The question of ████████████
Researchers have made a breakthrough in ███ence: Humanity to further improve their quality of life.
“What differentiates us from animals is that we are not solely driven by the need for survival.” shares head scientist Rov█ ████er of the Ber████ Institution. “We are working on what can only be described as Perfection. With our most recent invention in ████, we have decided to take it a step further and ██████ ███████ █████ ███”

Science in controversy?
Rumors have already started circulating around the latest experiments held by the B█████ ███tution. For many it has become obvious that the people shouldn’t expect any new invention like flying cars, artificial intellig████ or anything ████rial. Rumor has it, the Institution is working on humans themselves, a deep dive into their DNA.
Citizens of █████ have begun protesting and blocking off access to the roads leading towards the Institution.
█████ denies all rumors that his team has used disabled peo███ as test subjects.
Non-governmental organizations already record nu██rous missing people, among these disabled, chronic███ diseased or drop outs.
█████ Institution states they are keeping details of their research hidden from the public to avoid causing any misunderstandings. “It is all for the future of hu████.” the CEO of their most prominent sponsoring company promises.

A new beginning is in sight
█████ ███████ to have found cure against physical and mental illnesses. Unwanted “characteristics” of humanity will soon be █████. Researchers seek to build the ███fect human.

August 1█, 204█
Today the ████ mentor toured us inside the lab████. Decades of research data is stored here, and even the governments of various countries are supporting the ██████. One of the senior researchers said they’ve finally found the right genes and the right way to reshuffle or rewrite the life code of people. It’s insane how far we have come! Each day we come closer to ███fection. I wonder if the superstitions are true though. They didn’t let us inside the ███████. Another senior said we can enter the control room only after graduating the initial training. What do they control there? █████ ███ ██They’ll present the project to the public soon.

March 2█, 204█
People are still skeptical, but that was expected. With the support of the government, the entire population is now under the researcher’s hands. It’s all for the best. In a sense, we are fulfilling every parent’s █████ — their child has greatness in reach. ███ are eliminating the ‘bad’ of humanity. No more genetic illnesses. No more ‘waste of resources’.We’ve created the perfect world! A new world!██ ████ ███████ Utopia!

In the center of the dark room sits a singular, lonely young girl. She waits a beat, then another, holds in the growl of a hungry stomach as she listens. A creak, shuffling feet, and eventually, a monotonous voice breaks the strenuous silence:

“Please, step forward.”

One imagines that in a previous reality, in an old world, a voice carried politeness and warmth. Perhaps it cherished something, held a weight to it that is loudly absent now. The young girl blinks once, twice, then she stands up, follows the man in a white uniform. She has only ever seen the likes of him, a curious sight that has her wondering if the entirety of this so called Academy is all the same.

Light breaches the curtain of darkness and the girl squints dry eyes, bites back any sound of discomfort. It is blinding, but her feet carry her to her location on auto pilot. One test here, another examination there.

There is something in this Academy, whispers about ‘ranks’, the good and the bad. The girl purses her lips as a needle pierces her skin. Had there been another child like her in the isolation they lock her in? Uncertain, the images are vague. They tend to leave; she doesn’t know where, but they do.

A gloved hand grabs her face and the girl blinks again as a bright light flashes directly into her eye. A weekly routine, that should be it. A regular dispatch out of her ‘room’ and into these reinforced walls with all their medical tests and knowledge exams. It gets hard sometimes, papers grow blurry and the pen shakes, yet the advanced tasks do not shake off of the sheet, nor do the researchers allow her a break. Asking for one won’t change anything either.

The routine is always finalized by a white sheet of paper, words strewn around and words expected of her. The girl inwardly exhales in relief as another pen is shoved between her fingers. When she’s finished, the Researcher nods, a minute change in otherwise stone expressions. Every time, she hopes the next day will be better, that she’ll leave this place too, just like everyone else.

Every time, she returns here again.

Another creak, more shuffling. The same faceless voice calls for her, returns her back to another routine of gearing to follow a white coat until they arrive in front of a monitor. There, she’s always guided to stand in front of the screen, a soft green light emitting from it and onto her eyes.

Welcome

Its robotic voice starts. ‘Welcome’? is an odd signal, but it is the sole one she’s given whenever the heavy doors groan open and its sole inhabitant is allowed inside. Welcome is never said to anyone else, so what’s the point of it? An identity?

The facility is suffocating. █████ keep data of the entire population. I have seen names, their tested IQ, their talents… ███ everything. The head researcher calls it the “GM Chart”. ██████ says it’s the only existing database housing all the information on the genetically manipulated ██████.

My grandfather still whines about the dwindling numbers of ██████. He says back in his “old world” days, people used to walk their dogs every morning. I saw a dog in the facility once. They ████ ██ down.

I’m starting to feel agitated. Paranoid perhaps. My grandfather says “Everything good eventually comes to an end”. My higherup mentioned a fluctuation in the database recording. 'Unlucky' Citizens to follow new protocol. Reference Entry #174
The GM Chart [Genetic Manipulation Chart] now has a new branch for anomalies.
People have shown signs of mental or physical deterioration.
Subject 02 lost all functions of the brain.
Subject 34 has grown disproportionate limbs.
Further anatomy anomalies spotted in Subject 63, 75, 190 and 356.
As per order [Reference Entry #176], all with signs of deterioration should be euthanized.
These creatures, as per Entry #174 are to be named Outcasts.

Digital Memorial of Q. Q. [...] Cities burned down and countries torn -- the world is yet again divided. Mindless fighting took a great part of my childhood, and only a few decades later did a group of Genetically Manipulated Vessels (or GMV, as they have begun calling us nowadays) finally dig their roots under safe ground, building what today is known as the Research Academy. Thick, reinforced walls were built around it, protecting it from any attacks. Thus, the dystopian world was divided into three. Some don't agree with the Law bestowed by the elder GMVs. To them, it is the same as robbing their identity and true self under the excuse of unity. Not for a greater cause, but to solve their own blunder and continuous mistakes. Refusing to cooperate, these people were thrown outside the Academy, dubbed as exiles. Anyone born from them is nothing more than a rogue. The rest of humanity, those who chose to sacrifice everything for the sake of security, were given assignments to aid and protect the Academy. The researchers, some old and some new, locked themselves inside to find another way to a "second utopia". The third group has long since been labelled as beneath human. Outcasts: the ones unfortunate enough to undergo transformation into mindless monsters, resembling the stories of zombies. These 'monsters' are the main danger to the Research Academy, their presence still growing, as they aren't a staple of the past, no, they can hide among newborns. The Academy reasures there are obvious signs of mental deterioration or physical deformation. This, among other reasons, has led to a hierarchal system which divides the Genetically Manipulated Vessels into ranks. Rank 5, banally dubbed as the bad rank, is assigned to those kept in isolation whilst the researchers in charge wait for their rank to 'upgrade'. If signs of an Outcast come first, these people are shot down, seldom thrown away. I don't believe their sugar coated words about the rogues. Outcasts are not the only problem. [...]

When it all began, the world broke from the cocoon to bloom into the most beautiful utopia. Yet the brittle wings did not fly far. They slowly broke off, until the world plummeted into the dystopia that preluded the apocalypse.
There was a light at the end of tunnel. Moth and butterfly alike were drawn to it. From the ruins of the old world rose the Research Academy, dedicated to protecting the growth of a new humanity.
So then why? Why is a moth born in the sea of butterflies? If it is meant to burn under the light.
