ERSTE LIEBE - First Love

I initially wrote this short story as a study of Rudolf, the protagonist of a longer novel I’m working on. I had in mind some aspects of him that I wanted to explore and I ended up writing more than planned, and while doing so I also happened to create an new character, Rose, who became really dear to me.
This is an introduction to Rudolf’s younger years, to catch a glimpse of his character, his dreams and fears, the people surrounding him and his world.

Archduke Rudolf von Habsburg-Lothringen was born to step into a role he found totally unfit for him.
He felt lonely, misunderstood and oppressed. He was scared of not being enough, as if he had to earn the right to enjoy his life even the slightest. Let alone to love and to be loved. Love was for him something almost totally unknown, extremely distant, that he was convinced he could have never experienced. Still, when he faced some particularly hard days, and a night spent in the company of his best friend and a good beer was not enough, then he had no other choice but to seek refuge in her arms. A candle flickering on a certain windowsill of the Daun-Kinsky palace was all he needed to feel alive again, in spite of everything else.
He kept denying this “love” Rose often mentioned to him, but was it really out of his reach?
