This is my illustration for a gorgeous fairy-tale collab I posted on my main webcomic “Play”. Please check it out if you want to discover some awesome new LGBTQ+ webcomics!
As soon as I decided to join this collab, I knew I wanted to choose a traditional Russian fairy tale, because of their rich and fascinating folklore. I was tempted by “Masha and the Bear” because I wanted to dress up Michele as a bear. But then I also wanted to turn Ivan into Baba Yaga, so in the end I chose “Vasilisa the Beautiful”, which has one of her most iconic appearances.
In case you don’t know the story, it’s basically a Russian version of Cinderella, but with a wish-granting doll and waaaay more gore (yesss!)
For this illustration, I gender-swapped Baba Yaga and Vasilisa in an iconic scene where the witch gives the protagonist a skull lantern. I took inspiration from Ivan Bilibin and his stunning illustrations (ghost of Bilibin, please forgive my humble attempt 🙏)
