The annual magic games on campus to celebrate the upcoming Quiet Period aka school break. Students are divided between the "Southern" and "Western" teams - and the overall points are very close. The final event of the games is the Hammer Throw (literally).

A world-wide curse kills adult males and pregnant mothers. The curse can be made less lethal by a spell known as the "Top Filter". This spell is fuel intensive and not many magicians (Burners) can cast it. Those who can cast the spell are called "Filters".
Karen McWud is the most promising Fuel Burner in school. She is working to be a Filter, at least to help out her vulnerable friends.
