Her father sighed, "you see, Cecilia, there is some...commotion... happening in one of the bigger cities on Earth. We have been planning on sending someone to investigate but could not figure out who to send."
"Commotion being that there is an increase of cases of the sins. As you probably know, it is not unusual to have an increase amount of sins in larger cities, however, the cases have increased by 35% in the last month," James Purpler said.
Cecilia mouthed the word "wow".
An increase of 5% was enough to get the attention of the leaders. One so large in a city so big was definitely a "commotion".
"And you want to send me?" she asked.
"They want to send you. The Red, Orange and Yellow section nominated your older brother," he said, "he has more experience."
"But she shows promise," James challenged.
"You just want her to go because she is in your section," her father spat.
"And she is your daughter," Leader Elyse said, "we have all seen what she is capable of."
"That is the thing, we have not. How she does on the test does not mean she will do just as good in the real situation," Leader John said.
Cecilia wanted to say that her brother had not much experience either. Since he graduated three years ago, he was connected to their father's hip. Not once had he gone to Earth on his own mission.
"How about this. You send me to that city to be on a regular assignment. I become a Friend to a child and at the same time, observe what I see," Cecilia chimed in.
The leaders were silent for a moment.
"That seems fair," James said, "John, you can do the same with Junior."
Her father did a good job hiding his anger. She could tell that he was upset that she was the one who came up with a compromise from years of observing him. It was the reason she was able to keep her calm mask herself.
"Fair, huh," her father was leaning back in his seat. He slowly nodded his head, "okay, fine. You and John will be assigned children and will leave tomorrow morning."
The same nerves in her stomach returned. It was all becoming all too real.
"Sounds good," Cecilia smiled calmly.
"This meeting is now over," her father stood up and left the room.
Slowly, the other leaders started to leave the room until it was just James and Lila left with her.
"That went better than expected," James nervously chuckled.
"What do you mean?" Cecilia asked.
"I don't know if you've noticed, but your father could be a real hot head," James said nudging her with his elbow.
Cecilia smiled but inched away from him. She could not understand how easily he warmed up to her.
He was just being nice because he wanted something from her. That was what she believed.
She looked at Lila.
"We need to talk to you. Privately," Lila said.
"Walk with us?" James offered his arm but Cecilia ignored it and started walking on her own, following Lila.
They walked out of the room and down the hallway.
"You're an official member of the purple community now," James said.
"I thought I have been since birth," Cecilia said.
"Well, you haven't been influential till now," Lila corrected his statement.
"Yes, that is what I meant. You could really make a difference with this mission," James said.
Make a difference? This mission did not seem all that complicated.
"You have not told me all the information yet," Cecilia pointed out.
James looked from Cecilia to Lila and back to Cecilia, "You were right, Lila. She is a smart cookie."
He said this with a smile. A smile that seemed genuine.
They walked out of the building and was greeted by the bright light from the sun.
"You'll know everything once we get to our location," he said.
There were seven tall buildings in the city that towered over the rest. Each glass building belonged to a different section, each tinted with their color. Each building looked the same, none better than the other.
In the middle of the city was the tallest building of all. This one tinted white. That building was where all the sections worked together to monitor Earth.
The three of them were walking towards the purple building.
On the top of her vision she saw Victors name in black letters. She blinked and a message was revealed.
From Victor.
So did you kick that lion's butt ;)
She sighed. In order to put the ";)", he had to say in his head "semi colon end parentheses". All that trouble to put a winking face.
It seemed that the only course he paid attention to was "Earth Communication".
She started thinking her reply.
Send to Victor.
I can't talk right now. I'm with the leader of purple and Lila. Just got out of a meeting with all the leaders. Fill you in later.
She watched as the letters were typed.
"Send," she thought.
Moments later she saw the new message.
From Victor.
That sounds serious. I'll see you later. Don't miss me too much <3 <3 kissing face kissing face
She could not help but chuckle.
"What is it?" Lila asked.
"Oh nothing, nothing," she said trying to hide the laughter on her face.
Lila gave her a knowing look.
The communication was done by contacts that do not need to be taken off. The contacts can be used for night vision, thermal vision, and so on. The contacts were accompanied by ear pieces implanted in the cartilage that scanned the brain.
The technology of the Imaginary World was more advanced than that on Earth.
When they walked into the purple tower, James was greeted by the front receptionist. She gave him a white smile and her eyes were so focused on him, Cecilia could swear she did not blink. Only her upper body was showing from behind the white marble desk. She was wearing a white long sleeved shirt, it might have been a dress.
"Good day, Leader James, Elder Lila, and Cecilia Purple," the receptionist said in a smooth voice.
"Hello, Carmen," James smiled.
"Would you all care for water?" She asked.
James looked at Lila and then at her. She nodded her head.
"Just one, thank you," he told her.
"Yes, sir. Right away," she said.
"Follow me," James said and started walking to the glass elevator. What ever was not made of glass, was white.
The Imaginary society was, to the point of obsession, clean.
Black was reserved to the fighters of the Imaginary World, the Friends. When the Friends first arrived on Earth, they were simply called "Protectors" since they watched over the young. The humans were the ones that gave them the name of "Imaginary Friends". Thus, the name was changed.
The Friends uniform was primarily white but with each extermination of a sin earned the Friend a black line. If a Friend ever came face to face with a demon, and killed it, they earn a pure black uniform. A sign of honor.
"I'm on the top floor," he said as he pressed a button once they were inside the elevator.
James chuckled to himself. When he caught Cecilia looking at him, he said, "I was about to say 'You already knew that' since your father is a leader but I forgot that other colors are not allowed in the other towers."
"Oh," she simply said and nodded her head.
When she was younger, innocent to those kinds of rules, she tried going to the red tower to tell her father how good she did on a test.
She was greeted at the door by a red security guard.
"Are you lost, little girl," he said. Later on she realized that this man was actually a kind person considering he talked to her in a calm voice.
"I want to see my father," she said.
"Hmmm, you must be Leader John's daughter," he took a knee so he would be eye to eye with her.
"Yes, sir," she said in a small, whisper like, voice.
"What's your name?" He asked her. He looked like a scary man since he was big. He was muscular and towered over her. She remembered his bushy eyebrows and beard.
"Cecilia," she said with more confidence.
"What a pretty name," he smiled. One of his canine teeth poked out more than the other line of teeth around it.
"Listen, Cecilia, you are not allowed in this building. It is one of the harmony rules that we have. To keep the peace of our society, we must follow these rules," he said, "do you understand?"
"Yes," she looked down at the ground.
"Is there a message you want me to relay to your father?" He asked.
"I got a perfect score on my test," she said. She pulled a tablet out of her backpack, tapped on the screen, and showed the man the graded test.
"Wow look at you," he smiled as he looked at the screen, "What a smart girl."
She smiled proudly back, "thank you."
"What was the test about?" he asked.
"Japanese language," she said.
"What a tricky language and for you to ace it. You must be the smartest girl I know! I'll make sure and let your father know right away," the man said. He stood back up and walked her to the door. She waved goodbye and walked down the street.
Later that night, her father only told her to never go to the building again. He did not mention the grade. She was sure, however, that the guard told him.
"Cecilia?"
She looked up and saw James sitting behind his desk with Lila sitting to the right of her.
"Yes?" She asked.
"You seemed dazed there," James said, "everything okay?"
A knock came from the door.
"Come in, Carmen," he said.
Carmen walked into the room. Sure enough, she was wearing a white dress.
She placed the water on the desk in front of Cecilia, bowed her head, and walked back out the room.
"I would like the start the meeting by stating how fantastic you did in your final exams," James said.
Cecilia sipped on her cup of water.
"From what I watched, I feel confident that you will excel in this mission you are being assigned to. As you have noted, not all the information was given at the Academy. There have been rumors that a Friend was tinted, and is being used by a demon to leak intel about the Imaginary World. These are just rumors, of course, but apparently only the cool sections are taking it seriously. The warm sections see no threat. If it is true, it can be a serious problem. If it is not true, we would be at peace knowing it was not true," he said.
She looked at Lila and then at her hands. The cool sections included green, blue, indigo, and purple. Warm was red, orange, and yellow.
If there was a leak of intel, that could explain why there was a sudden increase of sins.
"The increase of sins were in locations with a shorter amount of Friends?" She asked James.
James leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms, "Yes."
"That adds to the evidence that this rumor might have a little truth," she said.
"Your official mission is to find out whether this rumor is true or not and to report to me," he said.
A knocking came from the door.
"Come in, Carmen," he said.
Carmen walked in with a file in her hands. She handed it to James, bowed her head, and walked out the room.
"This is your boy," He said.
The file was white with a printed name on the tab.
"Is that paper?" She asked.
He handed the file to her, "Yes. I printed it for you. I find it easier to learn information when you can physically hold it."
She felt the paper in her hands. Paper was not common. The Imaginary World ran on technology. Everything could be on a tablet.
"Do you have any questions for us?" He asked.
"Do I report to you in person?" She asked.
"In person. Once a week," he said, "Anything else?"
"I can't think of anything," she said.
"Well, if you do, I put my information on how you can contact me in that file," James said, "You will report to the Main Tower tomorrow at 0800 sharp. There you will get your uniform and weapons. Then you will be transported to Earth. Understood?"
"Yes, sir," she stood up.
"We believe in you," Lila smiled. The wrinkles on her face deepened but she still was still stunning.
Cecilia bowed her head and walked out of the room before they could see how much those words affected her.
Once she was out of the office, she leaned on the wall and touched her chest where her heart would be, and smiled.
