The Princess is a Gangster

It Started with a Bet

It Started with a Bet

Sep 21, 2017

Even the Devil wasn’t foolish enough to get on her bad side. At least, that was the rumor surrounding Mikayla Flowers, the current leader of the Rancho Luna gang. Known as Crazy Eyes to her friends and enemies, Mikayla was raised by her uncle, Shiner Flowers, a former boxing champion and current boxing coach. She was a hothead, known for speaking with her fists rather than her words.

“All of Kingston dies tonight!” Mikayla shouted, raising a gloved fist in the night are as the engine of her motorcycle roared in response to her battle cry. Her fellow Rancho Luna members cheered in agreement. Every member of the Rancho Luna gang was dressed in black to match their deadly intentions. Armed with baseball bats and cans of spray paint, they were ready for a street war of epic proportions. The excitement of being in enemy territory caused them to ride with total disregard for the other drivers on the roads of Kingston, the town that bordered Rancho Luna that was brimming with spoiled rich folks that loved to flaunt their wealth.

It had all started two days ago when Rancho Luna High had been the victim of vandalism. Even now, Derogatory words and phrases scrawled in red and blue paint defiled the school. Toilet paper trimmed the halls like tinsel and the janitors were still working on removing the dried egg yolks that decorated the cafeteria walls. Trophy cases, windows, and computers had been damaged beyond repair. As if that weren’t enough, a papier-mache statue of the school’s mascot, Barry the Beaver, had been decapitated.

It was a blatant declaration of war. Rancho Luna High served a low-income population and the school’s budget had always been tight. They had never installed cameras, which meant there was no footage to capture the culprits. Despite this, everyone knew red and blue were the school colors of Kingston High. They had no choice but to seek revenge.

Citizens of Kingston seemed shocked and appalled by the bikers from Rancho Luna, who were making a point to drive their motorcycles on the sidewalk in order to harass pedestrians.

“Hoodlums!” an older man shouted, shaking his fists.

Mikayla and her gang stopped in the middle of Kingston’s town square, where a group of riders on Harley-Davidsons waited. She stopped her bike close enough to see their leader’s stormy gray eyes.

“Well, look what we have here,” Mikayla muttered, still sitting on her bike.

“What the hell are you doing on our turf, Crazy Eyes?” Jared Hollister, the leader of the Kingston Crew, asked. He was raking his fingers through his hair while holding a helmet in his free hand.

Mikayla scowled. “Isn’t it obvious? You rich kids can’t be that dumb.”

Jared grinned. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were here to ask me out, Crazy Eyes.”

“As if,” Mikayla scoffed.

“Why are you here?” Jared asked.

“You bastards messed up our school! We want to be compensated.” She flashed him a big, fat smile.

“Compensated?” Jared repeated. A few of his crew members laughed in the background. “Compensated for what?”

“For the computers you broke at our school, and for the emotional distress you caused.”

This time Jared laughed. “Do you even know what emotional distress is?”

Mikayla’s back straightened. “Of course I do! I watch Judge Judy.” It’s when you cause distress to my emotions.” In an overly dramatic voice, she continued, “It was very emotional for me to see my school after you punks destroyed everything. You even used the toilet paper from the girl’s restroom to TP the school. Do you know how much it sucks to not have toilet paper after you just used the bathroom? I had to wait for someone to come and bring me some. That was damaging, plus, Billy had a nightmare.”

A skinny kid in the back who must’ve been Billy shouted, “It was a scary nightmare, too! We have to go to school all year because of you.”

“See?” Mikayla raised her brows. “We deserve money for the computers and the emotional distress you inflicted on us.”

Jared snorted. “Do you have proof that it was us that vandalized your school? Or are you just here thinking we’ll give you free money?”

“Proof? Why do I need proof? Everyone knows red and blue are your school colors. Pay up, Jared.”

“You sound like a scammer.”

“A scammer?” Mikayla spread her arms wide. “We’re just people trying to live. If you hadn’t bothered us, we wouldn’t be here. I have to protect my people. You shouldn’t have used your school colors if you din’t want us to know it was you Kingston losers who vandalized our school.

“Is that all you’re going by? We can’t be the only school in the state that has red and blue as their school colors,” Jared said.

“Stop trying to deny it!” Mikayla pointed a finger at him. “We want to be compensated for all the damage your crew did. Even though we hate your guts, we’ve been to easy on you Kingston losers. I guess you need to feel the pain of Rancho Luna’s fists to learn your place.”

Jared Hollister grinned before his eyes slowly traveled up Mikayla’s body. She was wearing dark boots, tight black jeans with ripped knees, a faded dark v-neck shirt, and a faux leather jacket. Her dark, curly hair was pulled back in a braid and her crazy mismatched eyes, one brown and the other blue, were flashing warning signs at him. Around her neck was a silver, heart-shaped locket.

“I’ll tell you what,” Jared said softly, so only Mikayla could hear him. “I’ll challenge you for the compensation money.”
