Dear mother,
The weather today has been excellent. In the afternoon, I went for a walk in the gardens with Ms. Keyes. She insisted we play that silly game that you know I hate. If you had been here, maybe she would not do that. Then we had some potatoes for dinner; it was very tasty. Father said they were “heaven-sent.” But Ms. Keyes did not agree. Yes, she had dinner with us; I know you do not approve, but Father insisted. He seems to feel that now you are away, I should have a female companion here at all times.
Anyway, how is grandmamma? I hear the weather in Marseilles is sunny and warm this time of year. This ought to help with her health issues. Please convey my heartfelt sympathy. I want her to get much better much sooner so that you can return to us. Father and I both miss you terribly, mama.
Your daughter,
Little bear.
