My eyesight has always been bad, ever since I was a kid. My mom told me that I had to get glasses in third grade, and I remember being so upset. I threw such a fit that day. I got over it pretty quick though, once I found out that I got to pick out my frames. After that, I just... got used to wearing them, and that was the end of it.
I grew accustomed to wearing my glasses, but even as and adult, I can't get used to taking them off. Every time I take them off, I feel... uneasy. As if my sight will never return, even if I put the glasses back on, or the blurry, swirling shapes I see in the darkness before I fall asleep are more than just figments of my imagination. I'm never sure.
One night in particular, I was having trouble sleeping. As I lay there, staring at the ceiling, the shadows seemed to grow and dance on the walls, swarming in the corners and gathering around my bed. I couldn't tell what was It made me uncomfortable, but eventually, I managed to fall asleep.
I woke up early in the morning. I had slept badly the whole night, so it wasn't the first time. I kept seeing things as I drifted in and out of sleep. I swung my feet out of bed onto the cold floor. I put my glasses on and was about to go to the kitchen, but something caught my eye. Now that I could see, I noticed my bedroom door was open. I always closed my door before I went to sleep.
I checked the rest of the house after that, and found that the back door was unlocked. I filed a report, but there wasn't much to investigate. Nothing seemed to be stolen, but I just couldn't shake the suspicion.
Were my eyes playing tricks on me?
What if the shadows weren't just shadows?
What if someone was in my house?
What if someone was in my room?
