“What the hell?” Calvin is the first to speak up. I snap out of my stupor, frantically scrambling towards the wall of suits.
“Are we able to set timers on our suits?” I wonder out loud. As if hearing me, a hologram pops up from my glove, with a timer countdown of 30 minutes.
“Cool! Actually, set that to 29 minutes.” The timer on my wrist flickers and changes itself to 29 minutes. Everybody else around me does the same. The holograph flickers again and disappears, settling as numbers on my left glove, like a watch.
“Jackie, put on your suit. Everyone, grab a bag.” Liam snatches the blue bag and unzips it, rummaging through the contents.
“A week worths of food and water… basic first aid… some electronic devices… though I doubt we will need that with the suits that we have… what’s this?” He takes out a small, blue, metallic square, and examines it. Calvin was doing the same to his bag, and he pulls out an exact same square, except his was black. Assuming there would be one in my bag as well, except purple, I flip through the book, slinging my bag over my shoulders.
“Squarichles?” I mutter.
Liam chuckles. Ignoring him, I skim through the section on the squares.
“This is actually a device that can transform into vehicles! Go figure.”I rummage through the bag as I search for the little purple square.
“If they wanted us to have vehicles, why don’t they just build it into the suits?” Jacqueline ponders, slipping on her arm guard. Calvin examines the squares.
“Well, then the suits would be too weighed down with this stuff. Besides, theres only so much batteries could power.” Liam goes into professor mode again, his arms crossed.
“Less talking, more moving dude! The base is going to self destruct? Um?!” I stuff the book into my bag, taking out my squarichle.
“What are the options?” Jackie questions, having finally put on her suit and activated it. Her helmet visor suddenly slips down, and she holds out her hand, a holograph appearing from her glove. The holograph was an enlarged version of the squarichle, which then split into four different parts. There was a mini-jet, a motorcycle, a jet-ski, and a skateboard looking thing.
“What’s the skateboard?” Liam wondered.
“Yeah, let’s worry about that later. The timer says 23 minutes y’know?” Calvin snaps. Liam nods solemnly.
“Wait, so what are we going to do about the white suit?” Jacqueline stops us.
“Our safest bet is to split the parts up. The manual told us not to let it fall into the wrong hands right? I’m assuming that the suits won’t be at full power if all the parts are separated.” Calvin explains. When he notices everybody staring at him, he shrugs.
“Gamer logic.” (Cue face palms.) Shrugging, I stuff the arm guards and the boots into my bag. I see Liam take the helmet and pants, Jacqueline take the full body suit, which left Calvin with the metal chest plate.
“Why do I have to take the heaviest thing?” Calvin grumbles.
“Because you’re always talking about how strong you are.” I responded.
“Alright, let’s go!” Liam cheers.
“If you haven’t noticed though, the door is locked. And it’s a heavy metal door.” Jacqueline points out.
“Whoops.” I was trying the handle, but the door didn’t budge one bit. Liam comes over and raps on the surface, listening.
“It’s no use. This door is more than a meter thick.” He says. I face palm.
“How the hell are we going to get out of here then?” Jacqueline questions. All this time, Calvin had been silent. I look at him, slightly worried. Liam and Jaqueline were still arguing about the best way to get through the door.
“No, no, I’m telling you, there has got to be some kind of device or electronic connected to the door! There’s no way it can be opened by a person.” Liam insisted.
“What about those emergency doors? You know, the ones where you twist a thing, and it opens?” Jacqueline fires back.
“Um… guys?” I mutter as Calvin looks towards the door, his eyes strangely blank.
“Guys!” I squeak in alarm. They pay no attention to me. My eyes widen as I watch Calvin raise his hand towards the door.
“WATCH OUT!” I tackle Liam and Jacqueline, sending the three of us sprawling to the side of the door right before it was blown off it’s hinges. I cough, untangling myself from Liam’s gangly limbs. Jacqueline struggles to get up, eyes squinted, and she looks as surprised as I am as the dust clears.
Calvin was standing there, his hand still outstretched at the door. Liam staggers towards the door, eyes wide with disbelief. Trembling, he points to the empty doorway, then to the broken door, then to Calvin.
“H-how the hell did you just do that?” He croaks out. Calvin looks just as shocked as the rest of us. Liam then points to me.
“H-how did you know he was going to do that?” I wave my hands defensively.
“I-I didn’t! I didn’t know! I just… thought that something was going to happen… Like, a gut feeling… you know?” I stutter. Liam looks at me doubtfully.
“Hold on.” I rummage in my bag, pulling out the manual again, flipping through it feverishly.
“Didn’t the manual say something about the suits having powers?” Jacqueline mutters as she drops to my side.
“WHAT? How can you two be so calm about this?! Calvin just blew the door down! Like, a meter thick metal door! He just blew it off? Hello?!” Liam yells. I hold up the book triumphantly.
“Found it! The black suit gives the user telekinesis. The ability to control objects with the mind. And it says here that…” I flip through the pages some more.
“The ability and the limits are connected directly to the user’s emotional state. Therefore, if Calvin has a very strong feeling, such as intense happiness or anger, then he is able to exercise more control and lift more weight with the telekinesis. But the drawback is that if he goes over the weight limit, which is…” Jacqueline finds it before I do.
“5 tons.”
“If he lifts stuff over 5 tons then he usually will experience headaches, nausea, and if he lifts even more than that then he may start physically damaging his body…” I trail off as this sets in slowly. Calvin finally looks up from his hands.
“You mean I have telekinesis now? Like, for real?” My eyes narrow, and crossing the distance between us with three broad steps, (an impressive feat, considering my small stature) I smack him on the shoulder.
“We’re in this situation and you still think this is a dream? Can we be realistic?” I snap. He blinks, and shakes his head, as if clearing his thoughts.
“Right. This is real. I actually have telekinesis.” He pauses.
“THIS IS SO COOL.” He exclaims, lifting up the broken metal door and floating it around the cramped room. Jacqueline snaps up and prances across the room in two steps (much to my envy) and smacks the back of his head. She gestures to her timer on her wrist.
“16 minutes! Let’s go! Calvin can go first because he has telekinesis.” She says. Liam nods and gets up as well, as I hurry to tuck the manual away into my bag. Calvin gulps and looks out the ominously dark hallway.
“If any person comes you can just blast him out of the way… right?” Liam peeks out from behind him. Calvin turns around to half heartedly glare at Liam.
“It’s quite a peculiar sensation to get used to if you ask me. It’s like the object is suddenly a part of you and you know exactly how to control it, but you feel pressure on yourself as well, as well as pressure on the object. And you’re not sure how much force you need to tear it apart…” He trails off as he sees the confused faces of the three of us. He sighs.
“I guess you wouldn’t get it if you didn’t experience it yourselves.” I peek out from behind him, and checking that there is nobody there, I shove Calvin out into the hallway. Immediately, lights flare on either side of him, continuing on through the seemingly endless hallway. He stumbles and stops, turning back to glare at me. I glare back.
As Calvin leads the way and Jacqueline and Liam follow him, I pause as I spot a plaque card labeling our room. On it, is a picture of a pale woman with light blond hair, maybe in her 40s, with kind, blue grey eyes. Her cheeks were gaunt, and her mouth was turned up in a tired smile.
“Dr. Amelia White. In charge of…” I frown as I read what it said next.
“Experiment 23…?”
