And who are these guys? Is Jenny still dreaming? Is she having another episode? Or have her deliriums become real?
I've said this before, but this project has challenged my skills as an artist in a number of ways. The current challenge? Drawing a variety of male bodies. As my style is heavily anime/manga influenced, I used to draw pretty much all male characters skinny, lithe and androgynous, as is typical of a lot of anime and manga, particularly shoujo.
But as I've gotten older, and more diverse in my art, my interests have changed. I have more of an appreciation for a variety of bodies in men, as well as women. I find that I like drawing flabby arms, pouched bellies, scars, blemishes, crooked noses, and stocky feet. However all of these things do require further study. Maybe some artists feel differently, but I think drawing imperfect bodies is far more interesting, but also more challenging, than perfect ones. I feel as though this comic is giving me a chance to push the limits of my skills, and improve in a way that my previous projects have not.
I'm sure I'll make some mistakes along the way, but I'm excited to watch the progression of my work, and see what I'm really capable of creating. In the meantime I'm thinking about trying a few live figure drawing classes to improve my skills
Variety is always a plus. People in real life aren't all similar, so why should story characters be, either. Even more so when it's based on fantasy. Besides, it's a lot more merciful for readers when they don't need to wonder, while reading a page, "Is this John or Ben?" and after going two pages backwards "Oh no it's Matt!" So you're doing good job!
I myself enjoy different people too, in both appearance and personality. It's easier to write the story too, when they're all their own personalities and behave in totally different ways. Also as a complete bonus, I've had great fun measuring different heights of my characters and drawing the marks on my wall. Sometimes I stand there in front of the wall and stare at the lines and go "You're so tall!" or "You're so short!" and it's fun to imagine what they would comment back.
A tawdry monster romance in a high fantasy setting.
Jenny/Ghorza, a geeky 29-year-old who dreams of adventures beyond her humdrum life, is transported to a fantasy world like the ones she's spent her whole life dreaming about. There she is captured by mercenaries, but is soon "rescued" by Vargan, the leader and orc king of a raiding band of orcs. Vargan, however, gives her a choice: she can either be released and left to wander the forest of a foreign land alone, or be given shelter and protection in exchange for one thing... she must surrender her freedom as his "human pet."
