He clambered down into the dark pits of the cavern, looking, searching for any tunnels that he may be interested in exploring. There had been a great article in his favorite magazine saying that this cavern had some of the best tunnels in the country to explore and he wanted to see them for himself. He had finally reached the bottom of the pit, he unclipped his safety harness and tied another rope onto the steel railing that was fixated next to the monolithic rock wall.
As he gazed at the railing he noticed a crisscross pattern drawn into the dust. He thought it strange as there was supposedly no one else in the caves today. It was then he heard it, a young woman’s voice repeatedly crying out “I’m sorry!”
He inspects the dark subterranean openings trying to work out where the voice had come from, suddenly a figure emerged from the dark shadows.
Her short raven hair bobbed with her every step, her dark eyes wide with sorrow and fear. She ran towards him and reached out her fingers and as he went to grab her hand the woman disappeared like a wisp of smoke. Again, he heard her voice cry out “I’m Sorry!” Again she emerged from the darkness with stretched out fingers only to dissipate once more into smoke.
Again and again she cried out for forgiveness as she emerged from the deep dark tunnels again and again. Again and again he stretched out his hand to grab her but he could never reach her. Again and again the scene would repeat itself tirelessly for hours until he finally gave up. It was the time of his surrender that she finally reached him although she did not stop nor did she disappear. She continued right through him as if were not there at all. As soon as she had gone past he turned.
When he turned he realized he was no longer in the cavern but at the edge of the cliff like opening of the cave. It was then he heard her distraught crying “I’m sorry!” He turned to look at her and was surprised by the sight of seeing men chasing her with distinct criss-cross patterns tattooed on their arms. It was then she lunged herself at him. Caught off guard he stepped back only to find no ground and fell into the deep hole. As he fell he heard her cry “I’m Sorry!” and he saw the tears in her eyes as they fell down the deep crevice together. In his final moments he remembered seeing her face in the magazine with the headline ‘Girl Commits Suicide at Countries Best Cavern’.
