It's 2020, and apparently we're still giving major sci-fi awards to racists and fascists. Not only that, but said authors are being spoken of fondly and with reverence by the host of a ceremony where many of the winners and nominees are POC, women and LGBTI.
Fuck Lovecraft and Campbell. Their pro-slavery and white-supremacist views have no place in contemporary society. This isn't a matter of liking or disliking their works. It's a fucking award. To a person. And in this case, to dead racists. Does the Hugo team seriously think this isn't a problem?
AND THIS IS ON YOU TOO, GRRM! I don't care whether you intended to or not, but your speech was racist and transphobic. You need to formally apologize, not just quote Voltaire (who -- guess what -- also held racist views) and hope that everyone magically forgives you for everything.

The transgender community has been under attack recently by a certain famous author of fantasy and her followers. As an amateur writer of fantasy and LGBTI+ advocate, I'd like to state where I stand:
Trans women are women, trans men are men, and non-binary people are real. Intersex mutilation needs to be stopped. Bisexual erasure is not acceptable. Lesbophobia is also not acceptable, of course. Detransitioning is a real issue that affects a minority of people and needs to be spoken about within the trans community, and NOT weaponized by haters to attack trans people as a whole.
Also, Black Lives Fucking Matter. And call out ableist people and institutions on their bullshit.
Below is a list of a few fantasy authors I like which have been more respectful of transgender people, in case you (like me) don't feel comfortable reading the aforementioned author anymore:
- Neil Gaiman.
- Ursula K. Le Guin.
- Nnedi Okorafor.
- Terry Pratchett.
- Kamilla Benko.
- Philip Pullman.
- Tamora Pierce.
- Rick Riordan.

Ever wondered how much your favorite authors and artists make from ads?
My stories have always been non-profit, so I never bothered with ads. But Tapas sometimes has this message over the ads saying "Ads support creators", and I was curious as to how real this support was. So I enabled the Tapas Ad Revenue Program at the beginning of the month.
So far, I registered 2382 ad impressions... which translates to a $0.13 revenue. Doing the math, this means that Tapas usual pay rate is roughly $0.00005 per ad impression. Or: 1 cent every 200 impressions. What does this mean for authors?
Here's one case: My average novel has 25 chapters. At 2 ads per chapter, this means 50 ad impressions each time someone reads through a whole novel I wrote. So for each dedicated reader I get, I make... $0.0025. That's a quarter of a penny. Which means that if I sold my stories as e-books on Amazon for a single penny each, I'd be making 4x more than what Tapas pays in ads.
Another example: How many ad impressions an author needs in order to make any actual money at all? Tapas only actually pays an author once you gather at least $25. Do the math, and you find that reaching $25 requires about half a million ad impressions. How long does it take?
Suppose you manage to make 200 ad impressions a day. That's a lot more than many authors on Tapas can get (I usually get 50-100 when I don't have a story featured in the homepage). At this rate, it would take about 7 years to gather the minimum $25.
I can make $25 in a single day working freelance.
Thankfully, I do these stories for fun, not profit, but there are artists out there who depend on their stories for a living. I can afford to keep my stories non-profit, they can't. So if you read something you enjoy here or elsewhere for free, please do try and support those authors with some amount. Any amount will help. Because even a penny each reader is a lot more than what they're getting from ads.
