My interpretation: She/He was sad over another person's lack of any interest in anyone so therefore she/he herself/himself, become like a mountain toward that one person. She/He become numb to the person's actions and their life/the association to that person had no meaning to them whatsoever since the ''mountain-person'' considered it something brief/temporary.
