeyan, who has temporarily held the position of demon leader until I receive my powers, smiles broadly. “Nervous, Zaya?” he asks, eyes sparkling. “I can hardly wait,” I reply, an honest gleam in my gaze. He taught me the history of our world and how to wield demonic powers. Beside him stands Mion, the head of the mages. His bright green eyes shine with calm wisdom. He was the one who introduced me to the mysteries of magic and taught me the intricate fabric of our world and its many beings.

“Zaya,” Mion says quietly, “never forget what I taught you. From today, it will be your duty to lead our people, to shape our future. It’s a heavy burden, but I’m sure you will carry it with honor.” I nod firmly. “Prepare for a new world,” I whisper, and both Mion and Jeeyan chuckle softly, driven by pride and anticipation.

“Liz,” Mion now says, “let us begin.” From beneath his hood, a delicate elf with shining green eyes slips out — Liz, Mion’s soul partner. She’s sleepy but highly focused, and without a word, she glides over the lake with a graceful flap of her fine wings. Her silent communication with Mion runs so deep that words are unnecessary. Kou and I, too, understand each other on a level beyond speech.

“Zaya,” Mion explains, “enter the Shigune Lake until the water reaches your hips.” I nod silently, embrace Kou one more time, and step into the icy water. With each step, the cold makes breathing more difficult, but I grit my teeth and show no sign of discomfort.

From the shore, Jeeyan and Mion watch me. Jeeyan smiles encouragingly, while Mion is already murmuring incantations. A fine, silvery mist rises from his fingertips, spreads across the lake, and makes the scene appear even more surreal.

I bow my head and gaze into the water’s surface, where my own reflection shimmers under the pale moonlight. My light skin, my straight black hair, the small horns protruding from my forehead, my deep black eyes, and my pointed ears form a face that looks determined. The light white dress I wear now clings wetly to my body. The mist creeps up around me, and the night air is filled with a tense silence.

Kou waits at the shore, his eyes fixed on me. A gentle smile crosses my lips as I think of my people, of the demons I haven’t seen in so long, of the community we will return to. No more solitude, no more silent nights in the cave — but life, laughter, and the feeling of belonging.

But then, the world around me begins to change. The moonlight, which was soft and silvery just moments ago, slowly turns an ominous blood red. Confused, I lift my gaze — only to see that the moon itself has changed color. The water around me thickens, turns sticky, and when I raise my hand, a heavy film clings to my skin. My white dress stains a deep crimson, soaked in this strange substance. Horrified, I realize it’s blood.

I remember Mion’s instructions during my preparation. I am to drink two handfuls of lake water to strengthen my connection to the demon realm. Then, blind and without sight, I must expand my aura over the lake — but no farther. That is the crucial step to awakening my power. He told me nothing more, and he knows nothing more. This ancient knowledge is passed only to true demon princesses.

The thought of drinking this blood tightens my throat. But before I can make a choice, a dark hunger rises within me. Reluctantly, I lift my hands and sip the red liquid. The first taste is revolting and hesitant, but then a wild craving takes hold of me. I lose myself in this bloodlust, nearly forgetting where I am, while the figures on the shore blur into shapeless shadows through my dazed vision.

At that moment, Kou’s voice enters my mind. “Zaya,” he pleads, “stop. Remember the ritual.” His worried presence rips me out of my frenzy. The shock of my own actions makes me tremble. I force myself to drink again — this time with control, with discipline. “Thank you, Kou,” I whisper.

With determination, I close my eyes and focus on my aura. I channel the burning heat inside me back through my body, breathing deeply in and out. Even without sight, I can sense every detail: the water lilies now floating in this bloody fluid, the trees along the shore, and the dense mist that veils the lake. The entire scene is bathed in the ominous red glow of the moon.

But before I can proceed to the next step, a stabbing pain tears through me, as if fire is raging inside. It’s as though a glowing blade pierces straight through my heart. Blood seeps from my chest, and an iron taste floods my tongue. Panic flares — this wasn’t supposed to happen! Another stab slices into my heart, multiplying the pain beyond measure. I scream. My aura surges outward, seizing the forest, the entire island to its very edges. The agony drives me to the brink of madness, and everything inside me burns as my cries shatter the night. The pain defies words. I keep screaming, endlessly.

The world around me dissolves into a whirlwind of agony and heat. My screams echo through the forest, fading into the endless darkness. I feel my body nearing its limits, yet the unleashed power within me pulls me further, deeper into the abyss, offering no salvation. My aura, sprawling across the land, pulses chaotically, feeding on my loss of control.

At the shore, I see Kou. His eyes reflect a mix of fear and resolve. He barks — a desperate sound echoing through the heavy, damp air. His usually majestic fur seems to glow in the red moonlight as he gazes at me, head lowered and muscles tensed. It’s as though he’s calling me back, trying to reach me before I’m completely lost.

My mind is a battlefield. One part of me longs to embrace the unleashed power coursing through me, but the other — the part of me that is still truly me — clings desperately to something. To Kou. To the memories of my training. To the promises I made to my people. But the power is seductive and overwhelming. It whispers to me of unimaginable strength, of freedom, of a world I could shape as I desire.

Then, suddenly, I feel something within my mind. An anchor — a soft whisper. Kou. His presence cuts through the darkness, and amidst the chaos, an image appears: the little pup I found years ago in the forest, his curious eyes, how he joined me without fear, without hesitation. It’s more than just a memory — it’s a bridge back to myself.

With all the strength I have left, I reach for that bridge. “Kou!” My voice is hoarse, full of desperation, but it’s also a cry for help — a call to the only bond that can still save me.

He responds instantly. With a powerful leap, he bounds from the shore and lands in the bloodied water. His movements are strong and purposeful as he fights his way to me through the thick liquid. Every fiber of his being radiates determination, as if he intends to tame my inner darkness with his mere presence.

When he reaches me, he presses himself against me, and his warm, calming energy flows through my body. It feels like a protective shield against the relentless power trying to consume me. His deep growl echoes in my mind, a reminder that I’m not alone. That I was never alone.

With Kou’s help, I begin to regain control. The wild expansion of my aura slows, gradually retreating until it encompasses only the lake. The heat in my body subsides, the pain in my chest becomes bearable, and my screams fall silent.

Gasping for breath, I look down at Kou, who meets my gaze with his deep brown eyes. “Thank you,” I whisper, tears streaming down my face. “I... I would have been lost.”

He nudges me with his snout, a silent expression of affection and encouragement. In that moment, I know I must take the next step of the ritual — I must accept the power. But this time, I will control it. This time, I will be stronger.

But amid these thoughts, the pain strikes again — sudden and sharp. Like a burning blade driven with inhuman precision straight into my heart, the agony erupts in my chest. A brutal, searing fire, as if I were being consumed alive by hellfire. The pain surpasses anything I’ve ever felt and steals the breath from my lungs. I scream — a high, fractured sound that shatters the silence into a thousand shards. In the mirror of my inner vision, my face contorts, blood droplets seep from the place where my heart beats, and the metallic taste of iron once again coats my tongue.

Panic ignites within me — violent and uncontrollable. This wasn’t supposed to happen! Something is wrong. Terribly wrong. Once more, as if guided by a cruel hand, the burning blade drives deeper into my flesh. Each new stab wrings another scream from me, pushing me closer to the edge of insanity. My aura spirals out of control, rampaging like a raging beast over the lake, across the clearing, and beyond — until it envelops the entire island again. With every meter it spreads, the pain multiplies, becomes unbearable, and burns my thoughts to ash. I want it to stop — but my screams echo on, driven by fear and despair.

In the midst of this hellish chaos, I suddenly hear a howl — pitiful and trembling. Kou. He has pressed his head against my blood-soaked chest, as if trying to take some of the pain from me, as if trying to soothe my torment. His face is contorted, his eyes filled with sorrow. From the distance, I hear Mion’s panicked shouts: “Kou, you mustn’t be with Zaya! Kou, come back!” But Kou doesn’t leave. He stays, even as pain bends his body, even as his anguished whimpers tear the air apart. Tears run down my cheeks — not for my own suffering, but for the helplessness of watching my dearest companion suffer, powerless to protect him.

“Zaya! I’m here,” Kou pleads within my mind. “Give me your pain. You’ll die otherwise! Zaya, please!” I hear his voice deep within me, but I’m paralyzed, unable to respond. He keeps screaming, desperate, his voice merging with mine.

Then, without warning, darkness falls over us. A deep, living blackness, as if it had been waiting to devour us. I see nothing — feel only Kou’s warm head resting on my chest. With a heavy heart, I slowly open my eyes, uncertain if we’re already dead in that moment. But what I see makes my blood run cold. We are not alone.
