What't going on?

That stormy evening of january 2017, the power was already out in the neighborhood but I kept seeing those flashes around the sky. At first I thought it was thunder and lightning. Very unusual in winter, but I had already seen one in march.
When I got home, I plugged my cell phone in, in case the power came back on. In a real cartoon fashion, the power went back on for about thirty seconds, then a loud flash coming from the wires outside my window confirmed it: those flashes were the power grid collapsing around us.

Le soir de cette tempête-la, il y'avait des lueurs dans le ciel, presque comme lors d'un orage...mais en janvier?
Quand je suis rentrée à la maison, il n'y avait pas d'électricité. J'ai branché mon smartphone, au cas. L'électricité est revenu pendant un gros trente secondes, un gros flash venant des fils électrique près de ma fenêtre et plus rien.
C'était confirmé: ces lueurs c'étaient le réseau électrique en train de flancher autour.
