We had ended up testing if ‘it’ was indeed the ‘tracker’ and left it at the mansion, in the attic.
The police officers went through the place again, thought having seen Cairi by the window, we remained hiding in the stuffy passage ‘entrance’ while Cairi somehow evade the police, having hid behind some sheets covering old ‘leftover’ furniture in one of the rooms.
We listened as the man radio in having found Cairi’s monitor-bracelet and hearing ‘Jason’ this time respond.
“I’ll go check on her right now.” He said clearly mad as a hell-hound that lost its prey.
As soon as we heard the police car sped away we called after her, but she was already ‘out-the-house’. Rushing after her, we had no idea where she was going and lost track of her! Surprise-surpise, she was fast on her feet.
My phone rang and when I didn’t pick-up Marshall’s was next, then Derik’s and soon even Richards… Richard picked up and it was Jason on the line.
“I know you guys were with her, where is she? She’s not at her dorm-room, nor at home or at our Grandfather’s place!”
“We lost her! She ran off and we lost her!”
“Then maybe ‘you’ can tell me if she knows…” He queried, we shook our heads, not to tell Jason, and for once Richard, smiling, obliged.
“I’m not sure what you mean by that? Knows what?”
“If you don’t know then she doesn’t.” We could hear him sigh in relief, but something hinted to us that he wasn’t done panicking.
“Which way did she run?”
“We lost her around Copper street. She was clearly running towards somewhere, but there’s nothing, Copper Street’s a dead end.
“No. No it’s not!” Jason hung up, leaving us clueless as to what he meant, cause we were there, standing at the end of Copper Street.
The next day, Cairi wasn’t anywhere to be found and neither was Jason, curiosity had the better of me and skipping out on classes I headed to the police station to find out if Jason found Cairi. According to them he did. I asked them about Jason and how long he had been part of the force, only out of curiosity and found out that he was a genius rookie that had quit just over a year ago… Which makes sense; she did say he was attending collage to keep tabs on her, but they never let any other information slip on where the two of them could have been.
A week went by and Jason was back on campus, but still no Cairi. Jason seemed somewhat ‘out’ of sorts’ like he often did, and having met Cairi, I finally knew why, she gave if hell and took up all his time chasing after her!
“Though I hate your friend for the very same reason I ‘trust’ him, I expect you to tell me next time anything regarding Cairi…” The way he said it was like he ‘wanted’ to hate me too, and ‘trust’ me in return. As if there was some greater reason to why he was so concerned over her…
Only when it would be too late would I regret it. Regret having her ‘trust’ instead of his. Having her ‘love’ instead of his ‘hate’…
