A coming of age adventure set in a sci-fi/fantasy world that is on the verge of incredible breakthroughs in space exploration because it has decided to stop wars and invest in green infrastructure.
- A story for all of the kids who are between cultures. I grew up not being American enough to relate to the kids at school. No matter how much I tried to keep up there would always be a movie I hadn’t watched, an artist I’ve never listened to, an event I have no idea happened.
I was also never Dominican enough. I loved plantains and salami, but I never learned to dance merengue. Im a great athlete and have played most major sports, but baseball was one of the first sports I dropped. I love the storms and blue waters of the Caribbean, but have always sought the north and cold weather. I could speak both English and Spanish, but I was never fluent enough in them to feel confident in my cultural identity.
My hope is that this world will give kids like me a home while they learn to balance their dueling lineages. I hope that it will give them confidence in their self-identity and teach them to strive to their full potential when all they have is themselves. There are various challenges one faces when they are between cultures, you’re tasked with things you don’t want to deal with or never thought you’d have to be responsible for. It’s unfair to ask these things out of someone who’s just trying to find their place in the world.
Thats why I’m writing this story.
I want to help those kids blossom into the unique leaders the world has asked them to be. I want Stellar to serve as a guide on how to bring the world’s cultures together through intersectionality and I want it to guide them away from the pressure to belong.
I want to help kids like me feel secure and I want to let them know that it’s okay to belong to yourself while you figure everything out - your family and friends will love you anyway.
