I wake up to the light feeling of tapping on my shoulder. Two yellow eyes stared at me from the edge of my warm bed. I Roll over and take a deep breath of the bread scented air, only to feel a sudden increase of pressure on my back. Glaring I try to wiggle the weight off of me.
¨Get up shokta,¨ I hear my friend say, pushing down more weight to try and get me out of the soft covers. Begrudgingly I sit up causing him to scoot back. He tilted his head to the side.
¨What do I have to do to be able to sleep in this house?¨ I groan.
He gives a small shrug and jumps up. ¨ You gotta get up or Dei is gonna have your head.¨ So that's why he came to wake me.
¨Well alright Kat I am up.. can’t say I don’t have anything to look forward to.¨I said rolling my eyes
Today our parents were going to let us go adventure after rush hour in our little bakery. I push Kat out of my bedroom and start getting ready. I throw on my blue dress and tie the white apron around my waist. I comb out my short black hair and brush all my lavender feathers into proper place. Quickly I make my way downstairs to our family’s bakery. I grab some bread to snack on while I sit in the one squeaky chair behind the pastry counter. As I eat my older brother Dei walks in, glorious blonde hair flowing behind him. He had brought in the orders from the shop in the town over from ours.
¨Ah you're awake finally.¨He sneered. I smirk knowing where this is going. His wings puff up annoyedly at me causing the box to be enveloped in fluff. Here comes the rant.
¨Look I understand sleeping in from time to time is good for us harpy’s, but you really need to think about how much you are holding up opening time! I mean...¨
I space out, not caring about baking and the importance of being open right as the clock strikes eight. My mind goes to all the possibilities of what may lie out there in the world. The only times I’ve seen beyond our town is when calling Kat home. Every day he gets to go out and explore our realm, the realm of Hoshtra.
My daydreaming ends as I notice the bunches of customers rushing into the now open store. I do my best and try to rush through, excitement fueling me. My parents are among the chattering customers probably speaking about our foods contents or giving children toys. Mother had a hobby for carving so she often would make small animals out of pine wood to hand out.
Slowly the morning rush started to slow down and noon neared. As each minute passed I could feel myself getting more and more pumped. At twelve my brother and I would be off of work and my parents would take over. So close to my life’s turning point. Far too close to the life I wanted to be living.
Twelve P.M. I bolted out ripping off my apron and leaving it behind. Dei quickly hung it up and ran out after me. Acelia was the small town I lived in my whole life. Very few actually lived here though it was a common spot for travelers to rest at for the night. I start to walk as my pretty boy brother catches up. Dei looks around happily at our little town while I'm more entertained by his long blonde hair flying everywhere in the constant breeze. I laugh as a giant lock of hair flies straight into his smiling face.
“Wonderful weather for a beach blonde isn’t it?” I jokingly say.
He rolls his eyes as the cliché catcall whistle rings out from across the street. It was almost every day that a creepy traveler mistakes him for a girl.
He blushed and with a huff says,¨I’m a dude.¨
The man's face goes as pale as a sheet in reaction to Dei’s hella deep voice. He mumbled something along the lines of “Sorry I didn’t realize,” and tried to run off.
I grab Dei's hand and scream,¨IT WOULDN’T BE ANY MORE OKAY IF HE WAS A GIRL!¨
He ran away even faster, but now everyone within the vicinity had eyes on him. I puff out my chest and continue to near the end of our town. Dei snickers at me, but doesn’t say anything. Only a minute walk to the town’s main gate.
At the gate, I stop and stare out at the scenery I’ve admired since I was little. I take a step onto the muddy path leading away from my home. I smile at Dei filled with excitement. I was a bird free from its cage.
I look around for the petite boy who woke me up this morning. He goes out here to avoid the crowds of people. From the corner of my eye, I catch a glimpse of a light violet ponytail behind a fallen tree. I slowly crept over to the large log and pounced on him causing him to let out a squeak. I gave him a big smile. Dei walked up from behind us.
¨You didn’t hurt Kat did you?¨ He asked worry in his voice.
Kat sighed and pushed me aside with a, “I’m fine.”
Dei helps us up and pulls out a bag full of things.
“I bought this in case anything went wrong. It has a first aid kit along with a beginners guide to traveling!” he sounded really excited.
I poke him ¨ it's always good to have a backup mom¨ I continue to poke him
He pushes my feathers away ¨ stop that you might bend your feather in an unnatural position and end up having to get it plucked.¨he stays sternly.
I ignore him grab kat and run looking for anything interesting for us to do.
Dei runs after me while Kat ahead and ends up being the one dragging me instead.
We stop when we hear annoyed yelling and groups of tiny laughter I let go of kat and listen to where it was coming from. Kat notices and his ears twitch motioning with his head to a sudden parting in the high trees surrounding us.
I get ready to run in that direction when kat grabbed me pulling me up to him ¨Do we really wanna deal with random people? It's not like we know them they could be horrible.¨
Dei looks around nervously ¨ y….yeah we shouldn't worry about other people's business.¨
He was just nervous about running into some of the angry old guys like some of them we see in town.
¨Can we at least go check it out?¨ I plead.
this was the only thing that caught my attention so far so I wasn't letting go easily on this fight. The boys look at each other before nodding at me.
Dei got ready to defend us if needed as we walk down the path separated from the way back home.
We find a place covered in giant blue illuminating mushrooms along with ice that once we stepped on lit up underneath our feet tiny fish surrounded the light
I felt excitement fill my chest looking around this amazing place I run across feeling light and happy.
I beam as I reach the end of the ice.
This place has peaked my interest and as I look behind me I can tell the boys also were enveloped in its fantastic sights and colors.
I jump onto the grass twirl around and allow Kat to take the lead he cautiously moves around the unfamiliar land listening for the laughter from before to lead us through this neon paradise we had found.
The yelling gets a lot louder down the path I then see a boy batting away at pixies along with a girl who sat there drinking…...tea with the pixies?
The boy was a pastel purple and the girl glows neon blue with the environment around her I stare at them they definitely are not creepy old men I step out into sight without thinking.
The boy see's me and yells out ¨hey you over there!¨ he waved his arms around above his head trying to get my attention. This caused the girl to also look at me along with every pixie in the area.
I nervously back away but kat rushes forward pouncing on the boy causing the boy to let out a high pitched scream of shock dei also walks in but towards the girl.
I follow quickly behind my older brother the eyes of the small pixies still on me I grab Deis coat hiding in the back of it as we move forward to the girl.
As we move closer I get a better look at her, her skin was a like a perfectly roasted marshmallow and her eyes were a piercing where a silver her hair was messily tied back in a ponytail.
Dei sits down next to her one of the heads of the mushrooms being used as a table and chipped teacups were scattered around it they were a light pink with little roses on the tops.
¨so what are you two doing here?¨ dei asks. The girl smiles ¨ ah we were just passing by when my brother over there got cerous. And tried to take the tea without asking which is why he is in the state you see now.¨
I look over kat sits on the boy's chest while he tries to wiggle his way out of kats strong push the girl sighs ¨Could you call off your...friend over there? Magevos probably gonna start screaming bloody murder soon.¨
I nod ¨ Kat! Down boy come over here!¨
Kat looks at me gets up and quickly makes his way over to us waving at the girl before plopping down next to me. Leaving Magevo laying on the ground staring at the sky.
I stand up fluffing kats hair before walking over to Magevo laying next to him wondering why he hasn't gotten up. I stare up at the ceiling it was covered in gems of all different colors. I felt the boy poke my check. I turn to look at him
¨Hi! I'm Magevo thanks for getting your dog boy thingy off of me!¨he said quickly.
A smile was spread across his face I take note of his hair and its light purple hue and his yellow eyes staring at me.
“ No problem,” I say sitting up
I stood up putting out my hand to the boy he grins taking my hand and stands up. He was super tall almost tall as a fully grown elf not that he had pointy ears. I stare up at him feeling small dang he was taller than Dei!
“ So why did you guys come here?” he asked tilting his head to the side his voice boomed with joy and fascination.
“We...heard your screaming so we came to check it out..” I mutter
His eyes light up” woah! Are you guys heroes??” he grabbed my shoulders
“ what..no! We are bakers!” I say
His eyes looked even more excited “ YOU HAVE FOOD??” he begins jumping with joy” could we come to your bakery...we don't have money so we will have to find another way to repay you...but”
He makes puppy dog eyes “ pwease??”
I nod nervously “ sure ok you wanna go now? I think it's about time we head home”
I walk back over to dei and the others now with the abnormally tall boy following closely behind and we all agree that yeah it would be a good time to go back to the bakery. We manage to make it back with nothing bad happening and the two following us looked around at the tiny town that we live in as I pull out my keys to the bakery seeing it is way past closing time. I open the door and walk into a dark bakery the only lights on were the ones displaying the cakes.
“Woah..this place is so big!” the siblings say in unison as they get a better look at their surroundings.
Kat immediately runs up the stairs to the room him and dei share.
as me and my brother begin making our guests some cake for them to eat and take with them tomorrow. also allowing them to stay for the night not wanting anything to happen to my new found comrades.
in the morning I am the first one up to make our guests some pancakes. While cooking my parents call us all down not asking about the others that happen to walk down the stairs with their children My father A tall man almost 7-foot stod holding my 5-foot mother in his arms
¨Shokta, kat dei. I have something you kids need todo.¨ he started giving us a serious look.
¨You three will need to head to the castle. the goddess has asked for us to attend but your mother is ill and you will have to go instead to bake her the cake she wishes. While on your way make sure to gather the ingredients I have listed on this paper and I have already packed your bags with enough food, water, and clothing for the journey.¨
I notice a short girl was standing behind him she had dark skin and black hair her long pointy ears pointed to the sky and her dark blue eyes stared at us.
¨ this is Netty the goddess of the ocean. She was the smaller goddess assigned to take care of you on your way there but also she will need you to watch over her as well and make sure no one finds out who she is while you travel . So no media or bad people try to hurt her.¨
Netty bows smiling softly at us ¨it is nice to meet you all¨
My father then looks at magevo and his sister smiling ¨you two since we gave you shelter will help them. Or suffer the consequences of staying in one place for awhile seeing that our cake is worth mi-¨
¨dont worry sir we will help them it's not like we have anything better to do¨epilepsy says smiling mango also nods happily.
I frown this was sudden but I wasn't going to against my father and neither was my brother. Kat just did anything to protect me and Dei us being the only family he has had since he can remember. So just because the pacing seemed rushed I ignore it and continue with what my father wished.
