My opinion here: I didnt understand until I looked for the meaning of bedridden. Bedridden means that a person is confined to bed due to sickness or old age. The man looked at the cabinet signifying that it is near his death. The coat is then worn by the old man because he can feel the chill from his dying body. The girl quickly understood that he is cold and made him wear it. Then when the old man stood on the bed and got out of the room it was the best thing that happened to him even though it would result to his death. So before he died, he gave the coat to his daughter as a means of remembrance to him and as a thanks for giving him the chance to get out of the bed.
